As time goes on, people get better and better at the forehand roll. It's become so widespread now that regular third shot drops that bounce high in the kitchen are more difficult to pull off. So instead, why not try a shot that avoids all of this? In this video, I show you how!

****I notice that it is pretty natural to impart backspin on my backhand 3rd shot drops...but I don't think a backspin on a 3rd shot drop is wise because it causes the ball to float higher over the net making it potentially easier for my opponents to volley back. Do you also typically try to put some top spin on 3rd shots you hit with your backhand as well? Thanks

Great video! I can really see how the arch of that shot is at its peak on your side of the net, so that it’s dropping significantly when it’s at the net. It’s dropping sharply on the other side of the net forcing a low to high shot from your opponents - perfect for you to tee up on.

on that example shot, I would have rushed the line immediately and looked to jump the corner erne, because theres not much else they can do with that shot besides exactly what she does which is go straight ahead. If shes able to angle the 4th shot your partner gets it, but if not you kill it on the 5th with the erne jump. Not everyone has the athletic ability to do it, but thats one of the go to set plays I enjoy running for a 5 shot score.

The good news (for me), this is precisely the same stroke I use when doing ground strokes. Including brushing up on the ball, 45° paddle pointing down, follow through to the left ear, etc. Looking at your video, it seems to be the same for you as well. That is, your topspin ground stroke seems the same motion as your "3rd-shot Dive.” True? What do you do different for this 3rd? Is it the same acceleration and brushing of the ball for top, but simply a softer stroke? Less pace, so that it falls into the kitchen rather than deep into the court. I ask because I’m often getting it too deep, and needing to know how to correct this. More topspin? Softer? Less pace?
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 3 жыл бұрын
The trick to this shot is to let the brush up motion take it up in the air. This will not only give it topspin, but it will give it the upward trajectory to then let it dive down. What you don't want is too much forward pace. Think upward pace. Does that help? Personally, for my 3rd shot drive, I hit it more forward or flat.
@jamesgartner1911
@jamesgartner1911 3 жыл бұрын
@@PickleballKitchen Let's see if I have this right. You're suggesting an "upward motion taking it up in the air" ... meaning clearing the net perhaps higher than what I was attempting, and thus preventing the ball from going too deep into the court. First question: Do I have this right? If so, my confusion came from watching your video -- as it seems you were only clearing the net by about 6 inches or so. Look at your video starting around 1:56 . It looks like you are just barely clearing the net -- which is what I was striving for, and thus often (not always) hitting it too deep into the court, even with extreme topspin. Perhaps I'm not getting enough arc on the shot (although again, it doesn't look like you're getting much arc at all).

Whoops sorry, I read your comment incorrectly. For this shot, I use an eastern or even a semi-western grip, but 99% of the time it's eastern. I typically don't use those words though. I just say to people, "rotate your grip to the right until it feels OK." Just experiment though.
@mlee9049
@mlee9049 3 жыл бұрын
@@PickleballKitchen Thank you so much. I call the semi western the frying pan grip ( to help me remember). Is the western grip the one that is turned about 45 degrees?
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 3 жыл бұрын
As I was reading your comment, I made a "shaking the frying pan" motion and just laughed. That's great! The full blown western grip is that crazy one where your hand is completely underneath the handle. I haven't seen very many people use it. I would stay away from it for now. Continental and eastern grips are the best for PB.

Pretty much, but in reality, shots like this that are done closer up are basically just dinks. That's the great thing about this shot. If you can get really good at it, the topspin dink isn't too far off!

Haven’t been able to get Pickleball Kitchen to respond, so I’ll open this to anyone. Confirm my thinking: Because of the acceleration and brushing motion (for topspin), many of my 3rds are going as much as a foot, sometimes more, past the kitchen line. To get my 3rds into the kitchen, or even landing at the kitchen line, is this just a matter of finesse, more top, and perhaps hitting just a tad softer? Thoughts?

Barret, an observation: you talk early in this vid about "rolling over the ball, rolling over your forearm..." and then show your paddle face turning in a closed direction. BUT, watching your strokes later in the vid, using my pause button, it's totally clear that your paddle face is a bit open and NEVER closed at all on most shots. Pause at 9:05 and you can see a good example of this---the paddle face is still sl OPEN even after the ball has been contacted and is 3-4 feet away from your paddle. And at the end of your stroke it is still open. So, I think this term 'roll over' is very misleading and if you do it, the ball goes to the left and into the NET most times. Jordan and other instructors make the same mistake in my view---your thoughts please--thanks Tom Fauntleroy
@PickleballKitchen
@PickleballKitchen 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Tom, thanks for stopping by and thanks for the comment. I'm not sure if you saw the clarification part of the video, but I put in a little bit that explains this. You begin to close things over, but not entirely. It's the start of that motion that matters as it transforms into the follow-through. Admittedly, the example you mention isn't the best.

You've formed your opinion based on one example? At any rate, the goal of the third shot is not to be "unreturnable." If it results in a just few more pop-up fourth shots that you or your partner can pick off, then that alone makes it a good option.
