Great review! Thanks.Since I already own a A61 by NI, I will prefer the Keylab. The problem with NI is that all the USB stuff is totally enclosed within their ecosystem so it's impossible to remap all midi controls, in and out, like I do using Python. That said, I love NI for lots of things, in my case, the fact that it's almost fully accessible to the blind through accessibility output. Almost NO pro audio gear is concerned by that extremely important issue. I would love reviweres to talk about that issue at times. It can help raise awareness. We're about 9000 blind DAW, pro audio users on a single forum. It's a big market of completely forgotten people.

I'm glad I came across your comment. I am visually impaired and have been looking for a new MIDI controller. I have the Keylab MK1 and I got it because it was cheap. But I really hate the keybed, and I have to use a magnifying glass that I have to use when I want to read anything on it, which really inhibits my workflow. The fact that you made this comment saying that the NI has accessibility options, really hit home for me. I'll likely get one now that I know that. Thanks brother, and God bless!

@@agentooe33AD Hi! In fact, my post is one year old and since then, there were great news for accessible music production. Since about a month, all Arturia V Collection 9.2 is fully accessible through text to speech. That and Analog Lab. I really prefer their synths. The good news if you don't like Arturia keybeds is that any CC message can be assigned to presets, types and favorites/collection etc.. So, if you prefer another controller, you can enjoy the amazing V Collection 9 with text to speech for all presets, parameters setup etc.. And if you use Reaper (which is, no doubt, the most accessible daw ever with OSARA script), you can access all your vst parameters. I love NI accessibility, straight on the controller, with touch sensitive encoders that output the parameter, the value and all parameter pages are accessible. You're visually impaired so not fully blind, NI software is not fully accessible yet but when everything is installed, the controller will talk to you by pressing shift and the sixth control key at the top of all their A series controller. The good thing is the voice output can be directed to another audio port so the text to speech can only be heard in headphones if you play live. Same for Arturia. Good to know that great vst's like OZONE are fully accessible using tab and arrows, same thing for pianoteq and a couple of other plugins. English isn't my birth language, I hope it's clear enough. :) Reach the Reapers without peepers forum if you need some help on Reaper's accessibility and other info for visually impaired musicians. I'm working on an accessibility plugin for Ableton Live since I still love it for ideas. Note: I don't know the KL Mk1 but I must say that I love the keybed of the Mk2 for orchestral vst's. The feel is great. I use my Korg D1 for piano playing though.

I actually spent a while debating which keyboard to get and John Mike was the tipping point. I ended up getting an Arturia Keylab 88 MKII and I love it. The thing is a sturdy beast and the keybed is just so responsive and luxurious in my opinion. I find it nearly effortless to get just the right velocities on my key presses with even a default curve. The three pedals I map to Synth controls so I can do on the fly automation. I was afraid spending so much I was going to regret it, but damn if I don't love the thing more than my car. XD Thank you sir, your videos are much loved!

For those wondering about the keybed: it's a Fatar TP/100LR in both of them. The Studiologic SL88 studio has the same keybed for half the price, if the keybed itself is all you're after. The TP/100LR is a fairly heavy action... Studiologic also has the SL88 grand for ~1k which has a much better action (TP/40WOOD). (this action is lighter and feels far more accurate than the TP/100LR) If you think you want a KK-S88, I would advise you to head to a local shop and bring your laptop so you can hook it up and play with it. I personally found that stupid touch strip in front of the pitch/mod to be a nuisance. It's too easy to bump it and mess up whatever you have it set to when you're reaching for pitch/mod (look at your hand when you go for pitch/mod... do you anchor your hand using your palm/thumb? If so, you're gonna hit that touch strip.)

Hi John Mike, I finally got in the KK S88 that I pre-ordered in early March! It was a long wait, but well worth it. Unfortunately, I've been learning piano on an MPK 49, so I have to toughen up my fingers a little 🤫, but the expressiveness is wonderful. Starting out at 60, I have enough saved up to get what I want, so I got a Hidrau 26" piano bench which is awesome, Komplete 13 Ultimate, and I just ordered Keyscape and Trilian, as well as the Pigments and Dia synths. I rounded it out with the Fabfilter essentials and Soundtoys bundles. It will take me the rest of my life to learn this stuff, but the journey will be awesome. Thanks so much to you for your entertaining reviews and your positive energy!

I currently own 2 MK2 88s, and one Mk2 61. I purchased a Novation SL 61 MK3 first in 2020 ( which I still love), but since Novation doesn't offer a hammer action 88, I purchased my first Keylab MK2 88 after a ton of research. After feeling the quality of the instrument and the perfect control it offered, I am now an Artuia convert. ( I use 3 different laptops for playing live - all running Ableton 11- plus several sound modules (Kyra, Blofeld, Wavestate)). The Keylab Mk2s are some of the nicest, most functional controllers you can purchase.

