yeah, when knight is lost, it becomes really easy to convert extra bishop and extra pawn. Tricky part was how to trap the knight. I think Firuzja made some mistakes there too and Carlsen realized it quickly .

If the queen took on G2 like the person asked, the king wouldn't be able to go to g3 if the queen was there. The REAL reason is because then Magnus' pawn on G7 would be up for the taking as well. By the rook that would threaten the queen after Magnus took said pawn.

For those wondering, Alireza resigns because Magnus is about to play Bg3 taking away the knight's h4 and e1 escape squares, and there's no way to stop Kf3, winning the knight

Without analysing the position much, it seemed that Magnus wasn't making any real progress so why did Alireza change things up with that knight mive rather than just repeating what he had been doing?

I think Alireza was in aa must win situation and repeating would've got him a draw which was not enough

@@JT11111 it wasn't a must-win, this was game 1 of the tiebreaks, Alireza was trying to make a draw, that's why he left the knight hanging so often on h3, if the black pawn took it it would be forced draw. I think Alireza eventually moved the knight away because Magnus had eventually got his king round to support the h-pawn which changed the situation for the knight

It would be a draw if he did. After taking the knight, he'd lose both pawns to the king. Magnus couldn't stop that from happening and it would be a draw.

Just capture the g pawn at any point. There were so many instances where AliReza could have simply captured that pawn with his knight. No forks or anything. Just simple capture.
