This is truly the hardest reaction I've ever done. The way my heart hurts. Wow. I want to first say that those who were impacted by the Sewol Ferry tragedy - my heart goes out to them and those victims will truly never be forgotten. I pray for their families. The song itself was truly a work of art - with the music video bringing it to life and establishing such a deep and intricate meaning. This is a reaction that will stay with me for a long time.
Prayers to those who were affected by this.
xo, love you guys.

Yep. I listen to it almost every day as a silent protest! Not South Korean but who would want their government pretending to be democratic but really being a dictatorship! When the viewing numbers speak then maybe those responsible will regain at least a semblance of shame. So if you feel like joining the silent protest. Watch it as often as you can.

Thank you so much for watching the explanation first. As someone who lost someone due to the Sewol Ferry tragedy, it means a lot. Though many mean no harm, it makes me upset when I see people laugh during the MV. For example at the pile of clothes or the food fight scene because they don't know the real meaning behind them. This song never fails to have me bursting into tears not even a minute in, and I'm glad you took the time to look into the song. Once again thank you for this reaction, I appreciate it a lot.

My dear "parkagust," there are no words. Such a loss changes who one is. Please know that every time I listen to any version of "Spring Day," I do so in honor or memory of all of the victims, families, friends, other loved ones, and all of the helpers who were not allowed to do their jobs. OMG - I am completely wrecked. I know the pain of this has not left you or the other families involved - the broken pieces of my heart go out to you. I lost my daughter almost 4 years ago, but had the privilege of holding her hand, stroking her hair and speaking words of love as she crossed over - I can't imagine losing a loved one in this manner. The pain never leaves us. Hugs

As koreans, we can’t forget the Sewol Ferry incident. Every year, when April 16 comes back, my heart feels so heavy. I’m a senior in high school, and the school give yellow ribbons to students and remember them while receving education. I’m just thankful that they released this song as a long-time fan of bts. Thank you for looking for the explanation video! We won’t forget🎗

When people ask me why, at 62, I am so "obsessed" with a Korean "boy band", I talk about the depth of their music....and this song stands out in that role. How anyone can not be affected by this song is beyond me. It truly exemplifies why this group has broken through the k pop label and captured hearts all over the world. I believe t6he captain of the ferry, who survived by evacuating the ship while the entrapped teens drowned in their cabins, ended up being sent to prison for life. You can look into that more yourself.

For me this song is a prime example of what sets BTS apart. Yes Spring Day is a beautiful and emotional song but knowing the history behind it hits even harder. I would tell anyone who says that they wouldn't like BTS to listen to this song along with the explanation videos and then come tell me they hated it without tears. When C19 first started getting bad the boys did this song several times in various online events (such as their NPR performance) and it's wonderful knowing that they're missing us just as badly. Hopefully this brings a smile to someone but Yoongi called it their zombie song that never dies last year in 2021. There was an online poll about which BTS song would fit particular events and Spring Day was number one for a lot of them. He had to work to find something other than Spring Day as number 1. I've also heard throughout the years that the general public in Korea, who necessarily aren't into "idol" music, know Spring Day and love it too. Whenever the boys have a comeback (new music released) the song rises back up on the charts - hence it's title as Queen.

The “I miss you” is the last text message from a student who had sent that to his parents before the ferry sunk. Honestly this is the song that got me into bts and the message truly. It’s amazing how we whom don’t know those people or their families can empathize with them and still remember on what happened those many years ago, innocent people passing away when they deserved to live is just tearful

This is a very emotional video , and song. While the song was not specifically written about this tragic event the mv definitely references the ferry tragedy along with fans interpretation of the song. The song was written by RM and Suga along with other producers about loss, grief and moving on so the tragedy fits very well to the song. BTS donated to the families involved and even paid respect by going to the place it happened. This song means a lot to many people not just because of the ferry tragedy but their own loss what ever that maybe. So we are all here for the emotions any song brings out in you.

