I have type 2 diabetes. Last year there was a global shortage of Ozempic and I went six weeks without it, finally going back to the insulin injections I used to take twelve years ago. I went in for a routine eye test today and they told me that there were signs of diabetic damage to my eyes. I have to go back in three months to see if the eyes have healed or not. Now I understand that obesity can be a serious problem, but I think the people facing blindness or amputation should have first call on this medication. face-turquoise-covering-eyes

We still have the problems my country. Many doctors now refuse to prescribe it to people who want to lose a few kilos. You either are diabetic or truly overweight, and I wholeheartedly agree. There are people openly advertising on social media that they can sell it to people while there are shortages. It's aggravating!

My daughter is in the same boat. She’s insulin resistant type 1 with double mutation FH and is experiencing glucose deposits in her eyes. She has to go in for injections every 2 weeks. She’s only 23. Her FH has caused life threatening cholesterol issues and we’ve already seen her dad and aunts die before the age of 40 due to it. She hasn’t been able to get her prescription yet and the dr ordered it in November. She wants to live, not just lose weight. It’s terrible that the ones who need it are having irreversible organ damage while waiting on a prescription because it’s a new fad diet.

I am pre-diabetic and my doctor put me on this about a year and a half ago. It has worked very well and has greatly reduced my A1C. Now that doctors are prescribing this for weight-loss...I am sorry out of luck to be able to find any. Seems it should be available to diabetics first and not for weight loss until the makers of Ozempic can get ahead of the demand.

As a Type 2 diabetic, I was prescribed Trulicity in April by my PCP. She did warn me that a few of her patients had trouble filling these scripts because of docs giving these meds to non-diabetics. I saw Chelsea Handler talking about taking Ozempic to her friends, mentioning the side-effects (nausea, vomiting, etc.). Chelsea Handler is NOT a diabetic, but I am! I need this medication to lower my A1C (which it did) - she does not. She got it because she wanted to lose 5-10 pounds - and she's not even overweight! Ridiculous and selfish. Do not steal my medication because of your vain attempt to lose a few lbs. Type 2 diabetics need this - you do not.

I am so grateful that we have the NHS here, so if I were to buy abroad or on the internet it would cost me. I feel your pain re your back. I didn't have any side effects and felt fine but when I stopped using it, I gained it back! :( It was an eye-opener for me! That is when I decided not to take any more medication to lose weight or to do any type of surgery. I just need to make better decisions about my food intake. you can eat anything but in moderation and with portion control. That is the mystery of the ages! The answer to losing weight. I am doing it now and it is not easy but I lost about 24 pounds so far. I haven't stopped eating what I like, just in moderation.

I am on it currently to reduce my A1C from a 10.4 down to at least a 6. An then I am going to tell my doctor that I want to come off it and maintain my keto diet. I lost 4lbs on my own without ozempic in one month. ( I used to be 325lbs total, and I lost the 104 on my own.)Now in one week I went from 224lb down to 218lb. I had to look at my macros and self regulate a little better. I am sitting at 220 fed atm. The biggest issue with users of ozempic that take it for Diabetes 2 is the person is not changing their diet. Ozempic helps the pancreas work better from what I understand ,and makes you feel fuller faster and longer. Which helps you eat less. If you get put on ozempic please learn to eat correctly, so that you can come off the medicine with in a year or two. Eating the wrong way is what put a lot of diabetics on ozempic to begin with😂

Started having severe pain in his stomach and diagnosed with ulcer from the ozempic. Came off ozempic and feels human again. Got the ulcer healed. He did gain back all the weight as soon as he quit it, and is right back where he was.IT WAS DEFINITELY NOT WORTH IT! NOW HE HAS FLAIR UPS FROM THE ULCER! Think ALOT before going on this. Taking medication is easy, involves no work and discipline, and is far too common. How about reducing the consumption of carbs, intermittent fasting, weight loss, and exercise? The solutions are widely know and easily implemented. Of course, the question is are you willing to do anything other than whine about medications did not work?

