The 944 Turbo is one of those unique and obscure cars that has always caught my eye but I never fully appreciated until I bought this one. I am excited to share my experience with this car and it will be hitting the auction block soon on bring a trailer!
The For the 1986 model year, Porsche introduced the 944 Turbo, known internally as the 951. The Turbo had a turbocharged and intercooled version of the standard 944. The Turbo was the first Porsche production car utilising a ceramic port liner to retain exhaust gas temperature along with new forged pistons and was also the first vehicle to produce an identical power output with or without a catalytic converter. The Turbo also featured several other changes, such as improved aerodynamics, notably an integrated front bumper. This featured the widest turn signals (indicators) fitted to any production car, a strengthened gearbox with a different final drive ratio, standard external oil coolers for both the engine and transmission, standard 16 inch wheels (optional forged Fuchs wheels), and a slightly stiffer suspension (progressive springs) to handle the extra weight. The Turbo's front and rear brakes were borrowed from the 911. This car is very cool and lots of fun to look at and drive.
The 944 turbo is a emerging collectible sports car and a very smart purchase for someone looking to start or add to your Porsche Collection! For my money makers and wheel shakers the 944 Turbo is one to have!

IMO car investors who don't enjoy their cars and just park them up are ruining the car market for real enthusiasts, along with car flippers, pushing value's of cars out of reach for most people, these cars are designed to be used and enjoyed!

The Turbo S is a significant improvement over the standard turbo. Plus, for the US market, there's under 5000 car produced---so it's scarce, especially for a real good one. Plus, many people complain about the turbo lag. IF you're driving the car aggressively and especially with the turbo S, it's virtually non-existent especially if you know how to drive the car. I have a 1989 Turbo (all '89's had the S specs) with low miles (54K) and I've had the car for over 25 years. The car is a blast and in the right situations, still competitive with newer more powerful machinery of today---especially in the 80-120 mph range. IF you have to have the best, try to get an 88 Turbo S or any 1989 model. Look for an unmolested fully original car

You have a button on center console to toggle the functionality of that mirror joystick to adjust pasenger side mirror. Antenna shouldn't be there, it should be in the windshield, SEKURIT windshields are available and not particularly expensive, but you need to find a shopt that knows how to install post 85.5 windshield, it suppose to have external rubber seal. Also the speakers at the top of your doors don't look original.

I bought a 1988 944 after I graduated from college back in 1994. It had 44k miles on it, and it was in immaculate condition. I miss that car, as it handled better than any other car I've ever owned, and I've owned a CTS-V, a 500SL convertible, a 600SL convertible, and a 911 S4. I wish I kept it and gave it to my oldest kid. He now has my old 2003 500SL AMG, which is much faster, but not as cool.

You basically have my car! Drive the damn thing. Keep it low mileage, of course---but drive it. Unless you have it in an extreme climate controlled setting---the car will start to cause more problems than it's worth if you don't put at least 1-2K miles on it per year. I take mine out at least once a month for a 25-50 mile blast. Car is so involving, it's like riding a motorcycle. Watch the understeer though. The car MUST be turned with the wheel, especially as the speed you're driving increases

Great video. I own a 944 S2 for 3,5 years now. In my opinion the 3 l S2 engine is the best machine in the 944. it has 211 hp instead of 220 of the turbo. You can’t get an afford of the 9 extra hp but you had a turbo lag instead. But it’s such an enjoyable car because of the transaxle 👌👌

( Read NO TURBO LAG) gets out fast and the torque is up from 151 ft'lbs to 181 at 3000 rpm Also put in the European throttle cam for linear Throttle response. @@Liveartdriven Fair enough. I appear a little harsh but am somewhat defensive about these cars and view them as highly under respected in general and certainly within Porsche circles. The stock '86 turbo was good for the day and won many magazine comparisons back then. When they bumped the hp/tq to approx 250bhp/tq in the following models and made some modifications it was a better car still. Not too many late 80's cars that could do a legit 160mph. Not to mention medium and high speed cornering. Add some modern mods to one of these and they really become a giant killer. Many examples of 3ltr + putting out 500whp nowadays. Plenty enough to scare modern GT3s on the racetrack. Oh...they made these 951s into the early 90's too.

I have an 88 Turbo, no ABS on that either. In europe it was optional up to I think 89. 944s never had airbags in europe either, didnt come until the 968. The bad bit with the 86 is it has different front controlarms, spindels, rotors and hubs compared to all other cars

Wait. Ugly headlights and hard to work moonroof? Those are the two best features outside of driving.

Well, it finally happened! My Old 86 944 turbo- Vette- Mustang killer is finally getting the respect it deserves! I Liked your review Nick, just an FYI- the alarm was optional, my car doesn’t have it. I also have power mirrors, both sides! I’m not sure 13,000 turbo models over 4 years imported to the US qualifies as make a bunch of them though. U only left out a few important things. Only production car for Decades, balanced absolutely perfect 50/50. handling is incredible! Huge Brembo brakes, decades before any American manufacturers even knew what the Hell a Brembo was! Real tuning- computer controlled turbo KLR and engine! 100 real horse power-and an 800 rpm increase to redline by tuning alone! In 1988, I added a K26#8 turbo Porsche cup-racing head gasket, and ARP studs. I blew the doors off every last Porsche on that track. Corvette club versus Porsche club track day in the 80s. Was a pathetic JOKE! You could run a 951 around the track all day. I didn’t know what brake trade was! Until I drove one of the Vettes more then 2 laps! 951s are race cars that it just so happens u can drive on the street. If your lucky enough to get one, hope it has the sport seats, they are as good as any racing seat and are simply beautiful to look at.

great job on the video. I remember when I grew up. we called this "the poor mans Porsche". Great deals still on the internet, can find a decent one for 10K, and not so decent ones as low as 5K. But don't you think the Porsche 928 is a much better bang for the buck?

There is a switch in the middle console were you can choose which side mirror you want to adjust. No one needs to step out of the car for that. its all electronic :D

Dude that's my car ! Seriously. Bought it off BAT. Always allow pop-ups. The Boston Acoustics speakers are gouged into the door cards but I don't care. Mirrors adjust just fine Awesome car to drive. Had an 83 944 , but always wanted the Turbo. Got it

Some things are wrong, ie the mirrors, and the clutch for example. Mirrors have a switch in the center console to switch sides and if the clutch is heavy you have a problem

First of all, you don't say pop-up headlights are ugly. Ever. Second of all, the passenger mirror is operated electronically also, by the same button as the driver's. You just need to flip the switch at the center console. If that is not the case, it has been messed with. You absolutely don't adjust the mirror from outside.

Guess i fucked up big time. Had an 86 951 turbo. Got it for $2700 in 2011. Ran like a dream. Started leaking from the main seal, timing belt was old, I freaked out, sold it for $3000. Now I have a 335i and a Tesla. Wish I kept the 951 as a weekend car.

Look, this car is 36 years old! The changes in cars during that period are monumental. It's a classic, so don't bitch about the little things. It's not a DeLorean or a Ferrari. i.e., it runs and provides pleasure. You want full power mirrors? Buy a contemporary car.
