I followed your timing instructions in your 4 part video and successfully fixed my personal 2008 F-150 and runs like a new truck. With the confidence of fixing that, our work truck F-250 with the 5.4 had failing cam phasers and start up rattle. I fixed that saving my company lots of $$. You are the reason I drive older fords since you have a video on every possible issue. With all of your fixes my truck is a great running vehicle and could not be happier with the 5.4.

@@ktmguy64 the first time on my personal truck it took me several weeks working in the evenings after work. By far the lengthiest part is removing all 24 roller rockers and reinstalling all of them after timing. Very difficult. Rule #1, don't buy expensive new car crap designed by an engineer who never got their hands dirty. In 1991 I had direct contact with the Romeo engine engineers. I had the first confirm fix with the 4.6 modular engine adjusters and chains. I told them the design had "foreseeable risks". They didn't listen. I'm a retired Ford, Lincoln, Mercury technician. @ChevyConQueso
@ChevyConQueso 4 ай бұрын
@InvertOtaku-os9lj Anything OHC with long chains from any brand can have these issues. It isn't nearly as prevalent on the 2V. No cam phasers means it won't have those issues. Keep your ears open for a pulsing hiss (plug backing out), or any rattles, which could be chains and tensioners, or roller followers. Many stock 2V oil pumps have taken those engines to 400K. I wouldn't worry about it, and I don't, on my daily driver 4.6. They aren't using extra oil to feed the tensioners like the 3V is. The tensioners are the last thing oiled in the 3V system, and part of why they starve and fail. HV oil pumps make a difference with that.

At this point, the 4.6 and 5.4 issues have been so widely studied, if you buy one or the other with around 100k on it and just keep up with the widely known problems, they will literally last well over 300k. They are some of Ford's best engines ever, they just both have 2 or 3 common big problems that if you fix every 3-5 years, you got an engine that might last you your whole life

A timing chain and belt change, spark plug change every 3-5 years. Bleed your brakes when you should and don't ignore your coolant tank and power steering health and there's really nothing to these engines. When TF have you heard of a blown gasket or something extreme internally on a triton? Yes the spark plug threads are a huge let down but if you change them appropriately there's nothing to them. I have a 97 f150 with 290k on it completely beat and rusted to shit with every repair needed possible. But the engine I would trust to last to 500k and would trust it more now then a brand new anything today seriously. Seriously encourage those interested to study the NVH the 4.6 has, the equal piston stroke and bore size I believe really contribute to it's success and it's very overlooked

This is almost exactly what i saw in my 2010 expedition when i dropped the pan and removed the front cover after buying it from a private seller. Adding insult to injury, someone had previously jammed the phasers with random parts so they wouldnt move (i have pictures), and when reinstalling them had somehow managed to mistime the driver side bank, so not only was the VCT system non functional, it was also mistimed, and had a strange power curve/lack of power that i never thought was quite right, and of course learned why after tearing it apart. 3 days and a full OEM timing replacement kit later, the motor ran so much better it was unbelievable. Still got some other things to fix up, but at least the main issue is fixed now.

I have a 2004 F150. It has 400,000 miles on it right now. It has been making that noise now for about 200,000 miles or so. I want to just how far it will go before it finally lays down. The only thing I have had to replace has been 3 alternators and batteries. Of course belts and brake pads. Shocks, and of course filters and all that stuff. The only things that hag broke are the overdrive shifting gear. I'm not sure what the correct name for the part is. The shifter linkage. It had a plastic type connection at the transmission. I drilled it and made a different type of connection that has lasted for about 290,000 miles now. And the sun roof gears went bad. Other than that it has been a fine truck. But I do think it is leaking a little when it rains a lot. When I get in it on the morning. I notice there is heavy moisture on the inside of my windshield. More than any time in the past. So in closing. It has been a great truck for me.

My 2001 5.4 triton F-150 XLT has 365000 miles on it and I still have factory hoses and belts on it. No knocks, no pings, just the smell of burning tires. I replaced the coil packs once, plugs 5, oil every 3000. Been a good ol girl

@trevorshark16 abound quite a few trucks of different makes and Brands mostly Fords though, and I got to tell you that 5.4 Triton in that 2001 is probably going to be my best truck ever. It doesn't have as much top in and get up as the 5.3 LS motor that Chevys got, but Ford's got a whole lot more torque and pulling power. My Silverado has an LS motor and it will flat get up and walk, but my 5.4 triton can tow a loaded car hauler like there is nothing back there. I had a 20' Blazer that would start dancing cause it was pulled so easy. I did have to sink $1500 in a complete tranny overhaul and reman torque converter Assy from so many whining hyway miles right at 300000, so worth it

I have a 2006 P71 with 300k plus. The only time I hear any kind of rattle, is when I’ve just changed my oil and it goes away within a sec after the first start up. Never does this any other time. I will perform maintenance on it regardless will full timing job later down the road as preventative maintenance.