I am glad I found this channel as its answered a lot of my questions. I have Type 2 diabetes. The problem is I only have half a thyroid as a benign tumor was removed some years ago. I take levothyroxine to make up for the insulin and happy I haven’t had to do daily diabetic shots. But, my body has an absorption problem. I need to take meds in liquid form as taking it by mouth, it may not absorb. This leaves me up and down with weight loss, etc. I have 4 sizes of clothes in my closet because of the weight fluxation. I have always been thin but since diagnosis of thyroid problems, I’m up and down, which is horrible on my depression issues. The last time I saw my endocrinologist, I mentioned how much the weight gain affected me. He didn’t know my weight changed that much. He thought that I was always my size. I explained that it wasn’t, and how I had to change clothes to fit. He literally skipped over to get the Ozempic since he had an answer to my problem. He demonstrated how to use it, and after we talked, let him know how it was. I am happy to say it worked great for me. I have always been nutrition-conscious, and try to eat well, so overeating wasn’t a problem. I don’t know how much weight I’ve lost as I don’t given a scale, but visually, it is significant. My watch and rings are falling off my hand and arm. Before, they were so tight, I couldn’t take them off. I don’t know how long I will be on Ozempic, but I really don’t worry about overeating as my weight gain wasn’t from that issue anyway. I will just stick to the same routine I had before. If the meds by mouth thing acts up again, not working as it should, and I start to regain weight, it is comforting to know I can handle it without having to do dieting, which didn’t help initially.

Maybe dizzy like I had low BP or low sugar but I did ok. I had to stop using it because I developed pancreatitis. That was awful! A little scary. I had to stay in ER for 24 hrs and in a room for three days then a two week recovery. It also aggregated my thyroid gland. It was enlarged and I could feel it pressing on my throat. Since stopping the medicine that stopped and it’s normal size again. I wish it worked for me. It did what it was supposed to do. I won’t say don’t take it but I will say listen to your body when you’re on the medication. If something doesn’t feel quite right it probably isn’t. So be cautious. I do hope it goes well.

I’m a type 2 diabetic who had already lost about 35 pounds over a 2 year period (went from 325 to 290) before my Dr put me on Ozimpic. That was about 2 years ago and I’ve been on Ozimpic ever since, so about 2 years. I take it once a week and for the first couple days after the injection I just don’t have nearly as many food cravings. In the first year taking it I continued to lose weight at a little faster pace and lost another 30 pounds (290 to 260). Then I started lifting weights and over the last year I’ve gained 15 pounds and am at 275 but probably look more like I’m 240 or so as I have gained a lot of muscle mass. For me it’s a win and I’m thankful my Dr. Prescribed it. However despite my weight loss my blood sugar and A1C have continued to get worse over the years despite losing 60+ pounds of fat. Use to my blood sugar only got extremely elevated if I had something really bad like a soda and a candy bar. Now it gets bad if I eat ANY carbs. Type 2 Diabetes is a struggle for real. If your pre diabetic take it seriously. Most days after any carbs my vision gets incredibly blurry which is a symptom of high blood sugar most people don’t know about and it sucks. Imagine living most of your life with very blurred vision that can’t be corrected.

Congrats on the weight loss and fighting the good fight! My heart goes out to you on the sugar and a1c. It really is a lifelong battle that we have to live and it is clear you have other factors causing this. Aside from Ozempic, did you also change your lifestyle in terms of food/drink? I am the opposite in some ways (I cannot get rid of the weight). 4 years ago I was diagnosed and had an a1c of 14.6 and 400 sugar! I was very depressed and just went crazy. I had always had low sugar despite being a bit round. With a complete and immediate lifestyle change (I have mostly maintained that), I was able to get down to regular to regular-ish sugar and a1c of 5.1. That does fluctuate and my genetics don't help. It may be that taking O may somehow be interacting with your food choices. If you have changed your diet and this is still happened, you cannot produce your own insulin and there is something that a doctor should be able to do to help you with this. Perhaps another med in addition to O or insulin? The blurry eye scared the crap out of me (I was practically blind for awhile). I then started to slowly regain vision and was just blurry with reading certain things. I could not read labels or small print or other things. I used a magnifying glass for months. It is starting to get blurry again. If you do not have a diabetes eye doctor, please go to one right away. You could have diabetic retinopathy and only an eye doctor can work with you on perhaps reversing this (if possible) before it is too late. Eyes, hands, and feet are the most affected by diabetes (besides kidney and liver of course). Good luck! I am fighting with you!

I went to pick up a prescription and decided to start taking it again. The dosage had moved up to a 1 and was getting ready to leave on an international trip the following week. I was in bed that whole next day with a killer headache and nausea. I didn't have an appetite for a whole week. Lesson learned. Don't stop taking it and then jump to a higher dosage.

And how many people going from obese to slim manage to keep it up for the rest of their life? Not many... hardly any. Most of us gain it all back, and more. Doesn't matter if it is with Weight watchers, lifestyle changes or medicine. If you stop following the routine, you gain it all back. And if you have never been obese you have NO idea of the food noice, the relief food can give, or how difficult it is to keep it up. Ozempic has shown the way for many other weight loss medicines now, so there are different to choose from. If obese people get help from a medicine it will stop them from dying too early. Bullying them won't help them. That is very often where it started...

