I am surprised you don't think McIntosh solid state amps don't have great build quality and an amazing sound. They make everything in house, they use all high end quality parts in their amps, and they have a huge following with great reliability. All of the gear is made in their facility in New York including the metal framing and glass.

McIntosh are great. Built like tanks! My macs from the 70s are all original! Never been serviced and still sound great! Autoformers last forever and are low maintenance! Not like a Krell that heats up to cooking levels. The parts will fail after a few years and a rebuilt of those big krells are crazy expensive. I talk from experience

$29000 for a 400 watt amp is just plain idiotic. There is no way this amp is worth that much more than a Parasound JC5 or a Rotel Michi X5. I bet most people in a blind listening test would not know the difference. You are better off to put more money into quality speakers than wasting money on a over priced amp. I am not saying the amp does not sound spectacular but it is not $23000 better than any of the amps I have mentioned.

The new MSB amps are outstanding. I‘ve compared them with probably all big swiss amps (yes, I‘m from Switzerland), such as soulution, CH Precision and so on and the MSB amps (even the entry stereo amp 202) are equally good, if not better. In the top segment, synergy plays a decisive role and decides who wins.

As far as McIntosh goes you don't need to be super innovators, you just need to have a great sound (which they do) to be satisfied. And a a more reasonable budget that way more people can afford.

How I miss my 1966 Mac MC275 & C20 with original tubes...run through big Altecs with the fine cabinet work...mmmm. Gone though. I have a set of EV Sentry III with Goodmand 15" drivers as they match better to the horns but never heard it together with the Mac. Just need a little Fisher 100 or 101 to run them! What most people don't know is a $200 RG Dynamic processor will do wonders for solid state & the soundstage...even a Mac 2300 with the XRT20's...was I shocked!

Thanks for the interesting thoughts. I am a big McInstosh fan, but strongly believe they need to stop making half of their product and focus much more on “core” audio products. definitely need to exit a/v receivers and amps, exit speakers, drop pointless products like their streamer (it’s objectively a dinosaur) and invest in pre-amps and amps, a few really good DACs and transports, and that’s it. Sometimes one needs to shrink in order to grow. There are a number of high end watch brands that have completely revived themselves with this strategy. And keep the MEN220 dsp, it’s really great

@@joeslacker1020 Hi, I have been using two of the Audionics CC-2 for around 40 years. Some people claim it's a very 'musical' sounding amp. It came out in 1978, I think it was around 500 dollars, was class AB-up to ten watts in class A mode. 70 watts per channel, is bridgeable for 220 watts and the slew rate doubles. Some models have a functional clipping indicator-the red LED will flash brighter (the clipping detector circuitry is sometimes unpopulated so it would be easy to rework and add the components). I can recommend this model. The only downside is the case can get hot if it's warm in the room plus there is a buzz/hiss background sound at idle but not unpleasant. I was using the amp on my Altec 604-8H which is sensitive at 104 db at 1w/1m. Look on the audiokarma forums for more technical info. Good luck.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Jay. IME, speakers make the biggest difference in sound quality, and any sensible Hifi amp built in the USA would allow the majority of audiophiles that spend $20-30k on their entire system to sink most of the money in the speakers and still enjoy blissful, realistic, engaging sound. I find most SS amps too clinical and have no soul like tube amps, but each to their own.

As you stated, most people watching you can not afford the brands you display and review for us. If your interested, (... and probably more than 50% of us are.) review new amps/preamps in the $8 to12k range. We understand that we're not getting the "best" out there, but hey, something is better than nothing. A lot of us on somewhat of a "budget" will look for used equipment in this range knowing that possibly thousands can be knocked-off the new price. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy your reviews of ultra high end equipment that I know I'll never be able to afford, because I love audio equipment, period. Thanks for reading Jay...

Thanks Jay. Anther great video. If we start talking best tube amps in the world that would be top of the line offers from from ARC, VTL and VAC are right in the mix. If I was going to add another US solid state amp to list of US amps it would be of course that would have to be the D Agostino Relentless. I have not heard it yet (would like to) but have heard most other offerings from D Agostino which have been pretty decent solid state sounding amps and The Relentless is built to much higher standards than the Momentum Series and a different design. May be one day you will be able to bring in a pair of Relentless Monos.

All the high end companies need to do is put their prior high end design in new cases rather than retiring them when they release new designs. Jst think of the $$'s they'd save by taking advantage of that prior R&D investment.

Jeff Rowland used to make the best ss amps in the US. His model 6,8 and 9 were ( and still could be considered) world beaters. When he went to Class D modules, he left something behind, BUT now with his new model 735...he is back on his game. Personally, I would take a class AB JR over any Boulder..

Jay, have you tried Soulution? My friend has a shop. In his shop, the Soulution amps driving Maestro Utopias, and Nola Mini Grands had very lifelike dynamics. Which to me is the hardest to do. Tonality can change with cables as well as inserting different pre's. With the Soulution pre, some things can sound a little dry. Throw in some tubes with high capacitance for dynamic shifts, then wow. Might want to just try it out. Love the videos btw, keep it up!

I recently heard the latest combo from Mark Levinson - the No.523 pre and the No.524 stereo power amp - and they are definitely in the same league as Gryphon, Boulder or Constellation. I don't know if the brand suffers a bit from the Lexus connection (i.e. maybe it's seen as being a bit 'lifestyle' by the audiophile crowd) but their R&D budget (and engineering team) are probably bigger than the two brands you mention combined. Listen without prejudice.

@@eliasron6464 I worked at the first UK dealership to get a pair of Grand Utopias. In fact I made this little video: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/g9mUapNq0Li9eJc.html So that was with Burmester obviously. And we also tried them with Gryphon and Levinson.... And to be absolutely honest with you we could never get them sounding really great with anything. In fact we kind of gave up, coming to the conclusion they were probably the most difficult speakers to set up we had ever had. So, you have already tried powerful valve amps with McIntosh, but my hunch would be to stay on that road and maybe give VTL or Audio Research a spin. Because the (very good) solid state options we tried never seemed right either.

I agree with you about Boulder Amps. The only thing comparable is Jeff Rowland 925 or 825 amplifiers. 25 years ago the Jeff Rowland model 9 monoblocks were amazing. I had a friend who had them with the matching Jeff Rowland preamp on ESP Concert Grand speakers. The Parasound JC-1 mono blocks the last 15 years were really good amps

All opinion is subjective and malarkey at best. Period. The only way to determine the “best” amp is to have the manufacturers all provide objective test data including acoustic measurements and comprehensive testing on all internal parts like cap and resistor measurement results using spectrum analyzers ( or whatever tool is used), environmental test results, drop, gforce, pull test, static, reflow, electrical tolerance, stress test, salt spray, life cycle, and all the other litmus of testing that is involved for the whole unit and it’s incremental parts. Also, in house and field failure data and what do those failures encompass and to what degree does the company determine root cause and make the component more robust. Finally any industry standard certification received for the manufacturing process that ensures consistency and predictability for the final product.