A true testament to their durability! Police cars spend most of their lives at idle, which is much harder on the engine than running at highway speeds. Keep that beast on the road, and keep up with routine maintenance and stuff like this will never happen to you.

I went to a dealership to buy a truck few years ago . The one I wanted was a Nissan Titan that was advertised. It was sold already . The salesman offered to sell me a ford . My response was “ if I wanted a ford , I would have gone to the ford dealership” Went to another Nissan dealership bought Titan . End of story . By the way , I bought 3 so far since 2008 and never had any of the above mentioned issues. Drive the 2008 and 2013 to 135,000 miles , Have a 2018 now with just 100,000 miles . Non of that weird noise at start up .

Happened to me because I didn't know better. Cost me at 99,000 miles to get a new engine. Always been a Ford man and I expected the 5.4 to last like my last Ford which I donated to charity still running great at 350,000 miles. I just wanted a new truck. Ford doesn't make them like they use to. Currently still driving a 99' supersets 7.3 and running flawlessly and will drive it till the wheels fall off.

2 things I see Gere aside from the obvious damage. The owner does not change the oil properly. Going way too long on the intervals. Also I'd believe they are using conventional oil. I had a 2007 Silverado 4.8 that I bought new snd it developed an oil pan gasket leak at 100k miles. I had used 10w30 Pennzoil Synthetic from new. Pulled the pan and it was absolutely CLEAN. No nasty dark varnish like this engine has. I changed the oil every 3-5k miles.

Ok for all the Chevy vs ford posts lol I owned a used car lot and sold hundreds of fords and Chevy. Here is what found Ford 5.4 1997 up until 2005 or 2006 or when ever they changed can’t remember the year. But these engines were built like a tank. I say f150 and expeditions with over 300k miles that ran like it was brand new. Sold probably 200 of the expeditions and f150 and never had a motor problem. Only problem I ever saw was AC actuator, the part that controls the air switching from front vents to defrost. I saw that problem a few times. It was a 20 dollar part that was a nightmare to replace. Had to pull the dash a few times and a few times we could reach it other ways Chevy the LS v8 from 1998-2005 were just a beast. Same as the ford 5.4 saw them with 300k miles and ran like new. The Chevy LS 8.1 was one of the most amazing motors but it got 8city and 11 hwy in a suburban lol but it could pull anything that the frame could handle in a 2500. I guess my point is died and Chevy both had great v8 motors back in these years. But when ford changed to the 5.4 that had the spark plug problem with them breaking when changing the plugs that was probably the beginning of the end from what I have seen for ford v8 being built to run 300k miles with no problems. As far as Chevy I know starting in 2007 the 5.3ls had a problem with the variable timing, they used to save gas mileage, where the cylinders with shut down. That was a nightmare. But the 6.0ls up until 2010 are perfect motors. I sold my car lot in 2012 so that’s the years that I have bought amd sold hundreds of each suv and truck with the ford and Chevy v8. I also remember the ford had a option for a 4.6L v8 in expeditions, and I’m sure the trucks but that motor was not built like the 5.4. I saw them wore out many times. Hope this helps someone. I know they are older years but they are still great motors

Attempted this but bank 1 cam is broke clean in half and 3 followers are completely gone. Ordered a reman from jasper with a warranty. 455,xxx miles isnt worth risking. Video is spot on though! ❤ Very informative and confirmed my suspicions. Every oil gally is clogged and it probably never got oil changes. 😢 I will definitely be using full synthetic and be doing oil changes at every 3k miles still. ❤ maintenance is key!

I feel like with how that engine is built, in most of the US where someone is going to be driving that significantly underpowered truck, replacing the engine is going to cost less than repairing that leaking tensioner, because of man hours.

I recently rode with a coworker in her husband’s truck with a 5.4 3V. On startup, it rattled LOUD until she backed out the spot and every time she stopped at a red light the oil pressure “gauge” would drop to zero and sound a warning. “Oh he says it’s just a sensor, the dealer wanted like 3k to fix and it runs fine.” Shudder.

Yes, and it's not like it isn't planned ahead of time in 'design'. Want to ignore service work? "Just so happens" that if you don't obey your vehicle soon enough, there will be serious consequences. "Coincidentally", this also "happens" to create profit. "Happy accident", right? Sure, just like income tax is OR restaurants charging a mandatory 20-24% "tip" - w/o you knowing beforehand, after you've already eaten the meal. Gimme a 'like' if you're tired of this sht!
