Johnny Cash was a household name. A few of his songs or covers of tell stories. Just after this Jimmy Dean recorded Big John, or Big Bad John? Don't remember which it's titled. But it paints a real descriptive picture in your head. 🤠🏞️🐂

This performance was the very first time he preformed it, if you watch back again, you'll notice Johnny glancing down at the lyrics he scribbled down so he could remember them. Next scene "Sue" is in the principals office waiting to be disciplined, and that is when we fade into a flashback scene of his dad leaving and naming him Sue. One my Godfathers (have two, twins John and Paul), John was a singer/songwrite in Nashville since i was a kid - he shared so many stories with me and introduced me to all things country, blue grass, and folk. Times with him were never boring. He is 82 now (RIP Paul), still plays, and is rarely seen without his guitar. I introduce him to all the new rock and he likes anything that tells a good story, regardless of genre.

Johnny Cash is indeed a great story teller, but you gotta give credit to Shel Silverstein for the lyrics (he wrote a lot of both thoughtful and funny books and poetry-, for example The Missing Piece and the Giving Tree.

You should react to a song called "For As Long as the Grass Shall Grow" that was from Johnny's concept album "Bitter Tears" that told the experience of Native Americans. The song is based on the many false promises made by the white leaders and broken over and over. One hit was "Ballad of Ira Hayes" about a heroic Pima soldier (maybe Marine) who helped raise the American flag on Iwo Jima. When I had my DNA checked, I was sad to find no Native American. Needless to say, he had to fight every two to three years to prove that the new kid wasn't a sissy. His mom didn't have as good a reason for giving him this name.
