Never really understood why people are so focussed on euclidean distance in regards to chess. All moves are done in discrete steps (squares) and all except the knights are even done on a single line. Using something like the chebyshev distance seems much more natural to me. It also makes the rook and the bishop more comparable to each other without giving the bishop a weird advantage. In most cases in chess, counting squares instead of calculating distances makes so much more sense
@rohan1864
@rohan1864 4 ай бұрын
Dude Chebyshev metric? How is that more natural than taxicab. Or maybe you've just mistaken them. In the Chebyshev maximum metric bishops have a different weird advantage, cause they can get in one move to a square at a certain distance, while rooks would have to make two moves of the same distance to get there.
@cookie_space
@cookie_space 4 ай бұрын
@@rohan1864 No I didn't confuse them. I just don't know why one square on a diagonal should be worth more than one square straight, given that the piece can move diagonally. I guess the issue is that rooks and bishops move so differently from each other. For a rook the taxicap metric seems natural since it can't move in diagonals but that doesn't really fit for bishops. And bishops don't really gain an advantage in that sense, since there are plenty of moves that would require two turns that a rook can reach in one.

People dont really care about the math, its just that using a long decimal sqrt for these challenges is funnier than the conventional way bc its another way he overcomplicates his challenges. Same as using a python script to get random numbers instead of a website or interprets challenges meant to be for his pieces as also applying to opponent pieces. Unnecessarily overcomplicating it is one of the most common funny things about this channel
@rohan1864
@rohan1864 3 ай бұрын
@@cookie_space every chess piece produces their own metric anyway with the way it moves, you can viably measure distance on a chess board in knight moves and it is a metric by force. I guess the taxicab just seemed more intuitive to me.
