I was under the impression they removed weird mushrooms because normal mushrooms had a 1 in 100 chance of being a weird mushroom and it allowed creators to create levels that were only possible with the right RNG. I might be totally wrong, but that was the impression I was under. They could, however, have just removed the RNG and left the costume in 😥

Ya know what? Ryu does deserve a trophy for all the troll levels he's beaten and hot garbage he's cleared in the name of entertaining the masses.

My theory why Lanky Mario did not return in Mario Maker 2 (aside from some level editor eastereggs) is, because Nintendo introduced multiplayer and 3 more playable characters, they didn't feel like making a Lanky sprite to the other three playable characters, after making the other characters' Powerup'd sprites. I don't understand why the " mystery mushroom" costumes mechanic did not return though. They could do to the other characters for alts what they did for the new Master Sword powerup'd sprites for alternate characters: Just give them a different color palette than Mario's. While Mario Maker 2 brought some improvements and more course parts than Mario Maker 1 had, they also axed the charms that made the original so special: The alternate costumes, the title screen bonus functions, the rare alternate falling into pit death sounds, and other great stuff too.

I was figuring out that the reason they might’ve token him out of Mario Maker 2, was because of the fact that they needed to animate the other three characters with the power-up, as well. Since, in Mario Maker, they only had Mario to worry about. Plus, Miyamoto even said that it was a bug in the first Mario Maker game.

I think they got rid of lanky mario because they were planning to have a lot more Mario 2 features, and Luigi in that game acts like Lanky Mario in this. But then for some reason it never really got past just the basic mario 2 mechanics.

One possible reason for removal of Lanky Mario: in Mario Maker 1, Lanky Mario can be acquired randomly from a regular SMB1 mushroom block. There were issues with people being able to make unfinishable levels by abusing this gimmick-feature. They could've just let out the random Lankies though.

Notice how Ryu is not afraid to lose a life checking yolo jumps or hidden paths. Before MM2 those 100 lives were cherished. Since MM2 only gave 30 lives you gotta be careful. Now with 100, burning a few lives for nonsense is a-okay.