There are several others in the class that work well. Liraglutide, dulaglutide. Ozempic isn't the only one... it's just a fad that this has RECENTLY been approved for this.. Liraglutide was approved for obesity quite some time ago... (Victoza for diabetes and Saxenda for weight loss--same drug.) So your doctor is not hamstrung by the lack of availability of the brand Ozempic. So don't blame the doctors... they don't advertise the drugs, and there are many in the same class that are effective. There was a time when pharmaceutical companies didn't advertise to the public as it was considered unethical. However, one company started doing in and the money started flowing in as patients began DEMANDING the drug they saw on TV from their doctor. That opened the floodgates. If I, a doctor, refused to give you the drug you wanted, you would simply go to another doctor. So PATIENT DEMAND destroyed the ability of doctors to control the management of patients... and now, of course, the Feds control most of it by approving which drugs will be covered by Medicare (80% of medical care is Medicare) and which won't. The doctor has very little say so in this. So don't go casting blame until you understand the whole situation.... Ignorance has a very loud voice in this country... and ignorance manages to be controlled by sound bites these days.

I'm old now but I lost a good amount of weight fairly quickly as an anorexic teenager, which eventually lead to me having to have my gallbladder removed. Fast weight loss can cause gallstones and I had to have surgery at 24 because of it. I now have other complications related to that because the surgeons and doctors don't tell you about long term health consequences. If you're motivated you can always find a quack to prescribe something for the right price but those people do not care about you, and don't give a moment's thought to your long term quality of life. It seems like "caveat emptor" buyer beware, needs to be considered more than ever especially in "health care."

I have to say most people on here are pretty lucky. I was placed on ozempic by a diabetes specialist nurse in 2021 for my type 2 diabetes as i couldnot tolerate other medications. As of June 2022 I haven't been able to fill a prescription in Australia. That's how bad the shortage is here. They think April 2023 it may be available. I did lose weight, but I have put some back on. I've always been cautious of what I eat and make sure I exercise. Thats important with Ozempic, not just take an injection and that's it! It's definitely got side affects, which of course affect everyone differently and I struggled at times, but it worked best for my diabetes. I just wish this was being prescribed as it should be and not off-label to the influencers and rich.

Now not only are my sugars up in the 10-12 range, my A1c is getting up to nearly 11. I get so MAD that rich people who think they need to lose weight are joining programs like Juniper who are buying up from the pharmas at a higher price whilst my pharmacist kept saying it would be available in a few months, which kept getting pushed back and back. Now I have permanent eye damage and it just makes me so mad that diabetics weren’t prioritised

What I've learned as Clinical Nutritionist is that although these obesity medications are very helpful for people who need to lose a significant amount of weight. Nutritional support is needed along side those medications to create healthy habits with food and around food to prevent the onset of disordered eating. The obesity clinics doctors that are prescribing these medications are really looking into the individuals lifestyle and eating patterns. Sometimes these medications are going to be or can be long term for certain individuals. It's important to know that obesity medications are not the quick fix for eating however you want.

Doctors and fitness experts need to be more harsh. Tell people to quit eating crappy foods. Tell them to quit being lazy. Tell them to take better care of their bodies. It sounds harsh but that's what people need to hear. More than half the country is overweight because they're lazy and have crappy eating habits. People need to hear that and not be butt hurt about it because they did it to themselves.

Gain back some, all, or more of the weight can be said of any diet where a person loses weight. In Canada, it is much harder to be prescribed Ozempic. All the possible side effects were told to me by the doctor, including the cost, that it might not be covered by my health benefits. It was then up to me if I wanted to go ahead a take it. I’ve been on it for about 6 weeks and have seen results. Also, you are likely to only lose 15-22% of your body weight. Don’t expect to woo lbs. by taking medication alone.

It depends on how big you were when you started. I was 210 when I started, and I've lost 35 lb in about 8 months, taking it slow and easy. But if I was taking the same medication and I had been 300 lb, I would have lost a proportional amount, probably.

