THIS is what happened after a week when we switched from hemp to a pelleted bedding in the coop.

Did you know that pellets could even be used as bedding for chickens? I didn't either. I decided to try out the pellets in the chicken coop. I have been using hemp bedding in this main coop for over three years. And after trying out the pellets for a week, it looks like I'll be sticking with the hemp bedding.

You can buy a 20 lb bag of this at tractor supply for around $6.00 (horse bedding pellets). we poor one bag into a wheel barrow and add 3 gallons of water. after an hour we fluff it so it turns into saw dust. then we put in the coop and scoop like cat litter. have not had to change the one bag we put in 5 months ago yet as only the poop scoops up. after scooping the poop we just run the scooper through the sawdust and it all fluffs back up!

I put mine in the wheelbarrow and wet them also, but I thought I had to let them dry out before putting in the coop? Which takes forever, btw. It would be awesome if I could put them in the coop after I fluff them.

Wouldn't want to do that in the winter. It would add moisture to the coop.

My favorite tip I learned off youtube for large area runs. The horse pellets from a farm supply store for 6-8$ a bag. I then lay the bags down on its side spaced apart. Slice an X all the way across the length of the bag and put a water hose on it for a bit. Do all bags and come back after 10 minutes. If you still see a bunch of pellets, just hit it again with the hose. I then send my son out to rake and spread it throughout the run. I use about 2 bags, sometimes 3 for an 8 x 16 run. Oddly, it never seems wet to me. Maybe slightly damp but dries out real fast.

I buy the 'kiln' dried pellets $6.00 / 40 lbs at my local feed store. I also have one of those under the bed storage bins beneath their perch, easy to clean weekly & saves on pellets.

I use pellet bedding for my chicks and in my doggy-litter pans for my litters of puppies. They work great and they're super absorbent! And the smell is definitely a lot nicer for much longer. I'm not sure what area you're in but I'm in the south and I buy 50lb bags of pelleted bedding for about $6/bag. Maybe research different brands...? That price seems pretty steep. Great video, thanks for sharing!

I can't imagine using pellets without hydrating it. It would be very expensive. I use pellets that are hydrated for my sheep. I throw a lot of water on maybe about 1/15 th of a bag (at least a gallon of water.) Then there pellets make a nice soft surface that is absorbent and smells pretty good.

I’ve been using hemp from day one. I’ll never switch. Easy to clean and maintain. No smell, which is critically important since I live in the middle of town near both an elementary school and two churches. Very little dust. BTW, I have four red leghorns.

I built a tray to hang under the roost bar. That smal tray catches 90٪ of the mess. Easy to dump out and dont take much shavings to fill it back up.

As a pee ious commenter said, you have to wet the pellets first. I can't get hemp in my area and getting tired of the expense of pine shavings, so trying pine pellets (again, can't fine another type) in my hen house and goat stalls. The first thing you learn is that for bedding application, you must wet them to expand them first (1 bag pellets:1 - 5 gallon bucket water).

I use the pellets that are used in Pellet Stoves, they are the same and so much cheaper, honestly I haven't used them for my chickens but I do as kitty littler. It works so well. For the cat i do not presoak as that is what her urine's job is, As you know, a little goes a long way.

Here is the response from Manna Pro when I reached out and asked about the cancer warning on the bag: "This product has naturally occurring chemicals that fall under Prop 65 (California’s rule). We have properly labeled the product for California. It may be Valley Vet’s decision not to ship to California any product that requires this warning. However, other retailers may still have this product available in California. The Proposition 65 warning is due to trace naturally occurring substances in the feed and are not harmful when fed to animals at the quantities in the feed but may be above the labeling threshold for the state of California. We hope this helps. This is an overview of the rule with California’s website URL - The State of California maintains a list of chemicals known to the state to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity in humans. The list contains a wide range of naturally occurring and synthetic chemicals. Several of these compounds occur naturally in the environment and, as a result, may be found in various products. In California, a warning such as the example below must be given for products containing listed chemicals above a given threshold. Manna Pro ships products nationwide, including to California. This warning has been added in accordance with recent changes to California law and does not reflect a change to the products themselves."

Interesting. In my neck of the woods, hemp bedding is crazy expensive. $100 + for 5 cuft. Pine pellets at TSC is $7.49 for 40 pound bag.

I believe you're supposed to wet it first, let it breakdown and dry and then lay them down.. tractor supply sells a 20 lb bag for $6 and I used 6 bags for an 18x20 coop/run and lasted me 5 months

Why are those pellets so expensive? I buy pellets for my cats as cat litter. I buy pine pellets with zeolite for $8. It is a 50LB bag that last me months. And some people can find it for $6.
@d.a.tsun5104
@d.a.tsun5104 2 жыл бұрын
Zeolite is the main ingredient of sweet pdz. Some chicken owners use horse stall pdz for the area under the chicken roost-bars (they either install shelf or the bars is above the coop floor), then they use cat litter scoop to clean the poops that clump from the pdz. Other than this video, I only saw one other chicken owner on KZfaq that used pellets for chicken coop bedding. That person, however, used wood pellets that normally go in fireplace. He told me to get the non-chemically treated, soft-wood (pine/cypress = evergreen) pellets. I understand why the non-chem, but not sure why soft wood instead of hard wood, other than the price.

Just wear a glove and pick up the poop by hand. Should be pretty easy since most is dried anyways.

Got a question that I hope you can help me with. I just purchased my Hemp for the bedding but what do you recommend for the chicken run? I see people put many thing from commercial grade sand to just plane straw.

Such a great question! Personally, I'm a big fan of using cypress mulch in my runs. The bags are super cheap from Home Depot or Lowe's. The mulch holds up over time and I normally change it out at least once (sometimes twice) a year.
