It's because of all the spraying they're doing. The crooks won't stop spraying! They're killing butterflies too.

It really breaks my heart to know that these fireflies are going extinct! I was young and would go outside to catch and release them. I would wait until it started to get dark and lots of fireflies would come up from the ground and light up the night sky they were so beautiful! Now that I'm grown over the years I started to wonder where they were at and I hate for it to be this answer to my question! 🥺

They've sprayed them close to extinction. The counties say they spray for mosquitoes only which is bs. They're the ones killing all the insects.

It's really sad. I have not seen any fireflies in the pass few years. As well as, June bugs also. This year there are very few love bugs also.

I’m so glad I got to see lightening bugs this year in South Carolina,so beautiful. It was on my bucket list to see those amazing insects of light!

As a kid in the south I use to see them everywhere at dusk, they just started popping off in all directions, we use to catch them by the dozens. Im still in the south, I dont see them anymore. Not one. Now that I think of it have not seen one in years.

I haven't seen them since I was a lad. It's rather heartbreaking that both populations of fireflies and mourning doves have reduced drastically; both iconic in our childhood memories. The old world is almost dead, and this new world is void of mercy.

Usually fireflies come out in my zone at around this time of year but I've seen none so far which is pretty upsetting.

I HAVE NOT SEEN LIGHTENING BUS FOR YEARS NOW... WE USED TO COLLECT THEM AS KIDS AND PUT THEM IN BOTTLES WITH HOLES IN THE LIDS TO MAKE LANTERNS. ALSO, JUNE BUGS ARE ALMOST NON EXISTANT ANYMORE.

The counties are spraying them. They say they're spraying for mosquitoes, but it kills lightning bugs too. Some counties spray from the air as well. The counties/states are killing off all the insects.

Haven't seen one where I am (outskirts of a city) edit: I used to see them in plain fields near the same city when I was young around 7-10? But I did see 3 or 5 when I was a the country side about two years ago, it was really beautiful and unrealist..

... mosquito control, the quick answer is mosquito control, you ever wondered why it seems like when the mosquitoe control guy passes with that horrible smelling junk, why it doesn't seem to effect mosquitoes in the least, it's because the mosquitos are like, "you can keep spraying that stupid sht all you want, it doesn't bother us, the only thing you're doing is killing off lightning bugs, haha"...

You are so right!!!!!!!! Every year I fill out a form to stop the county from spraying my place. I have a few lightning bugs this year. But as soon as those criminals spray other yards, that will be the end of the lightning bugs. It's being done on purpose, for money. Always the money.

this is so sad, they're literally harmless and a magical creature! and they're completely in decline, while we're all wishing that mosquitos should go extinct, they're literally dividing even more!

The mosquito spray is killing all insects, lightning bugs included. Call/email your county or township. Tell them to take you off their stinkin spray list! It's all about the money.

Them darling little insects bugs. They formed up part my childhood. always catching them, playing with them, letting them crawl across my arm then releasing them back again, free. I was left wondering why I don't see much anymore. :'''c I miss them friendly bugs smoochies. A part of my childhood and friends are going extinct. 😢

Call your county, email your county. Tell them to put you on the do not spray list. They say they're spraying mosquitoes, but they're spraying all insects, lightning bugs included.

How do i do the opposite of this? I have a bearded dragon and fireflies are deadly to them. How can i keep them away?

Here in western pa, there were barely any for a couple of years, then last year ('23) there was a little more & theres a lot this year ('24) again 🤍

That is so good to hear!!!!!!!!!!! Thanks for posting this. We're in Ohio. The counties spray for "mosquitoes" here. But their stinkin spray kills all insects, lightning bugs included. We get on the 'do not spray' list every year. I've seen a few lightning bugs this year.
