A level crossing is where a train is allowed to cross a public road safely. So as you approach a level crossing you are looking for signs that the level crossing is gated( gated level crossings have barriers that come down). Most level crossings in the UK are now automated, so as a train gets closer the level crossing lights gain to flash to warn all drivers and pedestrians that the level crossing barriers are about to come down and close the road. The road will close for a short amount of time to allow the train to cross safely. When the train has crossed the road, the automated barriers will go up to allow the traffic to continue on the roads. It is vitally important that you don't try and beat the barriers when they are coming down, this is dangerous and has caused accidents and could also damage the barriers.

Very good safety video about how to conduct yourself when at a level crossing. Watching the near miss UK videos also taught me to have a bit more patience when crossing the roads, just wait a few minutes instead of getting impatient, because if I step out and get hit by a car/bus/any other vehicle, it could be curtains. Good videos to learn a lesson from.

We moved off at 3:50 at this time the barriers were still ascending but more importantly we cross the stop line when red lights were still being displayed on the wig-wags. I think this will give a serious fault on test. If the barriers fail and suddenly ascend, the life saver is the red flashing lights. First car in the queue does need to take a bit longer to move off, no rushing as it is the worst place to stall and bumpy rails make things like changing gear slightly problematic. Subsequent vehicles will ideally start later allowing a big gap, bigger than the rails area, to build up in case guy in front stops. Emergency vehicles sometimes turn up and queue on the wrong side of the road and should be allowed to move off first.

At least in the driving test for Victoria in Australia, driving onto a level crossing while the lights are still red would be marked as an immediate fail, roughly the equivalent of a 'dangerous fault' in the UK - the examiner will direct you straight back to the test centre.

As a demo for people who don't already understand level crossing operation, it's a decent watch. Too bad you're wrong - most level crossings in the UK are NOT "automated", that's only the ones with the half-length barriers. Full-length ones are controlled remotely from a signalling centre and monitored by CCTV, but a few in the last decade have been fitted with automated obstacle detection. But none of those are in that area, this example of Bow Brickhill is controlled by the Marston Vale SCC and monitored by CCTV.
