Using Push 3 in standalone mode is great, it’s an amazingly powerful workstation and it’s a breeze to make beats with it. Not using a computer and being totally standalone can be really cool and inspiring.
But from my experience using it for the last 2 weeks, I was more productive working in controller mode. From all beats I started since I got the Push, the two that I finished were both using Push in controller mode and just basically developing the tracks in Ableton Live on the computer.
Also, I do realise transferring tracks to the computer is just super super quick and easy with Push, so there’s nothing stopping me from finishing the other tracks that I started in standalone mode.
Is there even a point in using Push if you’re using Live on the computer? Some people might consider it pointless.
Well, for me Push really excels at keeping you in the groove while recording parts for your tracks.
Sequencing drums, starting and stopping the sequencer, deleting recordings. For these tasks, it’s really great to just be more tactile and not fumble around with the mouse. So I really like having it in front of me.
But when it comes to browsing samples and presets and editing parameters, notes, automation, I find that working with the mouse is just quicker and more efficient.
And that’s despite the fact that the browsing experience and note editing experience are improved compared to Push 2 with the introduction of the jog wheel. I still think Ableton have done a great job with it.
And there’s something to be said about having access to VST instruments.
For me it’s not so much about the effects as Live’s affects are just great, but there are some very particular sounds that can really add to the vibe of your track that you can’t use on the standalone mode because you can’t load your third party plugins.

Drift sounds from you! It will be 💣💣💣. Honestly, I was going to suggest it to you... I just bought a sound pack for Drift from Subsocial Studios, but it's not quite right. Of course, what you presented in the Drift video, setting up different types of bass, and what you use in your productions, that's my cup of coffee. I'll be the first buyer. 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

I’ve got to agree man, controller mode really feels like the best of both worlds to be honest. Most people would be better off buying an m1 MacBook Air for the extra 1k

Yeah man, I watched your video on the same topic. And it's definitely a bit too much if you can get brand new Macbook Air for the same price, which is way more powerful and battery lasts longer.

Yep. If it was an M1, 16GB memory, 512 ssd and longer battery life, the $1,000 over controller would be worth it. As it is, the stand alone isn’t a good deal, imo.

Thanks for the advice. I did get the controller version right when the stock was replenished and love it! I had no idea all the video plugins would be auto mapped as devices which eliminates the need for an extra controller for visuals. I have an MPE guitar that is great but the push is much much better for those precise changes. game changer....

Great information...After trying the maschine mk3 and the mpc live 2, I'm thinking of trading them both in for the push 3. I can not justify the heavy premium for the standalone version with such a low spec, so i think I'll go for the controller. If someone gets a 3rd party NUC working, it would be a fraction of the ableton premium.
@LowHeatBeats
@LowHeatBeats 11 ай бұрын
Yeah, the standalone capability is quite expensive. The spec is not that bad though. I’m not sure it would be possible to fit a more powerful cpu and still be able to cool it as the Push gets quite warm anyway.

I’ve been producing music with dawless stand-alone devices such as mpc one, digitone and few other synths. It’s cool option for jamming and creating everything within those boxes. After 2/3 years I’ve decided (this week) that I’m going to build hybrid setup with push. So far it was a great idea. Firstly because I can record everything separately and have more control (before last thing in a chain was sp 404, I was recording signal previously mixed within the devices). I think I’m a bit tired with dawless setup and I want to go back to Ableton and it non limiting workflow :) it

I bought the MPC Live 2 because there wasn't a Push 3 yet at the time. Meaning: a mobile standalone DAW-in-a-box that allows you to sketch out ideas (and finish them on the computer) everywhere. So what do you think is missing on the Push 3 as a standalone groove box compared to the MPC and the Maschine Plus?
@LowHeatBeats
@LowHeatBeats 11 ай бұрын
Nothing is missing if you ask me it does what I need it to do. It's great but a bit too big and heavy for being mobile. I'm keeping my Push 2 for now and enjoying the flexibility and power of Ableton Live on the M1 Mac with all my plugins, etc. I actually like to make music on a computer.

