West Coast justement... Il faut que j'y retourne !

French know how to dance WCS! Loving it. I am more a rock n roll fan (especially the simplified 2 step version which is danced in France in parties), for two reasons: 1) the more energetic almost bouncing rhythm with fits my style (I have extremely strong legs), and 2) because you can dance that simplified rock-n-roll with anyone, even with a woman who has never danced before as this is the man's duty to lead. I took some West Coast Swing classes and I realized that the rhythm is much more subtle , the man s feet almost glide on the floor (less my style), and second, there is no chance to dance this with a partner who does not know WCS. So if you want to learn this, go there as a couple!

As someone coming from a ballroom background who did some basic west coast swing a few years ago, I didn't fully appreciate the aesthetic of swing (especially since after that I mostly heard of swing from my friend, who likes east coast swing, whose aesthetic I absolutely dislike). But seeing this video convinced me to go to west coast swing classes for the summer! Hopefully the routines there will be nearly as nice to watch.

That is the dumbest thing a teacher could ever say about anything. And if you are still beginner after two years, for your sake, change teacher. THAT screams incompetent (dance school milking students) practice. The leaders role is by no means harder than the followers role. NOT ONE BIT! The skillset of a follower is different, but extremly rich and a high skill is not easily at all obtained! Stop spreading BS about the dance.

What's the difference between West Coast Swing and Jitterbug or Lindy Hop? As far as I can tell it simply the gliding style of movement rather than the steps.
@crondawg101
@crondawg101 4 жыл бұрын
WCS is a slotted dance. Lindy Hop and Jitterbug are not slotted. Lindy Hop as the swingout which is more rotational. WCS has the whip which maintains the slot
@pingpong4811
@pingpong4811 4 жыл бұрын
WCS is much slower than Lindy (at least when dancing to Benny Goodman style swing, tho many scenes tend to play slower modern versions due to lack of fitness, I think), it is said to be slotted, but you can also to some extend ignore that (or go for hand body separation, which is not that common in Lindy) and dance it rotationally, just like you can dance lindy in a more holywood style, more linear. But that requires an open minded follower in WCS, dont expect that in every scene, only free minds - and always true dancers - will go for it, others will be dumb struck and might hesitate, because you are leaving the comfort zone. Lindy has its bounce from the swinging jazz music, boogie woogie has its groove to RocknRoll music and WCS has forgone with that bounce, tho you can do it if it fits the music. Other than that, yes, it glides much more, like you said. All the steps are the same however, got your walks, groove steps, rocksteps, tap and kick steps... you can use them all. However the leading gives in combination with the slower music much much more room for stylings. So lead an underarm turn and if the follower can dance, he/she wont just do a turn, but put something in there so you end up where the turn would always end, but the way to get there was used to express oneself. Lindy - as I have experienced over time - has gone from strict "male leads, female follows" towards "we have a dialogue" - but this is advanced stuff. Neither the average Lindy nor WCS dancer usually does it (requires you to be able to dance ON YOUR OWN FIRST and a lot of dancers cant do that or wont try it), tho I think it is more happening in WCS that followers will set the tone for a certain duration. This is not back-leading, but an idea the follower explores and offers to you and since you want to have a dialogue, you to some extent follow, but you still lead... Take a class from Ben Morris to experience some of this. You can use most of his stuff independently in Lindy or WCS, just adapt the style of the dance and follow the energy/movement. Cuz patterns are for teaching, but energy for dancing. Dont mean to be rude, but this video here shows very average WCS, not very free, not very expressive, because they stay a lot in the "vanilla form" of the move. Look at some Ben Morris, Victoria Henk, Torri, Schwimmer (I do not like him), Tatiana and Jordan (!) etc.

If West Coast Swing is done on the East Coast, then does it become East Coast Swing?
@markfrinch7865
@markfrinch7865 4 жыл бұрын
No, and this comment is not very smart. East Coast Swing is a ballroom adaptation from teachers from LindyHop that takes away almost everything that made LindyHop so good. Take a few classes in LindyHop and WCS, than go and take ONE class in ECW and you will agree. EVERYBODY agrees, excpet those who were mistreated by having to take a class in East Coast swing first. We are still fighting so nobody has to go thru this in their lives. No dancer left behind!

