I have worked in production with Coney at events (like Frostbite) and can be a character witness - he does pace backstage while having a serious thinking face before MCing. But the times I’ve seen it, it never looked like a stressed face.

Fun story. Well told. Feels like a lot of misses on the Org's part though. Shouldn't they be providing a dress a code, translations, maybe even some basic coordination efforts on how folks should contribute expertise to each section? I mean at minimum, seems like there should have been clear direction on the approved names for the products on display. Why is the talent doing wardrobe, research and not even being given bare style guidelines? They hired a dude who can yell stuff good not a dang project manager.

I personally believe that FCG players have a bitter taste for smashers because they are so disconnected from everything else that isn't smash or platform fighter related and it causes there to be almost a natural divide. FGC players will get their toes wet in every style and form of fighting game, but smashers tend to stick to their little bubble and they behave in a very clannish way. I will admit that the skills used in platform fighters doesn't translate well to other games so it can be rough, but even if you don't play the game, you could show a passing interest and understand things outside of your bubble for the sake of flexibility and understanding. "A jack of all trades is a master of none, but oftentimes better than a master of one."

Smash players talk about how "Smash is a celebration of games!" And then whenever a fighting game related character appears in it they go, "OMG! Waste of a character slot! Nobody cares about this character - or rather me - and so it's a wasted slot!" And if there are inputs they refer to simple inputs as "boOMeR iNpUts"

I’m a Smash fan who plays other fighting games and yeah, what you mention in the video is a big part of it but this goes waaaaaaaay further with other factors. For example, Smash fans having their own weird terminology for terms already established in other fighting games. Smash players say “friendlies” but fans of almost every other fighting game say “sets”. Smash players say “Dittos” when both players are playing the same character, fans of other fighting games will say “Mirror match” and the fact that Smash players didn’t adapt those more universal terms in itself is kind of telling how separate Smash fans are from the rest of the FGC. I have no idea where this all actually started but if I were to take a guess, it has a lot to do with the fact that, a large chunk of the Smash fanbase are Nintendo fans, many of which are Nintendo fans who may not have owned any other competing console for either a very long time, not at all, or if they have it was for like one or two instances and that’s it and most of the traditional fighting games that are the pillars of the genre historically don’t really come out on Nintendo consoles very often, Mortal Kombat is probably the most consistent one and even that fell out of Nintendo between Armageddon and MK11. But yeah, N64 didn’t get any of the Street Fighter 3 or Alpha games that were coming out at the time, it didn’t X-Men Children of the Atom, X-Men Vs. Street Fighter, Marvel Superheroes or the other Marvel and Capcom crossover game that were coming out, no Rival Schools, no Power Stone, no KOF, Fatal Fury, Soul Caliber, Tekken, Virtua Fighter, Guilty Gear, ect. Obviously there were good reasons for all of those especially Virtua Fighter which was a Sega property anyway in a time where they were still competing with Nintendo. So naturally, Nintendo fans who got the N64 as either their first console or as a follow-up to having a Super Nintendo and/or NES, probably wouldn’t have any amount of traditional fighting game experience outside of Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and the SNES version of Killer Instinct and obviously these people would be the ones moving onto Melee joined by many kids who got the Gamecube as their first game console and once again, Gamecube didn’t get a lot of the big traditional fighting games that were coming out at the time, Gamecube didn’t get Tekken Tag Tournament or Tekken 4, Gamecube got Soul Caliber 2 but not Soul Caliber 3, it got the CVS2 port that came out in that generation but not the MVC2 port, it didn’t get the Street Fighter anniversary collection that came out in that era and none of the Virtua Fighter games even after Sega went multi-platform in this era. and of course this would extend to the future Nintendo consoles that would get Smash games, meanwhile more and more people were getting into the Smash series for the first time up until the Switch which easily has the most traditional fighting games on a Nintendo system by leaps even if most of them are ports. GBA got a good amount of traditional fighting games too but those didn’t get all that much attention at all. Again, this is just a guess but it would very, very much explain why Smash fans are so separated from every other fighting game fandom. It would also explain why people didn’t know who characters like Kazuya was or Sephiroth or Terry because those are primarily Nintendo fans speaking who couldn’t play the fames those characters are in outside of a select few very specific instances, and naturally they just hung out in this Nintendo/Smash bubble together isolated from all these other parts of gaming regardless of how critical they were to video game history. I don’t mean this in a bad way, by the way, this is a totally understandable outcome after how small of a factor traditional fighting games were on Nintendo consoles for so long, shoot I was there at one point which is partially where this guess comes from.

Being realistic, it makes sense all of the things you say, smash and the platform fighter genre are completely a different beast to traditional fighting games, even the fgc themselves get really complex, and since smash players deal with a completely different set of tools and mechanics(for starters, there are platforms and we use stocks and knock back, completely different to long combos on guys with no knockback and a life bar). One of the main problems of the community is that smashers have a ton of people who only care about their game(again, makes sense, even the fgc fight themselves for what franchise is better because people like a franchise more than other, or even hate the other one for not being like the one they like), making the relationship more uncomfortable. The best thing would that everyone plays a bit of everything so they can understand more the other guy. But that ain't happening, altough i see that happening more lately.
