I’ve taken to A/B testing my mixes with a range of successful “example” mixes right in the project. You’re right - it’s possible to do every stage (writing, arranging, composing, mixing, mastering) - but Dua Lipa mixes sound totally different than Weezer . . . and I can imitate the EQ and stereo field of either IN REAL TIME . . . finally I said “screw it” and focused on imitating myself 😆

I'm constantly amazed by how 'off' my own judgement has been on my mixes. I completely agree that the only way to get better is to finish stuff and move on. Even better if you upload said stuff, it's like the answers come to you as a reward for having shared stuff that deep down you're not really happy with.

My trick is to sit on my mixes for a week or two, then listen to it with friends; Usually I realize all my nitpicks are insignificant and my mix is fine, or I just need twenty minutes to tweak some things. But I think after 20+ years I'm better than I give myself credit for.

This video came at the perfect time for me. I had mix I was working on with parts that I really liked, but there were some tempo issues that was making things crazy. Was SO tempted to start over, but this video encouraged me to keep going and a week later, I have something that is getting close to being maybe the best thing I've ever recorded and mixed! As a bonus, I learned new skills by commiting to the mix I had that will certainly be useful in the future as well. A more knowledgeable sound engineer would have probably fixed things WAY different than what I did, but in the end I'm really happy with the end result. This is why I ALWAYS come to this channel fir mixing wisdom! Thanks!

There's a lot of truth to this. I finish 95% of all the projects I start. Having a steady release schedule(once or twice/month in my case) forces you to come to that point where you're "done" with a project/mix. Retrospectively, listening to mixes I did a couple years ago, there's a lot of room for improvement, but I see growth, and in the end I think that's what matters.

Every project I work on has a saved version as “ROOT Version” which basically is the primary instinct mix. In my experience it’s usually the one with the most groove and feeling. After hearing it a few weeks later with a detached perspective and comparing a/b with the “very technical mix” I usually fall back in love with the root version. The fact of having done a very “technical mix” gives me the ability to pin point and choose wisely the technical decisions I’ll be adding to the root version. Usually its just some nuances here and there and I lost hours and more hours doing all sort of technical decisions in the “technical mix”. Its like trying all options and choose which one’s to apply on root mix. I guess this is more due to not having the perfect audio environment, so its the only way I found to be “sure” of what’s necessary to polish properly the mix.

Hey Greg, in my experience it doesn’t matter if you do restart, it still ends up sounding the same, so unless you’ve made some shocking mis-judgement, you’re only wasting time. If you’re really hating the mix, its much more likely a song problem, or a recording problem.

This is what it sounds like when you completely grasp the concept of your craft to a primal degree. Yeah you might know how to use a compressor. But this gentlemen knows what a compressor is thinking.

This is what I needed to hear to get my mixes finished. As someone who works alone, I really appreciate your perspective on things.

I mastered a song and was happy with it! Three Days later I did something else to the master and it was more transparent and clear but the bottom end and the overall feel was almost gone. In the end I was not sure what is the right thing to do. After this video I decided to stay with the first master and now I´m happy! RESPECT YOUT WORK! Thank You Gregory!

Well formalized! I am at the terminal stage of this redo disease (although - strangely - this is a disease without a terminal stage) where you have to give up mixing or start mixing finally. The deep root of my problem is that I love the things I am mixing and they are too important to me to be just a part of a compulsory learning curve. What I usually do, due to having no time pressure other than the Human Condition, is to reach a credible almost done pause point and then put that mix aside for 1-4 weeks while I take note of things to fix. I'm doing orchestral scores these days, working with samples, and the tempo editing is the thing that surprises me the most. Cheers

I never start a new tune until I've finished the one I'm on. I had hundreds of unfinished tunes until I started doing that about 15 years ago. The problem is that working on the same tune becomes boring. But the sooner you get the 'boring' tune finished, the sooner you can get on with a new one. Wouldn't work for everyone, but it works for me.

I make adjustments all the time... 300 backup copies with prevoius versions... no progress just digging and adjusting all... nightmare!

Ya know I agree almost fully, and will offer some further food for thought. Despite mixing albums for 20+ years now, I'm still learning and levelling up, and spending a great deal of time on a project can be valuable if one has that luxury. Case in point, I've been producing this one (personal) album now for almost two years with well over 1000 hours just on the mix. Yes I could have called it 'good enough' ages ago, however the ensuing journey has taught me a lot of new tricks and I've raised the standard for myself that I will not be comfortable walking back from (hearing the earlier versions is night and day difference). So from my perspective there can be value in getting into the weeds and spending 'unjustified' time in the subtle nuances of a project (as long as you're able to keep perspective, which is where those breaks are key). And looking back, every album that I've spend way too much time on has stood the test of time (at least mix wise), even from my early days. I think if you listen to a thing enough times, you will figure out everything that it needs.

I had endless loops of obsessive cycles of mixing over and over, changing this, changing that, recoding over and over again, but luckily I came across the mindset that nothing is ever perfect and it’s better to finish and settle so we can grow with new material down the road. I discovers this philosophy before watching this video, but damn, your videos made me feel less alone for sure.

I totally agree! For the hands-on part of a mixing course I once re-mixed a song that I had already mixed a couple of years before. Thought it would be interesting to see the difference and to see what I've learned in this course. As it turned out: The two mixes were VERY similar with a few little details that may have been better in the new mix but an overall better sound in the old mix. And then there was this time, when I mixed a song and halfway through didn't like where it was going; went back to step 1; the mix ended up being pretty much the same with just tweaking little details. Since then I've pretty much always been sticking to my first intuitive mixing decisions and never looked back.

True Story... sometimes i am already done, but so deep in the progress. Then i cant find a place to stop... until i go to sleep, listen to the track 2 days later and then directly see, what was good or bad. Another aspect. A song or track is what it is. Sometimes i try to "add or fix" things that where missing to me in a mixing and adding stuff process.. but nothing good will happen. i then have to respect, what i did, accept the piece of music that i did and go on... the learnings i made on one track never get "into" this particular track... it always adds to my skills on the next and the next and the next track... keep building and going on... true story
