Had that feeling when started racing at Mosport! One part your turning left and your head is wants to go the other way! That was when new and in rental karts in 09. Doing that in a Rotax would not be good on my old body! When eventually moved to Briggs the track changed and repaved. That one segment of track never had that same feel again! Inbetween that time got to do double duty as a corner worker! Had no issue being poorly paid to watch kart racing all day! There's nothing boring about being at turn 1 on lap 1! If think about it hard enough can describe every red flag we had.

As someone who used to routinely race in Rotax Senior, I have to say Jimmy did a good job getting acclimated. Even at the start of a new season, the initial feeling of driving it hard is always something that catches you a little off guard! edit: One thing I could say about Jimmy's driving is his braking technique. He seems to be trail braking a bit into the corners in order to carry some initial speed as he would in a racing car, however with karts you typically want to be more aggressive with the brake and get all of it done asap before the corner; closer to how you'd brake in a modern F1 car. Aside from that, very smooth and awesome to see the fast boii going at it :D
@truantray

I noticed that, he drove it like a car. Karters square the corners.
@NerfMan1171
@NerfMan1171 4 жыл бұрын
@@truantray yup exactly! Brake as fast and hard as possible, then roll it all into the corner. Allows you to carry more speed and apply the throttle even faster, since the weight pushes to the front and allows the front end to "bite" giving more grip to steer in

Had a solid 15 years of karting. A few weeks ago was my 1st seat time in 18 months! Surprised only sore for 2 days. Ran Briggs Masters and was so nice to run around weight free! My poor seat looks like Swiss Cheese! Not many places you can hide 65 lbs!! Had 1 try in a Rotax and it was fun. My time as a corner worker was not boring. Medical issue meant a forced retirement. Kept me out of trouble on Saturday nights with a 4 am Sunday wake up! 😁
@NerfMan1171
@NerfMan1171 4 жыл бұрын
@VPV In these kinds of karts you typically want to brake hard and release the brakes before turning in, however you want to be braking as late as possible and for the shortest amount of time possible. This means applying a lot of pressure onto the brake for a short time. Depending on the engine on the kart, you either roll the gas immediately or go back onto it completely. With the Rotax, rolling the gas is more efficient on exit. However with a X30 or Rok engine, typically going straight back on will be better. The key is to always be on one of the two pedals during the whole lap, avoid lifting and coasting (which means using neither pedal), and conserving momentum so that your kart doesn't bog down on power when you go back on throttle (keeping the revs up).

0:21 You'll struggle to find the Clay Pigeon circuit in Wiltshire - Mainly because it's in Dorset, 10 miles north west of Dorchester, by the A37 (my way to work). I've had a lot of fun in a few karts up there (Fastest was an old 100cc National that a friend modified with a 125cc 5 speed) - watching that video I'm sure the straights were shorter and the bends tighter but I recognised that circuit instantly - not driven it in 25 years. Last time I drove a kart I crashed into a tyre wall quite slow and cracked 2 ribs. Never was any good. Trip down memory lane.

Rotax is a homologated series with sealed engines. You can not even unseal an engine without certification on karts that will be used for competition. The fine for driver and the certified mechanic are no joke if it's out of spec. It is very possible to make them faster with some fiddling if you know what you're doing. For instance he said the kart is about 30hp. They can make 33hp, but most run them at 28-29 so they have better torque and also because it gives you more time before carbon buildup puts it out of spec. The tolerances on Rotax karts are tighter than F1 by far. Karts also have the most advanced tires in all of motorsports. A single set of spec dry slicks will set you back $300 and they are only really good for 5 heat cycles. After that they are sold to club racers or used for specific training sessions / practice.

The next thing you need to get is a foam karting neck brace. I'm honestly surprised it isn't mandatory safety equipment, but it helps tremendously in supporting your head/helmet and neck muscles, especially if you log tons of laps in a single day. After several years of driving karts similar to this Rotax, the only time I've had my neck muscles go is after 30-45 minutes of driving a ludicrous oval track kart turning 15sec laps. Not to mention the protection from whiplash in the event of an accident

These karts are 2 cycle (or 2 stroke) as opposed to a 4 cycle 400cc predator motor, so overall they make more power in a smaller space with much less weight. It's entirely possible these 2 cycles are much faster than any equivalent powered 4 cycle you slap on a rusty old yard kart with Hoosier dirt tyres.

I used to race these myself, very satisfying when you've got them dialled in. Clay is a brilliant circuit, it was the first circuit I ever drove! Next step is to try out an aero gearbox kart Jimmy. They are monsters in a race situation, but with all your sim experience I have no doubt you'd cope with it. Oh yeah, you also need you're own helmet design now! Time for some neck strength training. Find somewhere you can nail or screw a inner tyre tube to a post or wall. Try and find a tube the right size so that it fits around you head and you can sit with your shoulder close to the wall/post. This will allow you to adjust how far you stretch the tube (to make it harder as your neck strengthens). Then start slowly by doing 5-6 reps left, right, front and back a few times a day and gradually increase it. Cheap and easy to do. Just when you screw it to the wall/post use large washers and bend the ends outward where tube will stretch around so that you don't cut the tube.

Awesome, great to have had club100 to prepare you for this. The savage is incredible, I've had 15 mins in a old 100cc mental kart that revved to 5 million RPM. My arms were dead after about 5 corners! That feeling of oversteer just turning the wheel slightly full throttle at 60+mph is insane. Its been 15 years since I did that though. I think in AMS with custom physics the karts can actually get pretty good and they still kill my arms. But not the neck. :P
