As an English football fan, this reminds me a lot of the end of Arsene Wenger's reign at Arsenal - one person who controls everything but has massive blindspots and maybe hasn't adapted to the way the modern game operates. The man in charge is such an institutional figure that it seems wrong to fire them, and they've got too much pride to quit while they're not too far behind.

But I guess the one key difference between Wenger's final days and Belichick's present situation is that Wenger was really hamstrung by lack of money available to him, as IIRC a lot of Arsenal's income was allocated to building a new stadium, so Wenger couldn't compete in the market for players that he liked. Meanwhile, Belichick has control over roster building, and it still hasn't worked out very well for him

Definitely surprising, but not that much because the personnel aren't really better. The offense is basically the same aside from downgrading from Jakobi to Juju, and now the OL is way worse and Mac is also mentally rattled because of it. The one thing I expected from BoB was to use the 3 TEs a lot but they aren't really seeing significant usage for an offense with such a poor group of WRs. Problem is that no one on the offense can beat man coverage(Henry, Bourne, and Parker are all bottom 15 in WR separation on NextGenStats. Parker is 2nd to last). His OL is 32nd in pass-blocking and supporting a bottom 5 run game in yds/attempt. One hugely overlooked aspect to these offensive failures is loss of coaches. Since 2017 they have lost coaches at such a high rate that they have not had time to replace and develop people in those positions, which is easier than hiring from outside, especially in Belichick's past. This is why Patricia ended up as OC and OL coach in the first place. When McDaniels left for Vegas, he took OL coach Carmen Bricillo, assistant Bo Hardegree, and WR coach Mick Lombardi. The QB coach Jedd Fish left for a job at University of Arizona a year prior. When Flores left, he took WR coach Chad Oshea and DB's coach Josh Boyer with him. Dante Scarnecchia and Ivan Fears, long time OL and RB coaches both retired, as did Bill's right hand man Ernie Adams. Daboll was there for half a decade before Bama/Buffalo/NYG. They also lost Ossenfort/Caserio/Ziegler in the front office. Sorry for such a long-winded explanation lol. There's more to it than this even, which shows how hard it is to win.

The problem with rebuilding is most teams start way too late. The pats should’ve gone full build after Brady left. Brady left BECAUSE they had no talent left. He also saw the bills and dolphins becoming a bigger threat. He saw the writing on the wall. That team needed a rebuild. He also saw a certain team that had already rebuilt and was in a weaker devision. Bill was being stubborn. He thought he could win without Brady. And he’s not wrong. He could. If he had a good team. He thought all he needed was a few pieces. The broncos made the same mistake. They’re both in the same boat now.

What has Bill done though, as a head coach in his career without Brady at center? He's got a losing record, he's only won a single playoff game, 29 years ago, after this season he'll have missed the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years. Once Brady left, his time should have come to an end in New England.

What I got from it is that Mac Jones doesn't trust Vederian Lowe at all. He threw the Jets ball off his back foot because he didn't want to take a hit from Lowe's rusher. When he saw Parsons get washed down by Lowe he scrambled to the vacated edge, even though there was no one open on that side. Calvin Anderson might be the best option on the roster but he needs to get healthy