On one hand, I appreciate this video. There is little content put out by dancers below advanced level and this is a decent video celebrating our dance which is nice. I'd have no issue whatsoever with it if it wasn't for the title. "This is west coast swing". Yes, this is west coast swing. But this is also the first video you come across when you search the dance on youtube and therefore potentially one of the most prominent resources for a general audience that doesn't know much about it yet. And here it is misleading because West Coast Swing is so much more. An obvious point is the music. Sure, that's West Coast Swing. But WCS is also Blues, Hip Hop, Funk, Pop, etc., y'all know this is a loong list. This also correlates with a "vibe" the dance has. This video showcases one of a million facets that WCS offers in music, partnership and atmosphere, yet claims "This is West Coast Swing". Then there are the dancers. They're decent dancers doing a good job to the best of their abilities I'll assume. But all of them are on a similar level, they're all male lead - female follow, all of them share a somewhat similar body type. This is not a representation of our dance. We've got absolutely badass bigger dancers, have a bunch of amazing dancers who switch roles or/and dance and compete in their non-traditional role who are now even competing in switching across the pond in the US (and I doubt that it's gonna take much longer for Europe to catch on). The fact that dancers below or above novice level exist is an obvious one too which is ignored in the video. And what's with the dress code? I don't know when I last saw that many white pants during an event, nevermind dresses (unless it's super hot). I wouldn't mind seeing it there obviously but it does seem odd that these are the clothes deliberately put in a video claiming "This is West Coast Swing" when whoever had that idea could've picked anything else like the jeans, sweat pants and other stuff we're usually wearing. After all, there's a good reason, followers usually skip skirts for dancing. They're impractical and usually end up with us involuntarily exposing our underwear. And at last, there are the technical aspects. I don't expect this video to be technically perfect by any means but really, the rolling of the feet in the beginning (0:15) couldn't at least be edited to be on time? Same goes for some other bits, if you put in all this effort of filming, cutting and editing why not keep it on time? Then there's phrasing. There are some nice musical moments in here (although like half of them are drops which is like why, there are so many other ways to be musical but ok) but phrasing is the essential base line to musicality in our dance and this video is missing a whole lot of phrase changes (e.g. 0:54, 1:38 or 2:52). Again if you're gonna put in the effort of making this video why did you ignore those basic aspects when just a simple cut at the right time could've saved it. But overall, the thing that bothers me about this video is that the greatest thing about West Coast Swing is that you can always make it your dance due to its versatility. This video is not a good representation of that. It shows one way to dance WCS but it can't claim "This is West Coast Swing". And there are literally three videos out there (the other ones by Barna Westies and Peter Yin which actually do a good job showcasing the diversity of our dance) promoting West Coast Swing and this one is probably the first one non-WCS dancers come across when googling the dance so the misrepresentation does matter here. It's not the ideal way to market our dance and draws potential clients away from our community's teachers and potentially awesome dancers and people away from our community.
@MaxenceGross
@MaxenceGross 5 жыл бұрын
Hello Alina. Thanks for you long comment. There are some information you might want to know to reconsider your opinion. First of all, about the title: the idea was just to give an answer to a common question I faced very often when I started to dance WCS. It was never meant to be exhaustive. Notice I didn't name the video: "This is all of WCS" ;-) Of course it can be danced to many other kinds of music, by many other dancers, in many other places and in many other occasions. For the unity of the video, I decided to stick to one song, but it was a tough decision. Before I made this video, the only things you came across when you googled West Coast Swing were competition videos of Tatiana Mollmann and Jordan Fresbee (...) dancing at a level very very few of us will ever reach. So I thought it was not representative of what we danced, as novice or even as confirmed. Besides, they were all filmed indoors on shiny dance floors and I thought taking it outdoors would give it a bit of punch. Then please keep in mind there isn't a whole team behind this video. I made it on my own with the dancers I could find, here in Nantes, Western France. They dressed the way they usually dress and their bodies were just as they were. I tried to select a variety of levels, and unlike you say, some of them are very highly ranked competitors. There was no budget, no one was paid. The video is definitely not meant for promoting dance schools or for drawing clients. The only goal was to promote the dance. The rolling of the feet in the beginning is perfectly on time with the beat. I've noticed on some videos on KZfaq the sound can be slightly shifted. I don't know what causes that. But I promise, it is perfectly synchronized. I know the video is not perfect (I never claimed that) but it is on time, trust me. But most of all, Alina, when I posted this video some 4 years ago, I had no clue it would reach a million views and come out first when you type WCS on Google or KZfaq. I've had comments and questions from all over the world and I was the first surprised! So perhaps I could have used more songs, perhaps I could have called it "This is part of West Coast Swing", perhaps I should have made different videos with different dress codes for each country, and perhaps I should have shown more phrase changes and versatility but at first it was designed to show my friends and relatives what was this dance they had never heard of, so in the end, I think it still does a good job giving people an idea about WCS. But if you think you can film a video showing versatility, outfit and body diversity, different kinds of music, the million facets of WCS with different dancer levels, all of this in less than 4 minutes, please do it, I'll drop a "like" ;-)