I've got the Native Instruments Komplete Kontrol S61 MkII keyboard and then decided that I needed to get an 88 key midi controller for the range and also to teach myself to play piano. I already know music theory and how to read, etc., from my time spent as a kid in my high school's symphonic, Jazz and marching bands playing trombone. I researched all the different 88 key controllers out there across various sites and not just relying on one review to make up my mind. Due to reputation, ruggedness / durability I decided to go with the Roland A-88 MKII controller. I've got my S61 going into the Roland A-88 with midi cable and then tied into my computer via USB. The Roland is the one that I highly recommend. However, at the end of the day it does come down to personal preference, etc. I do know that I definitely won't be spending any of my money on the Studiologic gear due to it's reviewer's giving it poor ratings for almost non-existent customer service. You can't go wrong with the Arturia or the Native Instruments 88 key mid-controllers if that's your choice but of the three I just mentioned it was Roland that get's my vote due to it's size. It will be an integral part of my music composition / writing setup in my studio.

I have all the NI software as well. We have different goals, so it totally makes sense that the NI works for you. I like the controls on the Arturia, it works great with hardware synths. The other thingI like is Arturia's Analog Lab V. I used Komplete Kontrol as well, but Analog Lab's patch library works better for my workflow. AL only works with Arturia products, which is a blessing and a curse. It works out of the box with the Arturia controller. Their VSTs are great, but so are Native Instruments. To me, Massive X and Pigments both offer great modern patches. Arturia's arsenal of classic synths is insane. The Arp2600 V sounds just like the real thing. My vote goes to Arturia, but I understand your choice. The use case is what is important.

Both are for sure good keyboards. I am more on the Arturia side since I own a couple of their smaller controllers (a minilab 25 and an essentials 49) and the keyboards are fantastic with very decent keybeds for their price especially on the minilab. I think as a whole the Arturia keyboards are more versatile unless you are or you want to get into the NI ecosystem. Regarding the S88 I generally like minimalistic designs and I can see that not having the pads creates less clutter if you don't finger drum or you have another controller for it (although they can also be programmed as buttons which is handy) but a keyboard like this should at least have a second row of sliders or at least knobs, it makes your flow much easier.

Those Native Instruments have a serious problem. It's like buying a computer keyboard that only works properly when used with Microsoft Office. Have you noticed that they fail to work at the minimum expectancy for external midi applications (which is THE JOB of a midi controller)? I bought the Komplete Kontrol S88 and I feel truly defrauded with it. Pitch and mod wheels are always on channel 1, you simply CANNOT change that. That alone is the worst thing for a midi controller. Pedals can be set to a desired channel, but only from the software (Komplete Kontrol) and cannot be stored in templates, so you are pretty much screwed if you want to work with an external midi sound module like a Roland Integra 7. Also, if you want to use a midi cable, you have to disconnect the USB cable and you are then stuck on channel 1 and all knobs and buttons are disabled! Really, worst midi controllers ever. It's a shame, because they feel nice to play.

Both are good for studio setting using DAW. But for live gigs surely the most minimalistic surface is the Roland a88mk2? I had so many midi controllers over the years. But I think I have finally sorted out the winning combination. For live gigs: Roland a88 mk2 with nord stage3 compact on top tier. For studio: get arturia with a cheaper NI komplete m32 mini keyboard for NI eco system,on top and a Novation SL 61 mk3 by its side for ableton integration. It is the best of all worlds. The komplete m32 is cheap as chips and actually has all the surface control of the s88. Half the time I had an s88 I never looked at the led screens. And those key lights that show the lower region macro features actually also light up on the novation sl 61 too. So arturia £800, m32 £90, novation sl61 £550, Roland a88mk2 £700, nord stage3 compact £ 2500. And if you really want the best piano feel keybed a Kawai mp11se but no after touch.

I took the Komplete Kontrol home and it instantly felt and looked like a toy. Now I already have a Metal Kurzweil which I love, but even my outdated long abandoned by AVID Axiom Pro 61 felt much more professional. Other reviewers say the Arturia has the superior software. it depends on your style of music really. Contact seems very intune to Electronic music and people that use samples and arpeggiators that have no real knowledge of Music theory and still call themselves artists and song writers. Hence the Shiny Disco ball attraction lol But I bet I know which software has the more organic sounding piano lol There are plenty of reviews that say over a year the thing is falling apart and malfunctioning, no surprise there. I played Casios with better integrity. Anyway needless to say I returned the Komplete and am awaiting the Arturia. Really stoked. Its a matter of classy and long lasting relationship vs the cheap thrill hooker lol. That said, great honest review, as there are many this is the only one I seen with both 88 key versions. I also like that teh Arturia is more compact in girth and width despite being heavier. For a log lasting Studio keyboard there's only one choice, for gigging quite the other. To be honest I wanted both but the Komplete is way overpriced for what youre getting. Seems like they are more Koncerned with getting people hooked to their software and brand than anything else. The Arturia however plays well with all DAWs. You knwo theres a whole entire unit with even more lights that goes with it to give you the Actual Komplete Kontrol, and thats over priced too and still no Sliders. How can you not have sliders? So even the name is deceiving. I also have an elaborate Control Surface configuration, the AVID Artist series to be precise. However this 88 keyboard will be on my keyboard stand not console since its such a beast, but even with my Axiom Pro61 sitting on my sliding platform, Id rather not have to reach over it to my control surfaces for such simple often used parameters like Volume when I can have it right there at my fingertips. I still dont know why this Keyboard is so popular. The screens fade after a year and it just malfunctions all around from heavy usage. There are more than enough substantial reviews to confirm this. Toital Game changer, or as one KZfaqr said, if it breaks down thats not good lol Again no surprise by the feel of it. I should also add I only tested the S61 and knwo the 88 key versions are the better for both units. As far as the Arturia I know those are the only ones with fatar keys, dont know about the S61. Sure didnt feel like it though they were easy and smooth to play