I think you mostly nailed it. They shouldn't be this bad but everything being bad simultaneously is making everything worse. I would add that the run game is non-existent, so that adds to Mac's issues because it's all on him to move the offense. I also want to say up top that I would keep Belichick because he has tried to adapt somewhat to the modern NFL. His 2022 draft and offseason showed he wanted to transition to a Shanahan style system, but it just didn't work because Patricia. With a real OC, who Belichick got after immediately realizing his mistake, they could try something like that again. He always knows where his roster weaknesses are and will address them this offseason if they give him a chance. They just had a lot to address this past offseason and didn't want to overpay guys like McGlinchey or draft a tackle in a weak class. I think each section was pretty accurate but, since this is my favorite team, I'll just add a few things: Supporting cast - the offensive line has no communication because they're constantly shuffling guys due to injuries. They have had five O-line combinations in five weeks. Plus, Atonio Mafi and Sidy Sow, two day 3 rookies, have had to start. That is not going to be functional. David Andrews and Trent Brown have been good, but that's not enough. As for the pass catchers, like you said, Bourne is good when he's not asked to be the WR1. Douglas has been getting open but doesn't get many snaps (for some reason). Juju and Parker can't separate, but Parker has always been their jump ball guy. Unfortunately he isn't winning those this season so it isn't helping. Maybe Thornton and Boutte can inject some life into the receiving core but I doubt it. I think you're underrating Henry a bit, because he's been very reliable this season, and Gesicki has been getting open but they're not targeting him. Overall, I think the pass catching group is a similar caliber as 2021, though, so it shouldn't be this bad. Mac - I feel so bad for Mac. He showed so much promise in his rookie season with a similar receiving core. But he isn't stepping into his throws anymore because he's afraid of getting hit and, like you said, he isn't talented enough to make up for the lack of receiving and O-line talent. He has lost what made him good, which is accurate, on time throws. And that's sad because he showed a lot of ability to do that in his rookie season. His mobility is not as bad as people say, but it's obviously not great and not enough to make up for missing so many throws. His turnover luck is genuinely shitty, because 50% of his turnovers becoming defensive scores is literally just bad luck, but he can't have that many turnovers in the first place. He is a bottom 5 QB right now, which is not where I thought he'd be, and I wouldn't blame them if they drafted a rookie QB in a strong class and made him be the backup from now on. Coaching staff - Adrian Klemm, the new O-line coach, is one of my top 3 biggest disappointments this season (the others are Onwenu and Mondre). I figured anything would be an upgrade over Patricia as the O-line coach, and it might be because he's new and dealing with so many personnel changes, but he doesn't seem to be doing much. Bill O-Brien seems to be fine because there are opportunities, but he needs to get the run game going because asking Mac to shoulder the entire offensive workload is not going to work. Belichick is still the GOAT HC to me because any other coach dealing with missing their top 3-4 CBs would look way worse. They held the Cowboys and Dolphins offenses to 24 points in that situation. No one else can do that. I think Belichick is trying to build a team the way they did with Tom Brady and hoping Mac can develop. It hasn't worked unfortunately, and it has cost them. I don't think the narrative that Mac and the Patriots don't trust each other is true, though. He has stood behind Mac the entire way, and if they do draft a rookie QB I would want him as the HC to give that person a great situation. It's a lot, like you said. Hopefully they can get some guys like Courtland Sutton and/or La'el Collins to improve but they should probably just rebuild entirely.

Respect to this reasonable non over the top post. Also will The patriots have chance to right alot of these wrongs not only in this season but also in the offseason due to cap space, and draft capital. Even if its the same group as 2021 for the most part, I think its 'bad' just because regression being a thing along with the other injuries that help make the run/pass offense work. And many of the bonehead decisions Mac has been making I feel is off trust. He can't be expected the carry the offense consistently without better athletes around him and that was the case with his years in Bama. If Bill wants a QB who is going to be 'above and beyond', then that guy isn't sitting at 15th in the 2021 draft class. Arguably that QB wasn't in pick 2-3 either so that is comforting.

Sure there was a scenario where the O-line held steady and Thornton wasn't as banged up which could help the Pats only to a measly 5-5 record before week 10 with how much difficult their schedule is this year. But I didn't see them trying to threaten the playoffs this season unless other favorable factors came up for the AFC East.

THANK YOU BRETT. New England Media is a horror show and the fan base on the whole has been the "Pancakes and Waffles" tweet when it comes to blame. I've been on Bill's needed to go since 2019, when it came out he was going to trade Gronk to the Lions if not for Brady and Kraft stepping in. Bill just has not adapted to the modern NFL in any meaningful way, which includes defense because any QB that can move he can't figure out. It's just time for the big red button in NEW and I hope it happens ASAP

LMAO Bill hasn't adapted to the modern NFL with defense? His multi-safety approach along with the payoff for what Dugger turned out to be has done pretty well with the metrics to show for. Thing is you can't just sit on defense in this modern NFL like in past decades. The offense has to be able to score efficiently and take the match ups. Otherwise BB is constantly handing early pass scripts to Mac Jones/BoB (the OC) to try get the team back out of a deficit by half time!
@themace2055
@themace2055 7 ай бұрын
@@t4d0W I’m glad his multi safety approach has been great but all Dugger does now is sit back as a free safety in a contract year when he’s best suited to be a TE Eraser/ LoS monster. So because there was no plan whatsoever to replace McCourty another young player is having their earning potential sewered by Bill. Failure to adapt to the modern game applies to 2019 when the defense faced any sort of QB that could move and it did nothing. That didn’t change in 2020, 2021, 2022, and now 2023. The team on the whole lacks the speed to make plays on offense and defense, and while Bill, Steve Belichick, and Jerod Mayo can draw up great scheme, it just doesn’t matter if it’s Dugger and a bunch of 4.7 40’s out there. I know Gonzales and Judon got hurt but the team’s flaws run deep. So yeah, he can adapt as a defensive coach somewhat to modern scheme and still pull out stuff that can confuse mediocre and below QB’s, but he has not adapted to the personnel requirements great teams have to have in the modern game to be successful. None of this is excusing the poor play of players with expectations of course, just the reality of the situation that the entire roster is poor overall, and it’s poorly coached on the offensive side of the ball to an extreme degree. The team needs a reset in the worst way

Great job breaking down the O-line play. I would love a deeper dive on the offensive coaching/play calling. I often feel like its a big part of the problem when teams sputter this hard. If the offense is poorly coached, and poorly drafted/managed, then change does need to start from the top down. I think Belichek is used to getting players cheap because they were willing to play for less on a Superbowl contender team. Now he’s just being stubborn and cheap and its hurting the team.

