Thank you to Diorama Presepe for gifting me their materials for.use in this video.
Get access to my new tutorial ebook series! / higheyeworkshop .
(The ebook tutorials are now Patreon rewards, along with early access to KZfaq videos. Any information given in the video about previous Patreon rewards may be out of date.)
Please note: my website is now closed and kits are no longer available.
I've always wanted to make a big model tree.
Not just a big tree, but a GIANT model tree.
But how do you go about making a giant tree while keeping it looking incredibly realistic?
Answer:
With stabilised natural materials from Diorama Presepe and A LOT of fiddly work.
If you can get through the many hours of struggle, with bits of carefully placed foliage dropping off, then at the end of it you'll have yourself an amazing model tree - a hyper realistic 1/24 model tree, to be precise - that will wow your friends and family.
This is next-level diorama building and you can use the techniques to make smaller model trees, too.
This is made from natural materials, but the same techniques can be used for wargaming trees and model railway scenery. I have plans to make a giant wire tree tutorial, too!
This awesome detailed diorama tutorial will teach you how to apply leaves, texture and paint bark and even make your own superglue activator.
I created this ultra realistic model tree over about 15 hours using the following materials:
Thyme twigs
Teloxis Bloom
Geek Gaming Modelling Compound
Black wash (homemade)
PlastiKote Hydro Primer
PlastiKote Clear Sealer
WWS Basing Glue
Superglue Gel
Superglue Activator (bought and homemade)
Diorama Presepe static grass and ground texture.
Diorama Presepe supercharged static grass applicator / flock box.
Rustoleum brown spray paint.
Vallejo Moss and Lichen paint.
Vallejo Verdigris paint.
In this video I use several products that were gifted to me to use in my videos:
Sculpting tool by Hot Wire Foam Factory: hotwirefoamfactory.com
Static grass applicator, static grass and tree materials by Diorama Presepe (www.dioramapresepe.com, / dioramapresepe.com_off... , kzfaq.info/love/eSX....
Hydro Primer from PlastiKote: plasti-kote.co.uk
Basing glue from War World Scenics: www.WWScenics.com.
Many of the materials and tools I use come with safety instructions. Please always read and follow these rather than simply copy what you see me or other people doing.

Just amazing. You create the most realistic scenery of anyone. Since you’re the tree master now.. I have a challenge. I believe you would enjoy. The tree is endangered and nearing extinction so you’d also be spreading awareness. Just think of the opportunities! It’s a dramatic tree and unique. You should make a WEEPING WILLOW tree. I can see this being both challenging and rewarding.

Hello Merrick, there has been a giant ancient Oak tree in Santa Barbara, California for over at least a hundred years.. My mother loved it so much she reproduced it using oil paints. That painting is one of my prized possessions. This stunningly realistic Oak you created reminds me of it. Beautiful work, well done. Thanks for sharing. See ya next time.
