With the winter Nordkapp goal complete I continue my winter arctic adventure down the Coast of Norway in my self built campervan. I get to experience some of the amazing frozen coasts and gorgeous sunsets of winter Norway.
Unsure about what to do now on the trip I look at the possibilities of visiting Tromsø and the Lofoten islands. I get some amazing drone footage of the sea ice breaking up and gorgeous sunsets.
Once again I talk about how I like my BFgoodrich KO2 tyres but stressed the point that there is a limit to what non-studded tyres can do up here and show an example of it.
Towards the very end, I cross the border into Finland as I decide to look for some Northern Lights and potentially hike to the three-country cairn/border marker for where Sweden Norway and Finland all meet.

Just an advice, all-terrain tyres are not made for ice, trust me. And you will also have problems with the insurance companies if they see it in an accident here in Norway during winter. So if you are going to Scandinavia during winter, get some Nokian Hakkapeliitta 👍🏻
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
I had no issues for thousands of miles of roads I drove up there, they do have there 3PMSF rated so legal up there and won’t be an insurance issue. I know many who have used them up there, a few Nordic friends with larger vans as well. The being said I wouldn’t be up there during the transition period between autumn and winter or winter and spring ( which i why I was leaving ) , way to much ice around then, and definitely wouldn’t be there during that time without studs, way to must of a risk of slipping But this trip was February/March and I had no issues on the compact snow and crush ice roads, as that the tread doing the work, you could emergency stop the van on those roads no issue. The Nokian Hakkapeliitta is a great tyre, I did look into them on my first trip up there in the winter, and was open to swapping over if needed, but I never had any traction or stopping issues so I didn’t in the end.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures Жыл бұрын
I do appreciate the comment and the offer of Advice, get a few comments on the subject of tyres but also have Nordic friends who say it’s no problem with a KO2 use in the winter as long as you’re not there during the transition between seasons

This coming winter I don’t plan to be on the Norwegian coast as much were the temperatures are more mild. An ice is more of a risk. plan to be the interior of northern Norway, Sweden and Finland

Thank you very much. Yes some of the lay-by and car parks in Norway were very icy. Presumably they have been compacted snow like everywhere else and then with the recent temperature increase melted and then re-froze

Awesome drone footage of the 🇧🇻 fjords 😍 Alex you mentioned in your Vlog if you're not used to driving in snow conditions to get the feel and confidence take the flatter roads of Sweden/Finland have you taken the main routes E4/ E10 or E45 in Sweden? If so are they fairly flattish and toll roads to head North 😊
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much! Yeah I feel the roads in Sweden and Finland can be more forgiving to learn on. Sweden I took the E4 & E10, and Finland the E8. I’m sure given those countries terrain in those area there would be plenty other suitable roads

I hope you both enjoy the catch up on my videos! Drone wise I’ve been using a old DJI spark, I really wouldn’t recommended it. It gives me so many technical issues while flying with connections that I’m surprised sometimes I can get usable footage

Winter tires, without studs here in Scandinavia are different from main Europe. They are more suited for conditions like you are driving on now.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes I definitely wouldn’t be in Northern Scandinavia between autumn to winter and winter to spring without studs, to much ice. However I personally found in February I found the few thousand mile I did perfectly fine as the roads were mostly compact snow and crushed ice. Towards the end of the trip when the conditions were getting to around zero and there was a lot more thaw and refreezing ice it was time to leave as I didn’t have stud.
@protestagain
@protestagain 2 жыл бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures As I said, there are two types of winter tires without studs, those for main Europa and those for the Scandinavian market. They are much better than your tires in these conditions, but if you are depending on your car in the North, you need stud tires. There are also many who use chains, and all lorries need those to be allowed to drive in Norway winter times. On smaller vehicles, norwegians dont use chains.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yeah I only saw chains used on larger trucks. I am aware non studded winter tyre market is different for Europe and Nordic markets, but if you are living up there all winter it would make sense to use a studded.
@protestagain
@protestagain 2 жыл бұрын
@@MispronouncedAdventures In many towns, there is a fee if you want to drive with studs, but there is a need of at least 30% who are driving with studs, to tear up the ice.
@MispronouncedAdventures
@MispronouncedAdventures 2 жыл бұрын
Yes that was my understanding places like Stockholm they weren’t allowed studs in the city? I can also fully understand what you mean by studs tearing up the ice and that being a good thing!