My eyes tell me he backs up into the way, opens his hips flat to the line and try to use only arm strength. All the passes even in a winning game are slow and late so the recievers have to stop or slow allowing the corners to catch up. I rarely see him drive the ball so it gets to the reciever in step and leading them. I dont know if Parker or borne or hunter are slow or bad, I think the ball place and timing are so bad they can't run at full speed

I am not convinced if you trade Purdy for Mac Jones the situation changes in big way for either organisation. and maybe Belichick needs to learn that a normal QB neeeds a bit more assets than the GOAT and he needs to build an elite defense with less capspace than he is used to. The bad Special teams also tell a really bad story about the overall quality of the roster.

Realistically that's probably in the team's best interest. They ruined whatever Mac Jones could have been, and need to restart the offense at all positions save TE and RB. Their QB is bad, the offensive line is a dumpster fire, they can't open holes in the run game and can't protect for even a second and a half in the pass game. The receiver group for New England might be the worst in the league. They are all guys who should be WR3 or less on a competent roster and can't get separation. The best thing for the Pats is probably what you said. They need to bottom out and hit on a high 1st round QB, either hit on a tackle in the draft or get one in free agency, and they desperately need speed and playmaking at the WR position. This will have to be a multiple year rebuild.

Bengals were absolutely bunglin' until they got Burrow and managed to get Higgins. Then Chase landed to them the year after. Jags def look different with an offense ran by Trevor Lawrence. Hell CJ Stroud is also giving the Texans offense a new look with headroom to be better. Hell its hard to catchup to the playoffs in the AFC East when they have Josh Alien and Tua and the Turbo Fins.

Ayo I kinda have a bit of a vision for what the pats should do. 1. I think it’s time they move in from belichick he’s just lost his magic with the team and also fire the O line coach too. they should also ship Mac Jones off to another team, he just hasn’t been looking good anymore these past few seasons. They should get a New Head Coach, New General Manager, and get a new QB in the offseason 2. If they end up getting a high draft pick or 1st overall, they should get Caleb Williams as their new QB. I know they won’t automatically be a one year turn around but they can work well with him overtime orthey can sign a QB in free agency in the offseason but idk if that will happen. 4. The pats need to use the remaining of their cap space to get some Star talent in their roster and also get an actual GM since they haven’t really done anything in free agency. To rebuild and give the offense some new weapons, they need to sign either some good WRs who will become free agents next year like Mike Evans or OBJ, etc. they should also try and focus on getting the O line back together and having everyone play healthy while having a new O line coach too. It might take a few years to get everything back together but that’s kinda what I think they should do and If belichick refuses to give up his GM duties then we just have to let him go.

On one hand, Belichick seems to be really struggling after losing Brady, implying it was Brady that was the real driving force. On the other hand, Wilson seems to be struggling without Carrol, implying it was Pete who was in the right. Just goes to show that sometimes its the coach, sometimes its the QB. And in the case of Jones and Belichick, sometimes its both.

I mean Brady was the offense for the Pats despite how 'low' the quality of talent on the offense got. 2019 was the lowest bar for him and I can see why Brady would want to leave to a more stacked roster. As for Wilson he's getting older, he's getting slower and he really pass at the middle of the field. Carroll knew his value but the Broncos thought he's worth 296 million for 7 years (along with a bunch of draft picks no less). To credit Caroll he had a great rebound with those picks to help replenish the talent drain but also had a veteran QB who makes sense with the stuff his modern play caller in Waldron (from McVay's group) could run.

The man literally has exactly 2 winning seasons in 27 years of coaching where Tom Brady wasn't the starter. I'm not kidding go look it up, 9 seasons without Brady and only 2 winning records without him. It's not that the game passed the man by or that he has too much control as GM it's that Brady had enough talent to carry the offense and that allowed Bill just to focus on the defense which he really is pretty good at. But as a head coach he has never proven that he could win without a generational talent like Brady at QB.

@@peteyprimo7173 that was a typo. It's fixed. It was supposed to read 9 seasons without him and 2 winning records without him. Pretty likely to be 2 out of 10 after this year.

You nailed it right on the head. This is 100% about trust. I don’t think Mac trusts his offensive line. I don’t think the offensive line trusts each other. I don’t think the WR room is confident enough in receiving a catchable ball. And ultimately the coaching staff and the players do not trust each other

From everything we've seen from Mac Jones, he's an asshole and a racist - and it's really hard to get a cohesive NFL team if the center piece of the offense is even only one of those things.

