Being highly skilled doesn't necessarily mean you have leadership qualities. Teams make this mistake often. Same with old players joining young teams. Everyone just assumes that they will mentor the kids. Being an older player doesn't necessarily make you someone who is good at coaching/mentoring.

There has never been a rookie captain in the NHL before. I feel like there should be a clause in the CBA that prevents rookies from that sort of pressure.

I foresee a similar scenario playing out as to the 2015-16 Oilers. Andrew Ference had been Captain in 2014-15, but when McDavid joined the team for the next season, they went four-A's (iirc it was Ference, Hall, Eberle, and Nuge) for the whole season, I believe someone else took Ference's "A" when he got hurt. And only after a full season, did they grant McDavid the captaincy. Probably similar scenario here- four A's (Hall possibly being one of those again lol) and then Bedard gets the "C" in `24.

Just have three A's not named Bedard for starters, and see if Bedard does enough in his rookie season to become the fourth A in his D+1 season. Simple as that. You don't even know if Bedard is going to like the locker room environment.

I agree with all of this. I wonder if Chicago is even going to have a Captain this season. I could see them foregoing it while they transition out of the Kane/Toews era and into the future. Maybe it changes next season, maybe it doesn't. But I think giving Bedard the C right out of camp would be a mistake.

Also, can you imagine the reaction of the rest of the team where some guy who has never played a game in the NHL, doesn’t know where the change room is, has never been in a tough game with you is supposed to be your captain now, and the captain before him was Toews?

let the kid play one season with as little on his shoulders on possible, let him find the fun of playing in this league instead of potentially crumbling with all this added weight. i’m sure he’ll be fine, but you wouldn’t want to risk anything like this.

Agreed. It would be horrible to name him the captain already. They seem to be doing a good job of bringing in some vets and having a little bit of talent on the team already. The team should always focus on taking things off a young players mind. Could you imagine how much it would weigh on him mentally if had to wear the C in his rookie year?!!

I get it this dude is dubbed to be a generational talent like Ovi, Crosby, Kane, Stamkos, McDavid, Matthews, Bergeron, etc but you can't expect someone to be named captain just because of their possible playing style especially if its when a guy has little to no experience. People can make any argument they want about crosby or mcdavid cause they are generational talents who were honored to do so but it isn't always going to be the same way. We can include Toews and Landeskog too cause they got that honor very early despite not being in the "generational talent category". Most people in fact whether they are generational talents or normal players they don't get it till their mid 20s at least I mean Ovi got it when he was 24 and Stamkos got it when he was 23-24 and Bergeron didnt get it till he was 35 so that shows how waiting is necessary and giving them fair opportunities to adapt first and learn first at a relatively gradual pace before receiving such an honor (since these people come from all over the world and have learned in different ways) rather than be impulsive and do it simply cause of the shitty reporting by the media. Crosby wasn't the captain of the Pens until his third season. Mario Lemieux was the captain during Sid's rookie season, and the Pens did not have a captain during Sid's second season. Give him a few years, let him earn it, since being named captain is usually done by the players.

Well said, he does not need any added pressure. I would say it could be 3-4 years before he gets the C, first you get is one of the A's. There are many great players, big scores that never got the C. If going by just scoring why did Kane not have the C and Toews the A, it's about leadership quality in the player.

McDavid got the C after a full season. which as an oilers fan i agree with. finally now as an oilers fan we are seeing him as a captain bts on oilers plus I think it’s called. but it 1000% is not a given to give a top prospect a letter that early. some guys may be the best player in their team but never get the C. that’s the way things go. you are right about this. we ARE in the age now where there is so much hype and so much pressure on the rookie sensations to become captain right away. but i don't think it's GOING AWAY. he is going to feel like he HAS to wear the C, especially since he'll be asked about it constantly and the media will get on him for it. we are probably in the period now where every super rookie is going to be a captain before 19 now. doesn't make it easy, doesn't make it right. but it's here.

I'm not advocating for it, and I like the idea of waiting, but I suspect the Blackhawks would find that this kid should be the captain after the preseason skates. It's got nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with him just being a leader in everything he does. We seen it over and over in Regina and the Pats didn't need to wait past his rookie year either (hub). He will develop with or without a C. I also like the idea of a humble captain and he would fit that mould, able to ask those veteran guys what to do. Just my take after seeing it for 2.5 years in Regina.

Kane spent years without a letter on his sweater, and there was nothing wrong with that. When he eventually wore it, he deserved to have it. Bedard will get there eventually i have no doubt, timeline doesnt matter really as long as he deserves it when he gets it.

As a Hawks fan I wish we'll wait for a couple of season before he is named the captain. However, I don't want a "somebody" be given the C in the meantime. I want long captaincies so it means that much more to wear it.

The thing that's always annoyed me about captaincy is that fans essentially think it should just be the player that's the best on the team, or really good...instead of realizing it should be the player the TEAM wants to have be their captain, that represents them and speaks on their behalf.

It's cute but it's not gonna happen nor should it. Adult hockey fans have common sense to know that a rookie will not, and should not, be Captain. No matter who you are, the C is earned. If all goes as expected his first year, Bedard could have an excellent chance at getting an A for his sophomore outing. Season 3 is a LONG time away but maybe that's where you'll see the C. If bro carries the Hawks on his back and wins a Cup his rookie year, then I'd change my tune and demand he be captain for year 2.

Everyone is looking at Connor Bedard like hes some sort of god. Yes ive seen him play and i know for a fact, hes an unbelievable generational talent, i hate to burst your bubble, but the kid hasnt even played a game in the National Hockey League yet. As great as i think hes going to be, just dont be disappointed if hes not as great as people expect. Besides hes only 18 and imo its not really fair to expect this kid to be the second coming of McDavid straight out the gate from the opening night faceoff. Thats all im saying 🤷‍♂️
