One thing I forgot to mention but was actually sort of fascinating. If you use a higher resolution camera, the APS-C crop at the long end gives this a 67.5mm f/2.7 equivalent. Essentially completing that 28-70/2.8 look on the long end. Would work amazing on something like the A7RV.

@@LoFiAxolotl I’m well aware, but the crop factor does have an effect on the look of the image which is the equivalent of taking the same photo with a 67.5mm f/2.7 lens.

Love the way you discuss these products! Literally one of my favorite creators in this space! Right now I’m kinda all in on Fuji, but were I to expand into Sony or L-Mount this would definitely be my wider lens. I always shoot a 35mm (or equivalent) and an 85, so this would be perfect for that wider range.

As a stills shooter, I’d prefer to just shoot with a smaller and lighter 24/35mm prime on a 60mp sensor and just crop to 26mp when I need this amount of zoom.

This is genuinely exciting. I rented and loved the canon 28-70mm F2 from an image PoV but hated the weight and only shot at 28 or 50ish. This seems near perfect… aside from the fact I’d have to buy a Panasonic or Sony to use it with.

Great review Benj. Impressive accomplishment from sigma. If somehow this would’ve been smaller and lighter I would’ve given a go. But the DGDN 24 and 50mm f2 may weight less and be easier to handle with the benefit of the extra range. Probably similar volume overall too.

I feel like this lens is more or less a 35mm 1.8 prime, that just has a little bit more on both ends than I feel it’s a proper zoom lens. Perfect for videographers in low light, but pretty niche use case for photographers.

Very interesting lens for sure..only thing for some consumers that maybe subjective of course is that the close focusing distance could have been better?.30cm is decent but wish it could have been less than that?..especially for wedding photographers..when you want to get some closer detail shots..etc..but overall definitely looks like a good choice for some people..

Thanks for the insight. Personally the focal length range is a bit odd at first sight. I cant think of many 28/35/50 shooters as those focal lengths are very close: most folks pick 28/50/90 or 24/35/75 as their trio. But this is a great lens for those who hadn't got a preference yet. Or just exploring which focal length works best.
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch 24 күн бұрын
Yeah, it’s not a “do it all” for focal lengths for sure. It does work better as a video lens though because you can use APS-C crop for that 67.5/2.7 look equivalent though.

It’s still relatively huge and 28 isn’t wide enough for it to be considered an ultra wide; moreover, with the lens protruding that much, the 28mm doesn’t feel like a 28mm from say the 28mm f2 or a ricoh griii :/

I’m definitely not trying to downplay the engineering marvel that this lens is, but I can’t help but think that since it’s already a pretty large lens, if they had just managed to squeeze it out to 24mm (24-45) they would’ve had a real endgame lens on their hands. It’s still an amazing lens though.

I tested the M43 Lumix Leica 10-25mm f1.7 and 25-50mm f1.7 and I genuinely could imagine doing a whole wedding with two bodies with just these lenses. I just don't think I could really, in my true heart, do a pro job with M43. The lenses though were absolutely perfect.

I've been rethinking a lot what I'd allow myself to do a wedding with. Most people aren't blowing up their photos huge and valuing a more authentic experience and less perfected. I've been tempted to do a wedding on film and then just using Fuji digital.
@obscurelines
@obscurelines 27 күн бұрын
@@eryndaethorvaldsen1952 I've done a lot of weddings on Fuji and they work very well, a little more discreet than my s1r. When I used to use a x100t for casual shots people loved it. Actually iny tests with the G9ii the images were absolutely fine and while you don't get depth of field, I think it's better - too often with FF I'm shooting at f5.6 for fear of having the bride in focus and the groom blurry! So I could do 2 g9iis as wedding cameras, but it's anxiety provoking. I can imagine there's good business in film camera wedding shots. Lordy, I used to do maybe 10 reels of 35mm and 3-4 of 645 for a wedding and pay a fortune for development. Good luck!

i have a serious question: you have to send this lens back to sigma and you don't get any money of them, to do a review. Why? Just for being one of the first reviewers and clicks on videos? Or being invited to some brand-events? So to be honest, no one would really tell us something bad about a lens or a camera. Sure, the brand will not tell you what you have to say, but if you have consistend critics on some brands products, they would then ignore you. That's why everyones review of products is 90+% positive. Sorry for this thougts, this is not just you, and i like your videos very much.
@benjhaisch
@benjhaisch Ай бұрын
In complete honesty, I both like doing it and have the curiosity around it, but also I’m trying to build an audience worthy of some sponsors (software, accessories, etc) to make the channel financially viable. People buying my presets/LUTs all helps too, but I think I make about $1400/mo right now on KZfaq ad revenue which is nowhere near enough to make this worthwhile for the amount of time I put in. But it’s a slow burn for sure. As for critiquing products, that’s sort of the job. But I’m not going out of my way to find bad things about it. For example, on this lens, I have no idea if the focus breathing is good or if it’s parfocal or not. I did the tests in the way I would actually use this and tried to give a honest perspective. If it was optically a bad lens, I wouldn’t have liked it and would have shown its flaws, but in my opinion the only real flaws are the size and the relatively short focal range, both of which I covered :) My allegiance always has to be to the audience and if a company wants to stop sending me things to review because I’m being honest about their products then that would say a lot more about them than me IMO.

@@benjhaisch thank you for this quick and detailed answer. i assumed, that you like reviewing new stuff. :-) I had allready some cases with brands, and i learned, if the level of honesty is to much if something don't work really well on a new product, you are out of the field. Or in my case, if you do too much with another brand, brand A don't come with new projects to you. This is more on Instagram, i don't do videos on youtube, but i ask myself to start, because i write articles for brands and camera stores and adding video could be an option. So thank you again. I really like the type of your videos, how you talk about stuff, your photography. Wish you all the best :-)