I'm going to tell you a secret. This season was a tank. I know it's hard to believe and it never ever happens in the NFL, but, in the spring of 2023 it was decided that Mayo would take over as head coach for 2024 and Bill was asked to get things set up. He did just that. Make sure the defense is fin and ready for action in 2024 and make sure the offense loses 13 games so that two important goals can be achieved. Get Mayo a bunch of high draft picks and get the team one of the weakest schedules in the NFL for 2024. Mission accomplished.

For more than 10 years, I've been told that all it takes for the Patriots and Belichick to win multiple Super Bowls is an average QB. Shockingly, it turns out that's very much not the case.

Tom Brady covered Bill's ass for years. That guy's a good coach, but a *terrible* GM, especially when it comes to offensive skill position players. Randy Moss was his only hit in a decade, and Tom still got them 6 super bowls.

Brandin Cooks was a hit too but Brady didn't begin believing in Brandin Cooks until the texans game in 2017. Belichick needs to understand that he will never find himself a quarterback like Brady again who can cook with average receivers. Belichick as the GM was never in question when Brady was still there. Hilarious how it is now.

Brady covered up Bill on offense for sure. Still, even now, Bill is a top defensive mind. He needs an OC who will throw something different at the board because O’Brien and Patricia both sucked.

As a Patriots fan, I'm putting most of this blame towards Bill O'Brien. You'd expect this offense to be better than last year considering the success O'Brien had with Jones in college, but it is far from that. Mac Jones found so much success in college and in his rookie year when he is right next to the center running RPO's and play actions, and he's done none of that. Almost every pass play the Patriots run is either some shotgun variation or a screen pass. I know that the receiving talent isn't anything special, but even in the Tom Brady era we didn't have crazy weapons from top to bottom other than Randy Moss, Gronk and Edelman to some extent. I think it's time for this team to hit the reset button on this team rather than try to compete with this horrible offense.

Start with the O line. A cigar store Indian has more mobility than Trent Brown. Mac Jones sucks. Constant poor decisions on his part has lead to numerous pick-6's. Don't discount Belichick's stubbornness. He's has never taken ownership of all the terrible draft choices and the loses of good players because he won't pay them what they're worth. Bob Kraft needs to thank BB for all past Championships, then show him the door.

Thank you for this video Brett. The patriots are a complete mess. I knew that the good times would not last forever, but holy hell this is a really low point to hit. As a pats fan, I think it’s time to clean house. I’ll always love Belichek, but it can not be ignored that in the last four years he has made some really bad blunders, both with personal and clock management. Every coach reaches a point where the league evolves past them. It took Belichek 35 years, but he is reaching the point where his style is outdated. I would say they need to tank, but their lack of roster talent means they don’t have a choice. Mac Jones cannot be the quarterback for much longer either way.

@@williamli6200 I have no idea how that is the conclusion you came to. Is it because I appreciate Belichek for coaching my favorite team to six Super Bowl wins? Also, saying “you got what you deserve” in terms of football is probably taking it a little far here.

Brett we really all want to know, WHAT and HOW did the Patriots ship sink this badly? Yes, We know Brady was the entire offense and basically the patriot way, but WHAT happened in the coaching and staffing department? How did that fail so badly. Was Bill's complete focus on how to continue to build a Dynasty made him forget to check up on the staff and keep that a well lubricated machine as it always has been? (minus not listening to his scouts of course for the many amazing players the pats could have gotten) but what happened Bill? This is on you.

As a Patriots fan, I knew this season was coming & I accepted it in the summer, its probably why this is all not that painful for me. The signs were there if you paid attention. Our only decent O lineman is Cole Strange, everyone else can go to hell respectfully. Our receivers and tight ends are slow and would’t start on atleast 25 teams in the NFL. Not only are they slow, Mac has a noodle arm + poor mechanics/decision making which makes things worse for everyone. The defense is good, just young & now hurt because the offense can’t keep them off the field. I never liked Mac, but believe me when I say this coaching staff broke him last year. Don’t be surprised when ya’ll see Will Grier and Malik Cunningham sharing snaps by week 12. We are truly in hell

to put it mildly for Mac Jones, is it that he is either not confident in the o-line or his own ability, or he panics at the first sign of trouble, or both, from what I am seeing, it is both. this is usually indicative of someone playing for a team that is playing badly, the longer it goes on for, the worse it gets, I have seen this all too often here in Australia with the AFL, where we have seen teams getting buried, but it takes a while before they dig themselves out of that problem, and a lot of it is self-inflicted as well.
