On Today's Episode:
Hey guys, Lisa here! If you didn’t already know, I am super frikin excited to share that I’m writing a book! To be the FIRST to get sneak peeks about my book and other exclusive content go to: lisabilyeu.com/ and be sure to sign up for my newsletter.
What does it take to make a marriage work? On this episode of Women of Impact, Lisa Bilyeu invites the person she most trusts to offer insight into that question--her husband of 17 years, Tom Bilyeu. And if nothing else, he’s certainly the only person she could reasonably ask to discuss his most embarrassing relationship stories. Over the course of the episode Tom and Lisa share their history and talk about how to build trust, why you need to keep your sex life alive forever, the extent to which you can influence your partner, and how to deal with changing roles in the relationship.
SHOW NOTES:
Why you have to choose the right person to be with in the first place [3:28]
Your personalities can be different, but your values need to be quite similar [6:08]
Tom discusses how easy it was to have differences when he wasn’t giving anything up [7:37]
“I don’t even know who I am without you.” [13:24]
To what extent can you change, manipulate or influence your partner? [14:13]
You should never weaponize your knowledge of your partner [16:57]
Lisa and Tom discuss the importance of defining words clearly [20:04]
Tom talks about defining roles in a relationship [20:58]
At first it was incredibly hard for Lisa to admit that she had outgrown being a housewife [25:04]
Tom tells the story of how Lisa’s changing role affected him [27:20]
Lisa and Tom discuss loving each phase of the relationship for what it is [32:36]
You will always find other people attractive [35:19]
Never take anything for granted, and keep your sex life alive forever [37:33]
“Don’t make me feel bad for asking, and I won’t make you feel bad for saying no.” [41:48]
Tom shares the story of how he and Lisa learned to not test each other or drop hints [43:02]

"Manipulation is moving someone to your advantage. Influence is moving them to their advantage". WOW!

That's a great quote! I'm adding this to my tool box. 1.Manipulator- attempting to control someone's thoughts, actions, and decisions at any cost for personal gain. 2.Negative influencer- peer pressure, incomplete or inaccurate advice.. No intent to cause malice. 3. Influential- someone who gives their complete involvement to help someone explore all options for the improvement to help the person make up their own mind no matter how it impacts the influencer.

Exercising control to get doing something for their own or our mutual benefit vs. exercising control over someone to my own benefit is a huge difference in meaning and purpose yet often just nuanced when actually happening.

It is so important to always remember a relationship can and SHOULD be like this! So many people I know speak of how it’s impossible to have this balance in a relationship. It takes self awareness, respect of self and partner equally and mindfulness. Mistakes happen but continuing to grow and learn together with open totally honest communication in all areas is a key. It also involves being with that person who is not necessarily similar to you but in touch with mutual respect and desire to be each other’s cheerleader and support is not easy to find. Be selective. Take your time. Sigh. Wish I had grown up with this background to model and advice.

u will not find anyone who understands all this. It is not something u find... it is something u do... more exactly it is the way u program ur minds. most people dont know how to frame/program a relationship u create growth mindset and comunication in couple... u dont wait for one day to find someone that was in a healthy relationship and his wife died so u step in ... dont expect to a man to be perfect because nobody is. u go trough the pain... it is the only way to grow... u take care of the balance of love in a relationship. the one that gives is the one that loves. Observe this troughout the relationship and balance it. Study about realtionships as u go along and transform urs ... reprogam both of ur minds ... take responsability ! There is no failure... u are a learner u either fail&learn or succeed

This is so interesting and touching! This is my eleventh year of marriage and I can relate to what you both said.it s so important to have the same values and principles and,at the same time, willing to learn from one another, enhancing each others' spirit and soul, encouraging one another... Correcting our spouse if he/she's wrong with so much respect. I told my husband before getting married:we will never ever use disrespectful words against each other, we won t go to bed being crossed after an argument and never speak bad at our backs, just try to solve our problems in order to really practice love to each other... Of course it is difficult but definitely worth it!!

I loved this show Lisa! Agree with so many points and i can relate so much to the last topic of the discussion. My boyfriend is a surgeon, super smart but a total disaster at remembering important dates or details. He is just not wired like me so i made him a bullet journal and marked the important dates like my birthday, anniversary, or other dates because he is Chinese and i am Spanish (living in China) so i like to celebrate certain things or traditions important to my culture. I no longer expect him to remember or think he loves me less because he didnt remember. I just accept he is not like me and thats alright and that is exactly why i love him. When i want something i speak it out and clear and sometimes i have to repeat it many times until he gets it lol but relationships are work so dont expect it to be easy peasy specially mixed cultural relationships. Big hugs from Shanghai Lisa, and to Tom what can i say, i love all he does lol Happy Valentines day ❤️

Not trying to add a negative comment or even be negative. I appreciate you showing how well your relationship works and how you make it work. I just want to point out that selecting a person to be your life partner, their main value should be how well is their relationship with god, who do they believe in and trust when help is required and so much more. And really you do not need to be super religious or any type of religious, God is God in all religious. When your relationship is great with god, your relationship with everyone else is just as great!

I have watched every impact theory episode to date, and many multiple times. I don’t know why it took me so long to grow my mental relationship with Lisa, but by god it finally happened last week when I watched the impact episode with Beyoncé’s make up artist, I can’t remember her name and I don’t want to discard this message so pls forgive me.. That said thank you for making the sacrifices to provide this content, my life certainly has been impacted in every aspect. Love you guys!

I've been following Tom for a little over a year now and it's had a profound impact on my life. I've loved getting to know your relationship through his eyes. This episode, really brought so much more to it. I will be watching it again with my wife later as I see so much value we can BOTH use together. Thank you for sharing your lives with the world. We're all better for it.

So I'm wifey #3, he's hubs#1 yet my third LTR. We treated our union like a corporate merger from jump. We created our own corporate culture if you will. We have our own language, much like you. This understanding of pack psychology was also applied, the roles of alpha & beta. We take turns, we understand who's good at what & when. The best was understanding we lead from wherever the foxtrot we stand, that leadership is fluid. Thank you for the Relationship Theory Reboot!!! That was brilliant content. Love, Christine 💋

YES WANT TO SEE MORE! You guys are great and so transparent. This was really enlightening to see how you clarified what you meant with language to make sure the feeling of the word was what was intended. Bravo Lisa and Tom, very well done. I hope you do have Tom on again and you guys elaborate on this topic.

I love you both! You two have just changed my mindset about romantic relationships and self-love. Women of the impact is actually my favorite show now, I am watching it like every day! This is some educational stuff that all people have to know in order to be more conscious. Ughhhh I freaking love you guys, please continue doing what you do, and yes I want more of Tom on the show, he is actually my favorite motivational speaker, I loved every second of his speech on Mind Valley talks.

I've been following Tom for some years and always enjoyed listening to him talk about you and your relationship together. Now, seeing the way you look at each other was just heart warming. But, most of all, the way you manage to pass on to the audience the wisdom you've gained together is valuable beyond words. I've learned so much from you! Thank you!!