This is so true. I first got into bts a couple of months after I lost my mom to cancer. The same day it came out I listened to it and I swear I cried and cried and cried. I was living with a cousin at that time, so I had to like try to cry silently and was so hard. I cried till I fell asleep. I listened to this song on repeat for like maybe two weeks. Still to this day every time I see the video or listen to the song I get really sad bc I still miss my mom like it was yesterday.

I know this isn’t related to bts in anyway but I wanted to share this heartbreaking story of a couple who tied their wrists together while in the boat already knowing their fate so they won’t get separated even after their death. This really made my heart broken and the fact that they already knew their fate was something no one should have to go through. I’m really happy Bts made this music video and truly love them for that 💜

The courage behind this MV is seldom really recognised. Artists were blacklisted for speaking out or for making donations to the parents' organisation. BTS' donation was one third of all their income that year, and they made it privately (all their donations start out being private) and visited the families privately that year. I applaud you for having the grit to watch all this information. I remember news of the capsize and sinking on BBC news at the time - significant loss of life was mentioned, and that many of those lost were students. That was awful enough, but we did not at that time hear that this event was wholly avoidable, and that the deaths were also most likely avoidable too. The whole scandal was due to illegal overloading of the vessel (which was in the news report) and the active intervention of authorities to prevent rescue work. It is impossible to understand why they would do that, except in a wholly pointless attempt to divert blame from themselves. While the song is a powerful evocation of loss and sorrow, when the MV was planned, BTS will certainly have been aware that it was about the loss of the ferry and those students - they could have objected to this, but showed considerable courage in proceeding with it. I have never heard of just a band ("who are fundamentally not important") having this kind of courage. This is why I will always be ARMY.

Couple things about the song: 1. Revealed in a Vlive, RM got the idea of Spring day after seeing a leaf fall from a tree. The chorus only had “leaves are falling”. 2.V recorded a guide for the song and the chorus was very different to what we got in the final version. You can actually search it up on KZfaq. 3.For the live performances, J-Hope would take over the part in the first verse where Rm Sings. There’s also minor changes in the live performances in terms of members singing as well from parts swapping to even background vocals.

- The ferry was carrying more than six times the weight it was originally designed for to make extra money per trip. Most of the illegal modifications placed the weight at the top and when it shifted it made the ferry tip over. - It wasn't the usual captain that day. He had raised concerns about the safety onboard and had been removed for it. - The captain on the day is currently serving 36 years for murder and several crew members were convicted of murder, negligence, violating marine laws, etc. (This is all from the very detailed and graphic Wikipedia page on the tragedy) - While it's true that the song wasn't written about the Sewol tragedy, the video, album cover and title definitely refer to it. - When asked if it referred to a specific event Jin said in an interview with Esquire Nov. 2020 that "it is about a sad event but also about longing".

I can't hear this song without crying. This is the queen song, it was still on the charts in Korea last year, might still be now. BTS have never confirmed that the song is about Sewol, in a vlive RM said it was about loss of friendship, but I'm convinced the video is about Sewol. There's an overall softness to the video that is comforting and painful at the same time, especially Jimin looking straight into the camera in quite a few shots, feels like a hug. In general it blows my mind how they can convey emotion just with their melodies, like you said, even before ever seeing the lyrics you knew this song was sad. The dad speaking in front of the council completely choked up who then bows to the floor pleading with them. The parents by the sea in agony trying to get the coast guard on the ship to do something while there's still time. Just omg. Gut wrenching, heartbreaking. Hope you're ok, hugs 💜

(Not sure if my comment got posted, so writing it again). Thank you for going through this. I bawled when I first saw the explanation video. The detail is amazing and makes for a convincing case that the MV is a direct tribute to the tragedy. But if you didn't know about it, the song would just sound nice and melancholy. IMO, I think that's why the song has never fallen off the Korean charts since it was released in 2017. It brings comfort and gives the young survivors an almost secret way to express their sorrow, to show that they will never forget their peers; it's also like disguised subversion, a way to say f u to the corrupt people/government behind this senseless loss, as in 'this song will never leave the charts, and we will never forget what you did (or didn't do)'. Please also watch a live of this song - the choreo is very poetic and touching. This is one of the best kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mbOhoNGZzLSwiI0.html. And also the dance practice kzfaq.info/get/bejne/laecgqeVpq_Sgo0.html so you can see the flow of it all, without camera cuts. 💜

