Heat Check

Күн бұрын

Trash talking is definitely not the reason why T.J. Mcconnell drives opponents crazy. He’s actually a really nice guy and he only performed for the audience here since he was mic’d up.
So let me explain the real reason why the Pacers guard is possibly the most annoying player in the league. What up everybody my name is Stefan and this is Heat Check. Let’s get into it.
Listed at a generous 6’1’’, he’s one of the shorter players in the league, and when you watch him run, that’s also one of the slower guards in today’s NBA. And the athleticism just, isn’t there okay?
But still, with all that being said, T.J. leads the league in steals per game and this is why.
He is so smart, and hunts these opportunities on inbound passes.
What is usually the most relaxed portion of the possession, getting the ball in play, and taking it cross half court, Mcconnell stays aware and ready during that time, and turns it into a steal, and a bucket.
Against the Bucks just yesterday, Indiana scores, and you can see T.J. already has his mind made up to go for it. Jrue doesn’t expect him, and the pass is lazy as well, which turns into a steal, and the basket counts as it was goaltending. Easy 2 points.
Players always say how the most annoying guys to go against are those pesky defenders who run a lot and force turnovers. And I can only imagine it being even more infuriating when a smaller, slower, less athletic defender steals the ball right in front of their eyes.
And don’t get me wrong, I’m not knocking T.J., what he lacks in physical abilities, he makes up for it more than enough with his effort and IQ. Like, when I play I’m always the smallest guy so I strive to be just like him.
And he’s been known for his effort and IQ from his days in Philly. Watch this: He sees the situation, little time left, Kyrie is ready waiting for the pass. So he sprints there, intercepts it, and banks it in for 2 easy and cheap points at the end of the quarter.
Let me share a crazy statistic.
Against the Cavs, Mcconnell had a triple double with steals. Dude had 10 steals, to go along with 13 assists and 16 points on 8 for 8 shooting. Talk about a great night.
But that 10 steal triple double is something that only 5 other players have done in NBA history.
And his game is more than just forcing turnovers.
With 6.5 assists per game not only is T.J. by far the number 1 player when it comes to passing the ball, but he’s actually ranked 17th at the moment in the entire league, in front of high profile point guards like Steph Curry, John Wall, Kyrie Irving, Lonzo Ball, Mike Conley, the list goes on and on.
Check this out: A week ago against the Miami Heat he went 8 for 9 from the field which is great, but then also racked up 15 assists. All that in just 29 minutes as a reserve, off the bench.
Players know that he’ll always find them as he’s so unselfish, so Mcconnell is loved by his teammates here in Indiana just as much as he was in his time with the Sixers.
At the end let me just showcase a part of his game that’s kinda funny to me.
T.J. is shooting 55% from the field which is amazing, especially for a smaller guy like him, but the most interesting thing is, he’s not really a shooter like that.
The reason for his efficiency is that he is smart about picking and choosing his opportunities but this is what gets me every time. His signature play.
Mcconnell absolutely loves to weave his way all the way to the baseline on the right side and shoot a fadeaway from there.
Again, continuing with the theme of this video, I assume it’s pretty frustrating to watch a guy go to his spot, and shoot a fadeaway over a taller defender and watch the ball go in every single time.
Look I always say that I love high effort players, but T.J. Mcconnell is on a whole nother level. Plus he’s so unselfish, team oriented, and overall a great teammate. Extremely underrated.
And the fact that he’s able to do so much at that size, in a way makes us-the mere mortals who are watching the games at home live the NBA life through him.
I had a lot of fun making this video for a relatively unknown guy, so hopefully you enjoyed watching. That’s it for now, subscribe and talk to you in the next one. Peace out.

After the 10 steal game, I shared one of those highlight reels to someone, and the word I used was "obnoxious". Same idea. I like how many of the players had that "wtf" face on them, and sometimes even the director/cameraman weren't paying attention because it's so unexpected. He's always swiping it from the receiving player instead the passing one, which shows great anticipation. I kind of wish someone steals the ball from you before you can make that shot at the end.

