This Technique isn't talked much about and is in my opinion the most important thing to implement into your playing if you want to replicate that Guitar Style.

John's attack and his sense of groove is what sets him apart.

Basically singing on a guitar, more wide range and subtle things to make. Face+sing+pro guitar player(nerd)+rockstar hype+all in pop music early days(lots of risk).

2:14 Digging it! Danke! Ey, Ich will auch auf der Bühne Stehen so geil spielen wie John und den Leuten hammer Vibes bringen!^^ He's muting the rest of the Strings as good as he can, while making the single notes ring? Thats what he does in the Song Belief too. And Like a Rolling Stone life. String Guage 10? How thick it your Pick? 5:31 Love the Heavy attack. I kinda do it naturally, because I am lerning so many Mayer Songs, and Its almost imposible to it in an other way. Sure it is technique....but it is more Feeling and fun....very physical!

Yep true! It’s really essential, the attitude does a lot! I use skinny top heavy bottom strings. 1.14mm Ernie Ball Picks

Focus on just hitting the String you want to ring out and mute the other Strings for that Hard Attack...Depends on which String of course...High E String--> Mute all strings before that, G String --> Try to only hit the G String but mute the B and E String with the Index Finger (Left Hand) Keep trying! You will get there!

I realised as soon as you showed those little clips what you were going to say re the right hand technique he uses. It's such an odd thing really as I was thinking that it's probably not something a guitar teacher like Tomo would ever teach, as normally we might be taught really clean and accurate picking technique, such as if you were learning from a studio session guitarist perhaps he would always teach to clean pick for as perfect a sound as possible to record etc. But it's as you said with a young John probably copying SRV's aggressive almost percussive use of hitting the strings and lots of them at once. Its almost a bad technique really but leads to his pretty unique sound so in that respect it show's playing in your own style (even if self taught) can never really be wrong. The true X factor is in sounding very unique and that's a bloody hard thing to achieve on an instrument where millions of people try to but fail. When you listen to any world renown artist you instantly know it's them (same with vocals) and that's really amazing I think. Great little video Ben
