I've seen saffron sold in spice bottles at around $12 CAN, which is understandable given the crocus' limited growth time in early spring. It's truly a rare seasoning!

There's legit saffron in the stores too. But you're talking $10-25 for just a few threads in a glass jar, usually 1-3 grams. Costco sells 14 grams for $80, which comes out to $5,714 a kilogram.

Gotta factor in junk like manual labor, packaging, shipping/export costs etc. The closer you are to a product the cheaper it'll usually be anyway because you can cut down on that stuff or are in a climate where you can just grow it urself.

A really cool trick I learned from my Persian friends is, after you make the rice (without saffron) you take 1/4 of the rice and add saffron to it. Then you mix it in with the remainder of the plain rice. It makes the presentation beautiful. The plain rice is flecked with beautiful golden rice. It tastes, smells and looks delicious. Always cook up Saffron with water. Fats play against bringing out the richest colors.

Same as taking corn or pumpkins from a farmer. but i think saffron crocus only come with 2 strands per flower so maybe a little more messed up. However if you asked and showed an interest he'd probably give you the one. That's just because hes a hardworking individual not a thief.

Jacob Bla, True the USA shouldn't have meddled in the Middle East. No western country should have, now it's so fucked that the people can't even take care of the problems themselves and now we HAVE to go and fix the mess. Very troubling.

I imagine the farmers make enough for the year for that one week of work, but that years worth of income is probably less than a dollar a day or something. We in the West take a lot of this type of luxury for granted

The farmers don't just work for 1 week. These farms usually grow other crops besides saffron. The farmers don't own the farms, they don't have any shares, they get a monthly salary.