I won't lie, this was me playing pick up in the hood. Never picked, had to shoot for teams or capt and I always made it so I picked, that's how I actually got to play. You said at the beginning that T.J. is slow and not athletic, that's simply not true. As a fan who watches his games, he's very quick, and was actually was ranked third in average speed when he was with the 76ers: www.nba.com/sixers/news/year-review-tj-mcconnell I would say he's very athletic in his own way, possessing a quickness a lot of players can't keep up with.
@HeatCheck
@HeatCheck 3 жыл бұрын
"in his own way" means he's not really athletic lol. also average speed just means that he runs a lot, and doesn't sit in place. that's average- a function of the quickest a player goes vs the slowest (walking around on the court-which again, he doesnt do) All in all tho- I think we're on the same side here. Praising his effort and style of play.
@slobba586
@slobba586 3 жыл бұрын
How does saying he's athletic "In his own way", equate to me saying he's not athletic. Nba players possess abilities unique to themselves. Some players have freakish wingspans, or huge hands, and some are just tall. For instance: Kawhi Leonards 7'3 wingspan vs Lebron's 6'8 250 pound incredible frame. T.J. possesses good speed and incredible conditioning. I don't need you to explain average speed to me, and your explanation further proves my point. You try running at the speed T.J does for the minutes he does successfully. You can't. T.J. is sprinting since the moment he enters the court, to find steals, passes. and go around screens. It takes speed and athleticism to do what he does daily. I agree with you that it takes effort to do what he does, but make no mistake, he is not a Jokic or Doncic type slow-moving player. As a Pacer fan who watches his games, he relies as much on his speed as his instincts. Even for his draft combine Agility stats, in the running sections, (Lane Agility Time, Shuttle Run, Three Quarter Sprint), he consistently ranked middle of the pack, which is impressive given he's going against Nba Competition: www.nba.com/stats/draft/combine-strength-agility/?sort=MODIFIED_LANE_AGILITY_TIME&dir=-1&SeasonYear=2015-16 So while I think your analysis about effort is spot on, the slow and unathletic guy with IQ narrative is a bit old and ill-informed for T.J. in my opinion.

He was top 10-15 in assists per game and top 3 in steals per game in January. In fantasy basketball that's securing 2 out of the 9 stats. Got him and currently number 1 in my league. lmao

I was at a Summer league game right after TJ went undrafted. Sat right next to a Sixers fan and told him TJ would be a legit nba rotation player, he didn't agree. All you had to do was watch a few Zona games and you could see TJ has the heart to play at the highest level.

finally some attention and credit this amazing player deserves. I've been a big fan of him since his first season: team first & basketball IQ over athleticism

It’s funny how people think being able to anticipate plays, spacial awareness and eye-hand coordination, isn’t ‘athletic’

TJ is NOT slow. He is relentless and quick when he needs to be. I think the downside to this is breathing heavy from hustling so hard can fuck with your shot. That has gotten in his head a bit I think and why he looks for the pass after a steal rather than making the shot.

If the Clippers don't trade for Lonzo, Lowry or Hill they should really go after TJ. He'd fit in perfectly alongside Kawhi & PG in LA.

I’m confused on the “he’s not athletic” thing bruh, I’m watching him and he’s as fast and as quick as everyone else on the court. I know he’s not jumping out the gym but he also takes a lot of mid range jump shots and barely gets his shot blocked. I get your point but if he didn’t have any physical talent, the IQ wouldn’t be worth shit.

TJ is what the 1950s wanted in a PG This means he will do well now, because it’s unpredictable and more team work inducing type of structure. My coach used to have us PGs run at their opponent just like TJ does, gotta do it when they turn their back. Basketball is like a huge game of magic and whoever creates the most moves from thin air will win the game. TJ is one of the rarest types of players and I’m glad to be able to see his career unfold!

He is basically a 2k14 player or something where you could reach for a steal and not get a foul. I used to do this in 2k all the time, watch the passing lanes, draw doubles force the pass and then interecpt and run straight down. If I ever met the dude I would've asked him if he got this mindset from 2k. Great player to watch.