I would like to get the controller only version and try out the workflow. curious of your opinion on not having the standalone option at purchase but available for the upgrade. main reasons are mpe and in/out not needing another audio interface. I do have the launchpad pro, usb-c mixer and a rack mount midi mix xl in/out. but was hoping to have it for live shows instead of all the work arounds.
@LowHeatBeats
@LowHeatBeats 11 ай бұрын
I think it's great - if you decide you need it after all and you upgrade later it will cost the same as buying it with the standalone option form the beginning. I do think the standalone option isn't the most practical and rational purchase though. You can buy a brand new Macbook Air to use with the controller version for less and get more power and battery life. Ableton on my Mac has been more stable than Push 3 standalone as well.

@@LowHeatBeats Thanks and I appreciate the response. I am honestly just a little tired of workarounds. I use the 1010 blackbox, m8 tracker, op-z, launchpad pro and synth modules and trigger with ableton but would rather sell a few of these devices and sort of combine them plus the in/out audio.

Aha!!!! Was just asking Dylan Paris if this idea would work. Use Push 3 connected to Computer, turn off Monitor and not touch Mouse n Keyboard for like 90% of things. My idea is Non Stnadalone 3 and Heavy duty Computer so I get the standalone lime experience but with all my VST’s and M4L devices tho I assume there will be some issues. Ive been doing lots of vstpreset files with most used controls mapped so I can search on my current Push 1 even and use its Encoders to control the VSTs. Now back to watching this video!

Standalone gives you extra flexibility for live situations, for "out of the desk" set ups and such. The greatest idea that Ableton had with this device is giving us the choice to upgrade if we want or need to do that without having to buy a new machine.

I've really been questioning the overall usefulness of standalone devices haha. I don't think it can really be the end-all-be-all. In the past before DAWs, everything had to go through the studio to become a complete recorded song. DAW is a full music studio. No standalone sampler/sequencer, at all, comes the slightest bit close to what DAWs are meant to do. DAW is a FULL SCALE studio capable recording environment. I am starting to wonder if a lot of this is just really effective marketing that really isn't offering anything that valuable. Or maybe it's just people trying to find the role of what is essentially a new form of instrument. I don't know, just thinking "out loud." Haha
@remyvegamedia
@remyvegamedia Жыл бұрын
P.s. I use Push 2 and have an SP404 MK2. Push 2 is much better environment than all of the standalone devices I use. It offers me the tactile focus and muscle memory, but doesn't slow anything down unnecessarily.
@LowHeatBeats

Yes, best of both worlds is where it's at. I don't know if it's marketing, I guess people are always saying they want standalone in comments and companies giving them what they want.

@@LowHeatBeats Yeah it's hard to tell, like the chicken or the egg paradox haha. But I'm starting to feel really content with my Push 2. I mean, I play piano/keys, so nothing portable will be able to replace a real piano, or at least my 65lb hammer action 88 key workstation. Certain parts of the creative process just aren't meant to be portable and that doesn't mean they're less significant.

If you're referring to the computing power of Push, I think it's sufficient for a standalone device. It's more powerful than similar devices like Maschine Plus and MPC. A more powerful CPU would probably require a fan and I wouldn't want that.
@neonvoid
@neonvoid Жыл бұрын
@@LowHeatBeats i wish they would utilize the ARM architecture instead of intel for the same reason. Its quite astonishing that they finally built the standalone. They said this was the plan from day one from 10y+ ago, but it took them multiple steps to get there. I played 10+ live sets with the standalone, and I really enjoyed it, but 8-10 channels is the maximum it can handle comfortably at 48khz. Anything on top of that will start seriously deteriorate the UI display time. Luckily the sound driver and the inputs are still top priority, but the visual feedback can go down to 5 FPS when it gets too much load. With my external M1 Max CPU i can not only run VSTs, but on top of that i can stack up 14-16 channels without any performance penalty. For the standalone, its great what it is already, but the moment they offer an upgraded CPU, i'll upgrade.