I have been on Ozempic for about two months to help with my diabetes. I have lost weight as a side effect, really. For me, it is pretty brutal. Within 24 hours of my weekly shot, I started out nauseated, vomiting throughout most of the day. Now, with anti nausea pills, I just get sick, wishing I could vomit. I used to be regular as clockwork, now I have problems with constipation. I get serious acid reflux. I have very little appetite and no sense of thirst, so I have to be conscious of increasing my water intake. A lot of healthy foods make me sick. Salads are off the menu. I asked my doctor if I could get off this, but my A1C s have gone down a lot, and she rightfully wants that to continue. I dread the time when I will be required to increase my dose. I cannot fathom anybody who has half of my reactions taking this for weight loss. Anyway, that's my two cents worth. Good luck.

We are taking the responsibility out of people's hands and telling them that it's not their fault they are overweight. While I do agree there are factors outside of behavior that can lead to obesity, It is a huge component that is not being addressed. I work in a pharmacy and I see what people have in their shopping carts alongside picking up meds like ozempic, mounjaro, and/or wegovy. Fried foods, highly processed foods, sugary juices and sodas, etc. We need to stop trying to tip toe around hurting someone's feelings. As a patient I could very easily tell my MD that I'm doing the right things (eating healthy, exercising, etc), but how do they know? People will lie to others and themselves to avoid being uncomfortable or being ashamed of their actions. We need to do better with our health as individuals and as a country

There are two types of exercise. Are you doing both? Cardio is good but doesn't do much except burn off what you just ate (along with small benefits to get your heart rate up). Men and Women should do weight lifting. The muscle you build will even burn fat while you sleep. But if taking drugs made for a disease that it sounds like you were close to almost getting anyway, cool. We're all now living in a society where a pill solves everything. Until you read the bazillion side-effects from taking a drug that rather than doing the right things.

@@jamesbumgardner5955 I had and have been doing both cardio and weight lifting. I was not saying this is a magic cure. I was saying this helped me get over the plateau I had reached, which is very common for someone that has been losing weight over a long period of time. I do want to correct something I said in my previous post though. I should not of called said I was dieting. I made a life long change in how I eat. Diets are short term and people typically go back to their old habits after they reach their goal. I changed the way I eat and my activity for life. That being said I also want to point out that there are a lot of products and medications that are originally designed for one thing but end up used for other things. Viagra was designed to lower blood pressure, 7UP was originally a mood stabilizer, Rogaine was intended as a blood-pressure treatment. Listerine was originally marketed as a antiseptic, Coca-cola was created to cure morphine addiction, and Silly Putty was a rubber substitute. My point is that yes it was ordinally made for another use but that does not mean it cannot have other uses and benefits. I am aware of the side effects and that it is not a magic cure that the changes in my life have to be permanent so I don't gain the weight back. I made a informed decision and did my research before hand. That is everyone's responsibility to themselves.

The same with Ozempic... but at least it helps you NOT to have that awful food noice in your head that will always be a threat to your weight. Similar thing happened with opioids- pharmaceutical companies pushed it hard on doctors, so doctors pushed it at their behest and funding. Now we've overcorrected and production levels and access is so difficult that pain patients commit suicide, are forced to go through withdrawals when pharmacies run out, and the hoops doctors have to jump through now are so stringent that many can't prescribe the meds at all anymore/lose licenses/no longer have control over getting what their patients actually need. I have great concerns about how Ozempic/similar are being pushed heavily now and at a premium price. It's simply making it harder for the patients who actually need them to get them, and punishing those with real health troubles.

Ozempic is dangerous! I'm laying here in bed because I took Ozempic (Semaglutide) for 3 months and almost died. This drug caused me constant bloating which made me feel full, but sick when I did force myself to eat. By the 3rd month the damage was done. My liver developed advanced cirrhosis which led to bleeding in my stomach and upper GI tract. I lost so much blood that my hemoglobin went down to 9 and I needed 2 units of blood at the ER. I had then scheduled a upper GI Endoscopy for 3 weeks later. But on the second week just before my appointment my hemoglobin went down to 5.1 and I became delirious and unconscious. My friends hadn't heard from me and broke into my house and quickly called me an ambulance. I was rushed to a nearby ER for 2 pints of blood they squeezed into me to stabilize me and then taken by helicopter to a major hospital where they had to squeeze 2 more pints of blood into me. They found fluids in my chest (dead blood cells) that has to be drained and performed the Upper GI Endoscopy where they had to band the bleeders. I had received 3 more units of blood just to bring me back up to a hemoglobin of 9. I was discharged a week later. My organs are damaged now and I have been seeing doctors 3 or more times a week. I may need a liver transplant now from biliary cirrhosis. I did have a prior fatty liver, but I hadn't had drink in over 8 years. There is a October 2022 published report from Indiana University School of Medicine of someone else my age (male 50's) that required a liver and kidney transplant after using Semaglutide for 6 months. The report found no other explanation for his diagnosis. My hemoglobin counts are slowly improving, but I am unable to leave my bed for more than a few minutes due to all the complications caused my body.