I want to add that the song, as many of their songs, is really able to represent many situations. Italian ARMY explained in an excellent way why it does represent that too, and why those hints were not said by the band, they never presented the song refering to the tragedy but to missing friends of Suga and RM. And also, when the pandemic started, when the quarantines started, when the tours were cut, spring day became to represent the hope that the winter -the pandemic- would find an end, and the boys talked about the coming spring in the Tiny Desk and in every online concert that they had to do without public. Also, in the music video there are references to Snowpiercer and Thos who walk away from Omelas, but also to Inception, and also to the story of their fictional characters in the Bangtan Universe. What I mean is that ARMY could intepretate the signs about the tragedy, bringing it to light to the rest of the world and helping those memories to become unforgettable for many more people, but really this song means every lost, every hope, in every life. Their choreography is also beatiful, and also some interpreted it in different ways. An eternal song.

The tradedy happened 7years ago(year of 2014) and it called Sewol ferry incident. Total 476 passengers included 325 high school students were heading to Jeju Island for their field trip. huge wave hit ferry and ferry lost balanced and sink. Due to this tragedy only 172 passengers survived and the others were all dead. Most of students followed the directions of what captain said which was stay at your spot and do not move a and I believe all the pure students listened and followed the government's direction and waited for their rescue by governor. But so sadly most of students died because of the incompetent government after this tragedy Korean brought the president down and put her Jail!!! We never forgot this tragedy and I'm so sorry to all the deaths.

As you know, Spring Day is the queen of BTS songs and has never been out of the Korean music chart for four years since its release. It's a song that means a lot to ARMY. The former president of South Korea, Park Geun Hye, was impeached in 2016. She drove the Ferry Sewol tragedy to political issues and mobilized the media and government organizations to cover up the cause of the tragedy. She and the media drove the bereaved families to people who were crazy about compensation. I will never forget that when the Ferry Sewol tragedy happened, MBC News in Korea did not talk about rescuing the victims or the government's fault, and talked about how much compensation the family would receive. It shocked me. The families only wanted to find out the cause of the accident and to clarify the reason why the government blocked the rescue of the victims. Nothing has been revealed about the Ferry Sewol tragedy even now because there are still many subordinates left during the Park administration. Especially the media, which used to be the puppet of the Park administration, is still alive and attacking the current Korean government. According to an 2020 interview with a bereaved family of Ferry Sewol, BTS and their CEO, PD Bang, visited them about 200 days after the tragedy, and donated $100,000. BTS were also very young (most of the victims were the youngest member, Jungkook's age), and Big Hit didn't have much power and the financial situation wasn't good because it was before they gained popularity. Nevertheless, they did this at the risk of being blacklisted. At that time, because BTS released many songs criticizing Korean society(ex. Am I Wrong?, Baepsae, etc), many ARMYs and even other fandoms were worried that they would be blacklisted. And... According to the family, one of the victims was ARMY. The families didn't know who the boys were at the time, but a few years later, when BTS became famous, the bereaved families said they realized that the boys were singers their child liked.

But it was a world away & I just thought "That's so sad," but moved on in that way Americans do so often. When I got into BTS in 2020 & Spring Day's ties to the tragedy came up, I watched a documentary about it that covered it almost minute by minute. I sobbed my way through it. Every single kid on that ferry became mine, if that makes sense? I can't imagine losing my child.

Some kids are laughing and making jokes not knowing how series of a situation that they’re in and because they blindly trusted the adults who were meant to help them, they died. It’s infuriating. The way the government handled the situation was also disgusting. Absolutely disgusting. It makes me so upset that many of the people responsible didn’t get the punishments they deserved. Even the captain and crew of the ship that escaped while kids were dying didn’t really get the punishments they deserved.

