In 1994 Nirvana came to London, I was 17 and they were the only thing in my life that made sense and kept me going. They played at the Brixton Academy and I wanted to go more than anything in the world, but I couldn’t afford the ticket. My best mate’s Dad ran a pub in Clapham near by, we used to train in boxing at the time so before our sessions we would run around the area and time our selves. On my run I bumped in to three guys unloading a van in to a house. It was Kurt, Krist and Dave. I froze and couldn’t even speak. One of them said something along the lines of “hey young dude, go for it “ as in keep running. I regret not saying anything to this day.

@Milf Fucker Grunge was a sub-genre of alternative rock which is also a sub-genre of rock. Grunge music was known for heavy instrument distortion and the lyrics were usually driven by angst or political and delivered in an obscure manner. Also, to really understand the impact grunge made you have to understand the prior decade, the 80's! In my opinion, that whole decade sucked! Rock music was just about obsolete, except for a few hair metal bands, which I had a hard time taking seriously in their bright spandex, bleached, over-processed hair and makeup. We had political leaders we couldn't relate to because they couldn't relate to us. We were the first generation of latchkey kids. We were a generation seeking something else! And then in the early 90's we all heard this new sound coming out of Seattle! I can't speak for everyone, but, my friends and I were instantly hooked! We weren't like the stereotypical 80's girls. We didn't hang out at the mall! I could have cared less about the new Duran Duran song. We were still listening to Zeppelin and Floyd! We felt like misfits at times! But, when grunge hit the airwaves, we felt we finally had a place!

Actually, while Nirvana did indeed bring Grunge Rock into the mainstream in 1991, hitting #1 on the Billboard charts, they did not create Grunge Rock. There were quite a number of bands from a few years prior that were already doing Grunge Rock such as 'The Pixies' with their song "Where Is My Mind" enjoying some mainstream success in 1987 (but nowhere as close to the success that Nirvana had 4 years later in 1991). 1980s Grunge Rock groups like 'The Pixies' were years ahead of their time, coming out a decade too early...because that 1980s rock era was still dominated by Glam Rock and 'Hair' bands. Nirvana dropped their song and album at just the right time in the early 1990s, finally officially ending the 1980s Glam Rock era. Btw, Kurt Cobain of Nirvana even said that Nirvana's music was heavily influenced by 'The Pixies'. If you haven't already done so, check out the 1987 Grunge Rock offering from 'The Pixies'., with their song "Where Is My Mind". They were definitely ahead of their time.

But to me their best work was their unplugged concert for MTV. About a Girl, Lake of Fire, All Apologies, and Where did you Sleep Last Night are all iconic performances. They really showcase Kurt Cobain's very unique sound and authenticity.

Not exactly correct they were proud of the song they loved it they didn't think it was their best song on nevermind that title went to in bloom but teen spirit went stratospheric and they didn't want to known for just one song so it was more about people's reaction to it than the song itself .I guess they didn't want to be a one hit wonder group. Nirvana changed the face of the music industry OVERNIGHT with this song! It went stratospheric and defined a new genre - 'grunge'. I adored them and like everyone else was devastated when singer/songwriter/lead guitarist, Kurt Cobain took his own life in 1994 at the peak of their fame. You NEED to check out 'Where Did You Sleep Last Night' Unplugged - kzfaq.info/get/bejne/nqt9oJqY3ai9g5c.html - my favourite ever Nirvana performance.- haunting. Their whole MTV unplugged set was, and still is, legendary. Kurt died a few months later aged just 27yrs - 'The 27 Club'. Kurt was a gentle but troubled soul who hated fame……what a wonderful legacy he left us.....I wish he'd got to see his daughter grow up. R.I.P. Kurt Cobain 💔 Dave Grohl was Nirvana's drummer who is now famously the frontman of the Foo-Fighters.

Went to a diverse high school and I was jamming on bus for hour to put bball game, I never talked would just sit with walkman on and vibe out and get in the zone we one day I was just rocking my head a bunch and during the game I had a monster game so one of my teammate's, one of the black ones because I had black white and Hispanic teammates but he said bruh what was you listening to you was zoned out today and I played it on boombox on bus ride back with everyone and literally the next day 3/4 of my team came up to me with a blank cassette and said can you dub me that tape. It became our song for rest of year. We would play this one in lockerroom right before every game

Truly a great band! Their whole album "Nevermind" was tight. If you want to listen to more of Nirvana, just a raw gritty performance, check out their MTV Unplugged. On another topic: The band that I would like to see you react to is Primus. They are hard to categorize, but, if I had to, I would say they are a Funk Metal Band that has a unique sound. I would start with "Too Many Puppies", "Tommy the Cat", "Jerry was a Racecar Driver", "My Name is Mud", "American Life", and "Blue Collar Tweekers". That would be a start, I could go on and on. But I won't.

If they weren’t the ambassadors for grunge who knows if the world would have like the other bands that came in at the same time as them. I think no matter what everyone says we all know nirvanas place in rock n roll.

Hey Shawn and Mel! You came to my attention through my friend's channel Sexy Monkey AKA Sacha. I'm glad you liked Smells Like Teen Spirit. For me, Nirvana's best song is Scentless Apprentice which I highly recommend. Heart Shaped Box, Milk It, All Apologies, tourettes are very good songs off of their following album,In Utero, which I thought was much better, not that Nevermind is a bad album, but I think In Utero and Bleach are better. Check out About A Girl on Bleach. Also, there are some other very good songs on Nevermind like In Bloom, Breed, On A Plain, Come As You Are and Lithium. It was a shame that Kurt Cobain, was found dead at 27 in his Washington home. There are some people that believe very strongly, that despite the official version of Cobain's death being the case of a suicide, there are still some people that strongly believe that he was murdered and that his wife Courtney Love had something to do with it. Really enjoyed the video! Keep up the good work!

Nevermind is a better introduction to Nirvana for someone that isn’t really into Rock music.

Now react to "Smells Like Nirvana" by Weird Al right after re-watching this video. Al even tracked down the same guy that played the janitor for his version. Kurt loved that Weird Al parodied him.

Good reaction as always, guys. But just to add some context, this song changed the game when it came to 'rock' --- it was the song that basically killed the 'Glam Rock' 1980s era, and officially began the mainstream movement of the Grunge Rock (Alternative Rock) era of the 1990s to today (and yes, there were other bands such as 'The Pixies' that were doing Grunge Rock years prior around 1987 etc, but Nirvana was really the first to bring Grunge Rock to the mainstream, hitting #1 on the Billboard charts). Anyway, this song and 'Nirvana' represent the voice of the 1990s Gen-X generation...as did Biggie Smalls and Tupac. "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was the Gen X anthem...lol

This is so crazy to me that 1. She was able to pick up that this is indeed one of the classic rock songs out there by first listen and 2. That they are like "who's this lead singer" lol just crazy to think there are people out there that don't know the legend and talent that is Kurt Cobain who brought grunge rock to media and changed rock music for that time. Just an additional note he tragically committed suicide back in 94 I believe. RIP to a legend.
