I have raised Jersey Giants. Great eggs,large, and plentiful. I wasn't family with the breed so purchased just 4. Kept them for 3 years, and production slowed, so I put them in freezer camp. They were 20 to 12 pounds, rich broth, and meat was delicious.

Those Cornish birds look like they’re getting nice and plump. I wasn’t able to get any meat chicks this year but I hatched a bunch of Rhode Island’s I’m gonna try to process I’ll just let them grow a bit longer. We’ve never processed chickens before and I’ve been watching some of your videos to learn. It’ll be a fun video for my channel also, I’m excited to fill our freezer. Thanks Mike. Have a great day, Chad.
@StoneKathryn
@StoneKathryn 3 жыл бұрын
You might want to keep those Rhode Island Reds as laying chickens. The laying hens don't get anywhere as meaty as the meat birds do. Also, stewing them is the best way to eat them because I've heard they are tough. I hope you can find a meat bird supply somewhere because it only takes a few weeks to get them to butchering size. Layers take 5 months before they start laying. Just saying.
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Kathryn Stone I hope it’ll all work out, I’ve heard that they can be tougher. They’re supposed to be dual purpose but the internet says they’re not as plump or succulent. Mine are looking pretty plump but then again I don’t have them side by side with a real meat bird. I might give it a go and maybe our old English sheepdog pup will get a bunch of meals too 😆 good experience for us too since I already have them growing and I already have 8 laying hens. Stay tuned for how it turns out 😉 Chad.

@@HiddenSpringFarm most of the people I know who have processed rhodies have said they're best as stew birds, not as roasters. You could make a mean chicken soup, though!
@HiddenSpringFarm
@HiddenSpringFarm 3 жыл бұрын
@@devilssemblance5938 they look like they're getting plump but I guess its the toughness of the meat eh. My wife make a good chicken adobo so there's that lol. We'll see how it goes, maybe I'll get a lot of dog food out of it only. Maybe I'll make a video about it lol. Cheers, Chad.
@devilssemblance5938
@devilssemblance5938 3 жыл бұрын
@@HiddenSpringFarm From what I know, it's due to how long it takes them to get to the point of worth processing. Waiting till about month 6 you get really nice, fat birds with good flavor, but you give up some amount of tenderness. The older the bird the better the flavor, but its a little difficult to make sure it's cooked right due to the toughness issue. If you've got a talented cook in the house, I wouldn't worry too much! You'll figure it out! Give your roosters at least 6 months for nice size, you could get a good 15lb bird preprocessing. I had a lovely roo before he was snagged by a stray dog recently, he was damn near 20lb at 8 months.

Your Family is wonderful. Your kids are great. I especially love when you cook together you all are too funny. I watched the video where you were wearing the Star Wars helmet and she was wearing goggles. You all hand me laughing so hard. You and your family give me so much joy. I have also learned so much from both of you. I hope I am blessed to meet you and your family one day. I live in town but I have taken my backyard and have made several raised beds and we are in the process of looking for land in North Carolina we live in Kentucky at the moment but the land around here is so costly. And there is no flat land at all. But thank you for always giving us laughter and teaching at the same time. You and your family are truly a blessing!

Wow , Micah handled that bag of feed much more easily than I do . He does have a advantage. He is young while I am old. Simply moving a bag of feed is a major project for me. That is why I have everything as automated as possible. Such as automatic watering with rainwater catchment. I am too old to be carrying water. The two of you have children to be proud of. I call my chickens , Chooks. Whenever they hear Chook , Chook , Chook , they come running because they know that there will be something good for them.

Just wondering as you moved the chickens today, would it be easier to keep them inside their chicken tractor until you move them. I'm sure it would be much heavier and maybe impossible. Maybe even use the tractor or lawn mower to move it. It all looks like a tedious job. The kids were great helpers. You are teaching them great work ethics.