As a korean, I remember when sewol ferry tragedy happened in 2014. Living in the US, the news that I got was delayed by aroudn 20-30 minutes and all my parents turned on the television was news of sewol. After growing up and becoming their age finally, it saddens me that they are still so young and everything that they worked towards, hoped of, and wanted. Something I say a lot is, when a person dies, it's not really just that one person dying, it's multiple people dying. Someone's child, someone's love one, many people's friend, passes away with that person. It was a tragedy that should not have happened and under the president should have had the coast guard come. Even though I did not lose someone as many people did and as even more people claim to have, we koreans feel the pain of the parents, the last moments of the students, etc.. It brought korea as a whole and i hold hope that this will never happen again. In a capitalistic world where money and power is prioritized over the lives of innocent people, we must learn that this incident isn't the past but continues on as a problem.

Hi, I am back. Good reaction, ty. Hugs & cuddles. You really jumped right in, wince. This was a lot. My 1st time hearing Spring Day was on Class of 2020. They did 3 performances. I loved both 2 new songs on 1st listen. It took me a month or more to actually watch the MV. Than I watched the explanation and was shoock. Later I watched the 2nd explanation by Italian Army and dang. I cried. I love this song. I never cry when I hear it. So much feels! But I do cry with u when your learning about its history. This song has been on the charts for years after it's release. We call it the Queen. I hope u watch Class of 2020. They did a wonderful job with their performances. Hugs. Love u. #YouAreEnough Have a good week! -ARMY NY USA 💜

The first time you watch them perform it in real time, there just is nothing that can prepare you. I became ARMY after New Years Rockn Eve 2019/2020 right b4 the pandemic hit. As the world shut down we were all emotional but they kept doing stuff to lift our spirits. In May they were invited by the Obamas to speak & perform at the Dear Class of 2020 graduation (it’s a good watch) & they started their performance w/ Boy w/ luv so no one was prepared when they performed spring day. God the wailing noise I made. It just was ripped out of me. But everyone had the same reaction. The Twitter timeline was a mess. There never will be anyone (musical artist or otherwise) that could ever be like these 7 men. It just goes beyond words

This song has a permanent place in my heart. The song and the visuals give off a journey of emotions: sadness-> anger-> desperation -> realization -> hope. Every time Spring Day plays, I go through all of those emotions all over again. Knowing the meaning makes it hurt so much more but in many ways it allows us to remember the tragedy and the children who were lost. Such a tragically beautiful song

When I saw that you were going to watch these videos, I put off watching your reaction because I knew it was going to break your heart. As it has mine and so many of us and as it does every time I watch these videos. Yet I watch them with different reactors because I feel that that is a small action I can take to demonstrate my empathy and sorrow. It seems beyond belief that power consistently cares more for its own aggrandizement than for the well-being of those it has power over, but it happens over and over. I ask myself often when we will redefine power and what it will take before we recognize compassion, kindness, respect and intelligence as the appropriate and proper demonstrations of power. I send my heartfelt love to you, just as you share yours with us, along with masses of tender hugs. I hope you can find comfort and solace. 💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜💜

I a\have been waiting for,you to react to this song. I was in Korea when this tragedy happened and again a few years later. I will never forget the anguish of those parents begging for help for their children. The whole situation was disgusting. As a parent, I can only imagine how they felt. I remember vividly when I was there a few years after and the parents were STILL trying to get answers, get the truth from authorities. I have an image I carry to this day of standing on the side of the main road in Seoul as parents marched carrying pictures of their deceased children, begging for answers. It was a rainy day and I stood there and cried like a baby. I could not believe that 2 years later and they still could not get closure. When I heard that President Park was impeached I actually cheered. This was a heartbreaking video and you handled it well. The fact that BTS put their own careers in jeopardy to get this message out and that they did it in such a beautiful and memorable way is testament to their passion and skill. Another great reaction Lex. Thank you for covering it - I know it wasn’t easy. 💜💜🇦🇺