@@trixier6505 "That easy" is the problem. It's not so simple to do it right, and is more difficult for some people. For many, however, it is largely a matter of motivation. There is a balance between quality of life and the effort and often the expense someone is willing to put into it. And if done incorrectly, it can produce poor results, or even weight gain. Of course, that's not always undesirable. A 6ft man I expect is generally going to prefer being 220 lb and muscular to being 190 and flabby. If someone is serious about losing wait, and not producing satisfactory results, they may want to consider speaking to a dietitian or a personal trainer.

Each person is different. To you, it may be a horrible drug, to me, it is wonderful because my A1c has gone from a 9.6 to 6.9 and I’ve lost weight. I don’t have any side effects. Please don’t label a drug as horrible just because you had a bad experience.

❤ Using any drug as a substitute for self-discipline and smart choices is never a good idea. Not all doctors are as intelligent or as concerned about your well-being as they pretend to be. This also applies to the over-prescribing of ADHD drugs and antidepressants.

Ozempic is also Wegovy. Same active ingredient. Wegovy is marketed for weight loss and Ozempic is for T2DM. I really wish that doctors would have correctly prescribed each medication for each group of people.

Sadly, I was never one of those people. I don't look to pills or anything for weight loss but I was excited a little by the idea of weight loss being a great side effect. I changed my diet completely after I was diagnosed with diabetes (type 2) and obviously tried to move more and exercise, and I was successful with a very small dose of insulin which was ended when I got my sugar under control. I am on no pills or insulin and while my sugar is still okay (and a1c is reasonable still) 3 years later, I gained back the small weight I lost (I lost 30+ pounds or so). So, same diet, same habits, but weight gain???

My father recommended I take this the other day, knowing that I’ve been struggling with my weight due to PCOS and depression. He’s been toxic to me my entire life and this is his way of "helping". ive been trying to walk more, exercise more and eat a balanced diet. He doesn't support me in those efforts and things that it's not worth setting goals to exercise more. His way of supporting me is by criticizing me, pointing out everything wrong in my life and then staying silent.

I'm 220lbs. I workout 4 times a week. Had a personal trainer for 6 months. I'm allergic to soy, so I can't eat processed foods for fear of having a reaction. I never lost any weight not matter what I tried. I hiked, walked, did yoga. Couldn't lose the weight. And this wasn't just a pound thing, I had to take pictures of my body from every angle and show after months that my body wasn't changing. I can't put to words how defeating it is to work so hard to feel and look healthy and fail. I had three major write ups covering everything, I had every test. Like, there had to be something wrong. Yet, I was perfectly healthy (except asthma, which isn't helped by being fat). I kept eating less and less, trying to lose weight. I got in my own head. I started skipping meals out of desperation. Like, If I didn't eat, I'd lose weight right? No. Three months of eating once a day, no weight loss, no change in my body. I was going crazy. I was working so hard to be a healthy weight and at 40 I just felt like it was only a matter of time before I started getting health issues from being obese. That's why I start this drug this weekend. I'm getting older, I don't want to be obese hiking up mountains wheezing anymore. I want my body to reflect my healthy actions. Sometimes you need help greater than what you can do yourself. Just adding a perspective of someone that needs this drug as well. I am sorry others have had to weight due to shortages. I believe there are now two other brands that make their version of this medication.

I've been trying to lose weight for 45 years. Since 8 years old. I've done everything. Sometimes I might lose 5, 10, 15 pounds, but then I'd gain it back *while still eating and exercising the same*. And then I'd gain more. Finally, I've been on Oxzempic for a month. I haven't weighed myself, but I feel like I've lost, but the biggest thing is that my blood sugars are better, and I am not hungry. I feel fantastic.

Try low carb/keto diet. No process foods and it's amazing because it keeps your insulin down. You can do intermittent fasting to keep your blood sugar stable. Insulin is a signal for your body to hold on to fat and store it. Just an option for you that has worked tremendously for me. Good luck!😊

I agree if you go into this thinking the shot will do the work for you and don’t educate yourself on nutrition, and exercise you’ll bounce back to over eating and other bad habits. It’s great if you are ready for a lifestyle change and use it to aid you. I still crave crappy food and it doesn’t stop you from grazing on food within reach, you have to do your part and continue better habits when the medicines gone.
