I will personally say, this is one hell of a brain teasing challenge. Because you see a board like that, your brain thinks "Tic-Tac-Toe" automatically. So while doing this at first, your subconscious says "3 in a row", but when you hear to not get 3 in a row, then it's more challenging to do cuz that's all that you're thinking of. Trick is to get the mind n body to work together

There’s only 10 unique possible patterns to put the coins, considering all symmetrical patterns as the same. Most people’s minds would employ heuristics, so even if you brute force the solution in your mind starting from the corner of the grid, you would likely to solve this problem quickly. One thing to note is to avoid the middle cell as that is the one that would certainly cause three in a row. So once you take out that possibility, there’s significantly much less possibilities to run through your mind.

You can go more systematically and think: If you have to place 6 and there are 9, that means there are 3 "holes" or empty boxes All of those 3 empty boxes have to align in a row, because otherwise the coins would fill in a row Now you just have to go though a few possibilities