spring day holds a very special place in my heart. ive heard fake love in 2018 but ultimately ignored bts, and then dynamite when it came out but i ignored bts again. and then around mid march 2021 i came across a video on my fyp on tiktok of a compilation of the sewol ferry tragedy students’ recordings from their cellphones before they died. interested in these kinds of stories, i looked up what happened and watched the entire video of the compilation. i then read comments saying “so happy bts made a song about this” and i was shocked. i had no idea bts would do something like this as i thought they were just basic pop. i watched the music video with the explanation and i was in tears. right at that moment is when i fell in love with them and ultimately saved me. i will forever love spring day. it will forever hold a special place in my heart. and i will defend spring day with my entire life. if it wasnt for spring day, i wouldve never discovered bts, and i wouldnt be here right now as bts saved my life. long live queen spring day.

spring day will forever have a hold on me, and rightfully so. when it comes to tragedies like the Sewol Ferry i strongly believe, especially children, should never have to die in fear. and i strongly believe no parent should ever out live their child, especially when they were so young. No one should ever be terrified of dying. No one should ever die how they did. Especially when it was a school field trip where they should be safe, always, because it’s the schools job to care for the children. The song not only holds meaning to those that lost loved ones in the tragedy but also those that have lost loved ones rather in any tragedy or just in general. Spring Day is such a beautiful sad but meaningful song and deserves the spot at #1 for eternity. i hope those that passes know how much they’re loved and forever remembered with this song🤍

Spring Day is such an emotional song. Just for someone who has experienced loss, the words of the song, that we ask our loved ones to please wait for us longer because there will be a spring day and we will be united…makes me so emotional. Especially as I’ve lost my mom and my dad is currently dying. The Sewol Ferry tragedy is something us in America never heard of…but hundreds of kids from elementary to high school died, were sacrificed when they could have lived. The captain and many of his crew (including the ones who made the mistake leading to the capsize) selfishly abandoned ship while telling the civilians to stay where they were, told all the children to stay in their rooms. The local media reported falsely to the families that the children were all saved. It was hours later before they learned the truth. I remember one story of a little boy who put his life jacket on his little brother and then pushed him out the window, telling him to tell their parents that he loved them. The older brother didn’t make it. They were in elementary or middle school I think. It’s heartbreaking. Some civilian divers went down and saved as many as possible, or really they recovered as many as possible. Rescue divers even died. Crew members did refuse to go with the rest of the crew, staying with the kids and dying. I implore you to read more about it, even if it’s just Wikipedia, because something like this really helps explain Korean society as a whole. The way those in authority want those under them to obey and not question them, the way people demand things and part of why BTS is so loved by some people and hated by others.

A few thoughts about BTS’s SPRING DAY: There’s a great dance practice for this song that you might want to put on your list. The choreo is amazing; there’s even a part where the boys form the prow of a ship. (I’m talking about the original dance practice, not the “lovely” version.) In the part where JUNGKOOK runs back through the laundromat, the time on the clock is frozen at the time the ferry sank, which was either 9:34 AM or 9:37 AM, I forget which. Regarding the book THE ONES WHO WALK AWAY FROM OMELAS, it’s actually a short story. I found it on KZfaq and it only took me about 10 minutes to read through it. Worth your time. The captain of the ship was doing something illegal that he didn’t want to be found out. That’s why he didn’t want a big rescue operation with all kinds of police and rescue personnel roaming through the ship looking in all the rooms. But it took the ship a long time to sink, and there was way more than enough time to have rescued every last person on there. People were standing on the dock looking at the listing ship, begging for someone to give the rescue order, but he kept saying no. He either had some kind of illegal contraband on board or his cargo was over the weight limit, something like that, but to care more about his own skin than about the lives of hundreds of innocent teenagers is just one of the most appalling things I’ve ever heard in my life. And he got caught in the end anyway; as far as I know he’s currently serving a prison sentence. This was a well done reaction, Alexa. You presented it in exactly the right way, and chose the two best explanation videos. Thank you for doing this.