Have you tried to use your Arturia with something like an external sound module? Or with any plugin configured to use different sounds on different midi channels? I'm hoping someone that has one can tell me if it works properly so I buy one. Let me explain: I'm extremely dissapointed with the Komplete Kontrol S88 because it SUCKS as a midi controller. The mod and pitch wheels are ALWAYS on channel 1, you cannot change that. And the pedals can be set to a desired channel, but you have to choose a channel and leave it there! This means that, if you configure the keyboard to change between channel 1 and 2 (or other channels), only the keyboard switches channel but your pitch/mod wheels and your pedals don't change channel with the keyboard, which makes it the worst controller ever. Same thing happens if you split your keyboard to play one channel on the left half and another channel on the right half: your pedals won't send signal to both channels, only one, and your pitch/mod wheels will stay always on channel 1. Also, you cannot use the midi cable unless you disconnect the USB cable, and, in that case, you are stuck on channel 1 and all buttons and knobs are disabled! I hope you can let me know if all of this works properly on your Arturia. Thanks!

The NI S88 looks great on paper and has a ton of great reviews from people who've just got the unit but I've also read a number of forum posts etc. where people received faulty units and not just once but one after the other. The LED lights seem to be a point of failure with some not working or being very dim. There were also a bunch of posts where people said their S88 developed a real 'clack' sound in some of the keys within the first few months of use and the only remedy was to strip down the keybed and use a special grease to lessen the noise. Also some people cited one or both of the screens were faulty or became faulty soon after purchase. The long and short was that I became quickly skeptical of whether NI could ship a reliable unit. Their QC was clearly very poor.

It is the acoustics of the weighted keys retracting and slamming up every time you press a key. This can be combatted the same ways that custom PC keyboard builders combat key noise. FOAM, felt, but you have to be daring to experiment on something this expensive lol

I am interested in kontakt but I’m confused since I’m not a keyboardist . Can’t you use kontakt with any keyboard anyways? I’m not sure what benefit other than having some of the forward pre mapped is the benefit? If I’m not that concerned with pre mapped software I can simply jus they any other keyboard right? I used the free native instruments with a cheap 88 m audio a while back and I didn’t feel I needed any extra integration . But I also am not experienced so I’m not sure what I’m missing. Any help?

I probably would choose the all in one option of the arturia seeing I could play and have so much control plus the sounds. I could see usually that iPad stand and a laptop or monitor. Having the S88 MK1 and contemplating on upgrading to either MK2 or the Keylab. This review is actually really helpful, convincing me not to go the Keylab route. The conclusion is actually I will stay with the MK1. Although I am missing the cool displays, I do have my iPad used as secondary monitor with Ableton mounted on a note stand, more or less extending the keyboard with a kickass display beating the sht out of the MK2 displays. :D So, in total, not much of an upgrade for me.

Totally agree! S88 all the way! Guessing if Novation releases a weighted 88 key SL 88 MK3, that would be the way to go ;) NI all the way for the fact it has LCD readouts for your controller knobs and buttons. Ridiculous that this isn't the standard in 2021. These companies need to step up their game. NI and Novation way ahead of the competition IMHO.

I really like my 49SL MK 3. I too would love to see a hammer action 88SL MkIII (or IV.) I went with the 49SL MKIII due to current space constraints, but after I move around the end of the year, I'll be in the market for 88 hammer action keys. Seeing as Novation did recently launch the LK88 MKIII (with synth keys) one can only hope this is in the pipeline. At the time I passed on the S49 MKII because I had use for the faders and pads and sequencer on the SL. Now I have a Launchpad Pro MKIII and some motor faders, perhaps the S88 makes more sense as I have Komplete.

Since I already have the Arturia Keylab 61 mk2 choosing Arturia’s Keylab 88 is a no brainer for me. Before I got the Arturia board I spent a lot of time checking out your channel and others to see if I should get the one I have now or the Komplete S61. I chose Arturia mainly because I like the drum pads and more flexibility for control even though I rarely if ever use the faders. I actually preferred the keybed on the S61 but didn’t need to be that connected to the Native Instruments ecosystem. Besides, I saw many reports of the color screen on the Komplete washing out after awhile so I decided that I could still have the best of both worlds with Arturia, which still has a pretty solid keybed. I’m getting Kontakt 6 when Black Friday comes around and plan to use a number of Native Instruments plug ins in addition to the third party ones I have. Great review!!

I think Komplete Select is currently 50% off. If you buy that now and they also make the upgrade to the Standard version 50% off later this summer, the total money spent would be less than Kontakt 6 alone. Kontakt 6 is included in Standard along with a bunch of other stuff.
