Singapore is more than just Marina Bay Sands, Gardens By The Bay and Crazy Rich Asians. Most locals who live here lead much more simple (but still very nice!) lifestyles away from the city center, that are very community driven. In today's video I was kindly shown around by two local friends, Edwin and Jessie, and they took me to a couple of really cool areas of the city that I had never been to before which is Geylang Serai Market and Katong, which is especially famous for its Peranakan Chinese history. We tried lots of great local food at both the hawker center and individual stores, that was honestly some of the best that I've had in Singapore.
I would definitely recommend booking a tour with Edwin since he is a licensed tour guide in Singapore, you can get in touch with him by using the links below:

I watched a film about Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew and his son, PM Lee Hsien Loong, and have always been so impressed with how Singapore became a prosperous and harmonious society based on the policies they put in place. The public housing system with quotas by ethnicity would never work in the US even though it encourages diversity. We could learn a lot from Singapore!

Im a singaporean, all that harmony is surface level, dig deeper and it pretty quickly becomes evident the majority race here is racist and has oppressive tendencies. Tje govt isnt all fantastic. Its got its own rubbish for sure, what ur told by locals here, the chinese, take it with a pinch of salt. The govt is good but its also very dirty. Lee kuan yew worked for the japanese during world war 2. He was a translator for them. Its anyones guess what he did for them. He isnt a saint like many deluded singaporeans here believe he is.

Good job , Alina . I am a Singaporean and this video touched on the rich cultural heritage area of Joo Chiat / Katong / Geylang Serai . Your tour guide friend , Edwin I believe was a former SIA flight crew member who did a fantastic job showing you places , local foods of different backgrounds with a great understanding of the architectural history of the areas . Well done .

Thank you for this educational video Alina! So proud of my good friend Edwin! Thank you for sharing our rich cultural heritage in the Katong area where I grew up and live. Love the explanation on Mr. Chew Joo Chiat (1857-1926) and his vast coconut tree plantations (King of Katong indeed!). From the history of Peranakans to the mythical creature Qiling, it’s all super interesting. Thank you also for highlighting the 'not-so-touristy' bits with your friends and getting them to savor delicacies such as 'putu piring', popiah (Singapore's version of a burrito! haha), and ondeh-ondeh (mochi balls 😄). I also liked how you highlighted the 'racial quota distribution' on public housing. As always, ever so clear! Walking tour soon please! 🙏

One thing most people do not notice was the handling and sale of raw meat in this country. All raw meat are chilled in covered chillers to a certain degree to prevent bacteria from forming and from flies getting to the meat. Room temperature meat are prohibited by law.

Singapore's hawker centre culture ensures that people looking for inexpensive food get food that is healthy, uses fresh ingredients and is cooked to order. This should be the norm throughout the world, and should replace the fast food culture in places like the US and UK, where poor people looking for inexpensive food are forced to eat food made from cheap, processed ingredients and prepared in an unhealthy way. Accommodation may be very expensive in Singapore, but food can be cheap. If you eat at hawker centres you can get by on USD 20-25/day. My personal favourite centres are the Golden Mile, Maxwell Centre and Old Airport Road. BTW I loved Sri Lanka! I hit some of the spots you recommended and you didn't let me down!! 😍

As a singaporean USD 20-25 is honestly way too much for hawker food 😅😅😅 15 USD would actually be more than enough to get you 3 meals in the hawker centres of Singapore :D

Peranakan food or we normally called Nyonya food is something I also like very much. Female of Peranakan are normally called Nyonya and guys are called Baba and all food are only done by the female of the family as of all past Chinese families. Yeah I really like the clip and remind me that I haven't been to Geylang Serai in quite a while now.

You could look at these government built HDB ( Housing Development Board) apartments on youtube by Stacked Homes. There are different sizes n prices which cater to singles, elderlies, families n young couples. It boils down to a need for space n affordability or a compromise of both. The government also gives a lot of different grants at purchase point.

Bonus points for getting beyond the tourist centre of Singapore, Alina. Joo Chiat is one of my favourite neighborhoods in Lion Town. Next only to Tiong Bahru. The big question for me however, is did you indulge in the green chilly with the prawn vadai? Neither Canadians nor residents of Japan are known for a close affinity with the green devils. But maybe, just maybe, you ventured beyond your comfort zone.

Kudos to trying out places that are more accessible by bus. Tourists don’t visit these places much because they are more connected by buses than the train. If possible, try Changi Chapel and Changi Prison. You can’t really visit the state prison but you can visit the chapel besides the prison that is dedicated to telling a part of our story in World War II. The other area with war history are Kranji War Memorial and Fort Canning. Anyone who has been at the prison area will see the difference between it and our Gardens by the Bay. Appreciating the alternate side of the law is a big part of understanding why and how Singapore went from “third world to first” in 50 years.

Hello Alina, what ever you do. Please do not shop in Australia. I heard your guide saying that the meat comes from Australia. It is true. We export the meat to Thailand, Malaysia, and Indonesia. When I dine in Thailand. I pay less than 200 baht for a T- bone steak, eggs, and veges all cooked. I did a bit of shopping last week. For a kilo of Tomatoes, Potatoes, 2 litres of Milk and 2 trays of chicken pieces cost me $48.80cents. I might try to eat grass like my sheep.

Edwin, popiah actually originates from China, the southern part of Fujian( Hokkien) province !Cities like Xiamen ,Quanzhou etc.The version we get in Singapore is a simplified one with a lot of turnips . The real ones are made with ingredients like Winter bamboo shoots , Chinese leeks , ( hence our family only make it during Chinese New year when these are available) plus carrots ,cabbage, turnips, beancurd( taukwa) prawns ,pork, and French beans . Taiwan also has popiah which they call rune bing( 潤饼)or Chun bing(春饼 )

Should have been an interesting tour. Did you ever get tired of the back ground noise from the street? It seems to be loud.

Sadly my main camera that connects to a mic broke on the trip and the same model was sold out in stores. I got an action cam instead to tide me over but sadly the sound picks up a lot of bg noise.

"Home ownership rate" as it is often discussed in the media is a highly misleading statistic. One would think that it is the % of people who own homes, but it is not the case. What home ownership rate actually is - is the % of residential units that are owner occupied. Sounds similar but it has a very different meaning. A country can have 100 people and only 1 house, but as long as the owner is living in it, the home ownership rate is 100%, even if the other 99 people are homeless.

It would be a challenge not gaining any weight, even just staying for a few days. I hope you did not, Alina!