This is a tough one alright, but really not surprising that those in power could do this. This is not new and it still goes on. The amazing thing is the courage of BTS, they had only debuted a couple years before and still struggling or at least hadn't reached the top where they could be comfortable financially. They still had the courage to stand up and do something about it. Really amazing considering the Park govt were blacklisting everyone left and right. So glad people stood up together and eventually Park et al were removed. Let's always be alert to what govt & media sell us, for in the end most isn't for our good when you look at things clearly. I've learned NEVER to take anything media/govt tell me at face value anymore. They DO NOT have our best interests at heart. Known this since I was around 13 yrs old (now in my 50's). Really sad, but just makes me appreciate and love these young men all the more. Borahae!

Such a beautiful song, it’s inspiration came to RM while watching leaves blow in the wind and thinking about his old friends. He wrote the melody and some of the accompanying. V actually wrote some lyrics for the song but ultimately they went with RMs lyrics which were accompanied by other’s contributions including Pdogg and Hitman. Legend has it, Suga writes his rap verse about a friend who goes to prison. Also of note, JHope doesn’t have a line in the studio recording but when they went live, RM gave him the opening since he has a rap verse right after.

I was crying, but seeing you cry made me cry more. The explanation of the choreography of Spring day is amazing and painful too. I saw that for the first time a couple years ago and I still cry when I watch it. Even the song gets me teary eyed. What is amazing is that because of their fame, more and more people in the world are learning about this tragedy. So those children and their families will not be forgotten. Hopefully the world will never repeat the mistakes made. Political greed, corruption should have no place in our society...we are all human being...doesn't matter what nation or race, age or religion. We all deserve respect. I am very thankful to BTS for the courage to speak out.

Every time I watch documentaries about this accident I just can't believe this. Before the pandemic, I worked as a stewardess on a ferry between Morrocco and Spain. Yes, I may stay the whole day in the duty-free spraying perfumes and selling watches, jewelry, and alcohol, and just "being pretty", but we had drills very often. Sometimes every day. You just have to be alert all the time. We were prepared for what to do and everything they did on this ferry here was so wrong. It just makes my blood boil. It's not only the captain that overloads the ship but from what I saw during my duty nothing can pass unnoticed by the port authorities. I believe many people closed their eyes to some things and were aware of the possible danger. And they broke the first rule of sailing and working in the sea and ocean "Safety first!" It all comes down to this little phrase and it is the meaning to everything you do while working on ships. And this happens in every country. People have to die first, and then, they would make an investigation, or change the laws and rules or whatever. It's always like this. Recently in my country Bulgaria, 45 people died burned alive in a bus accident. They were Macedonians. It happened on highway area where people reported to be dangerous for many years, but authorities did nothing. They investigated the "owner" of the road and the missing road signs only because so many people lost their life. I am just mad. As a person whose work was to take care of other people's lives, and knowing these incidents could have been prevented. It's like the meme that goes around online "You had one job" to keep these people alive, but they failed. I just wish people in power to start to think a little bit more about not killing people/saving lives and less about making money.

Spring Day is hauntingly tragic and hopeful all at the same time. It is a beautiful song that brings to light sadness and death due to injustice while still offering hope and solace knowing that those left behind will never forget and those gone will live on forever in their hearts. It is why the song Spring Day is still charting in Korea to this day. I can’t get over how unbelievably insightful these lyrics are in that they find a way to blend hopelessness and sorrow with hopefulness and love. Well done BTS…..well done. I literally couldn't listen to Spring Day without start crying for 1 year straight and I'm still doing it sometiimes.. even before I knew the meaning, I remember the first time It came out, I cried so hard in the first seconds. Its crazy how you can feel the emotions through the sentimental music with their voices without understanding korean. I truly think that Spring Day is one of those songs that makes BTS so different, they have these series of healing and touching songs that only them can do, These type of Bangtan's songs hits you different. When I said I've never felt such a strong emotions while listening to other artists I really mean it. BTS is very special. Spring Day is such a queen and one of my favorite songs, 💜 it's so beautiful and significant. Rest in Peace.
