The Ferrari 458 was a game changer when it was released. The 458, which replaced the Ferrari F430, took such huge leaps forward that it's still unreal comparing the F430 to the 458. The F430 replaced the Ferrari 360 which is where this story starts.
The Ferrari 360 was the very first all-aluminum space frame chassis vehicle Ferrari had ever made for the public. It was a strong partnership with American based Aluminum titan, Alcoa. The Ferrari 360 was larger than the Ferrari F355 it replaced, but was still 25% lighter, and 40% stronger than the steel chassis vehicles Ferrari used to make. The 360 was the beginning of all-aluminum space frame chassis for Ferrari.
The F430 took what the 360 accomplished and improved on it drastically in the power and performance department, while using the same Alcoa developed chassis from the Ferrari 360. Although the roofline, the windows, and the doors were directly from the 360, the Ferrari F430 looked significantly different. And the new design improved the aerodynamics and drag coefficient over the 360.
It's now 2010 and Ferrari blows the world away with the Ferrari 458 italia. The 458 was brand new from the ground up. Ferrari and Alcoa had experimented and figured out the all-aluminum chassis game and were ready to push that envelope as far as they could with the Ferrari 458 italia. The car was a HUGE departure from the 360 and the F430. The engine, the design, the sound, and that feel... so good it hurt! I just bought my 4th 458 (1st 2 were coupes, 3rd was Spyder). Why would you keep going back to it you might ask? I keep thinking there's something better out there and I start to miss the 458. I'm hoping I keep this new one for the rest of my life but I've learned from experience to never say never 😊. IMHO the 458 will go down as one of the best cars to ever come out of Maranello.

I’d love to be able to have the income to afford one without it affecting my finances. However I still wouldn’t get one since I wouldn’t want that attention. I can get the just as much or more thrills for cheaper getting the Ducati bike I want and still have an exotic Italian machine.

I just drove a 458 through the hills around Maranello. It was an unforgettable experience and I’ve never felt anything like it. Unfortunately, I will probably never have enough money to buy one, and if I ever do, they’ll be getting resold for 3x their original value. However, I now get to say I drove a real Ferrari where Ferrari drove his Ferraris.

It took me 6 months to find mine. 2015 tdf blue spider with 6000 miles. Got it in 2020. Now, it has 13,000. Debated a long time between 458 and 488. I think I made the right choice.

The only advantage of a 458 Italia (=Coupé) is that it has a slightyly stiffer chassis and that the engine can be seen both from the inside through a review window and from outside through a kind of "shopping window". Even if you buy for the Spider that Capristo hood with a window in it, it is not more than a bull's eye with almost no view on the engine because the engine is more forward, hidden under the hood of the retractable hardtop. But the Spider doesn't wiggle and wobble, it is rigid enough to enjoy hard driving. And you get the sound unfiltered. In sunshine through the complete open roof, in cloudy weather through the rear window that can be rolled down. So you can get over the loss of the view on the engine. That's why I bought a 458 Spider and not an Italia.

Sure you can add a clear cover, but for some (me included) the Italia just looks better...plus I'm just not a convertible guy so I went with the Italia. It's good we have choices.

Your excellent presentation tells me that you love the 458. IMO it is not quite perfect. To me the front view is just a bit aggressive. Not to worry. If I could bring myself to sell my 328 I would buy one. Am 74 now with limp. Can't see it happening. Not to worry. Cheers from Kiwiland.

Love the 458 Italia the best. With coupe you can see the engine under a large glass window. Can't see this work of art engine in the spyder and if you buy the aftermarket "window" it's a very small piece of glass with hardly any engine visual. Both 458s def future collectibles!!!!

the spider loses quite a bit of rigidity and the beautiful engine view. But you get the two humps and the intoxicating engine sound, so it's perfect for cruising in socal. And no the f1 single clutch gear box is not "shitty", it's crazy awesome on my scud. The 458 has one of the best feeling dual clutches ever, but for raw savagery u cant beat the f1 superfast gearbox. I own and love them both, 5 years and counting! the equity appreciation was quite insane

Great review - Dave what is your opinion of selling my 720s Spider $404 MSRP and replacing with 458? I want to have an exotic to drive and keep to pass on to my kids. I’m actually partial to the coupe because it displays the engine and one less thing to go bad in future (too mechanism) - I have a convertible Z06 on order too!

Arvind I think swapping the 720s for a 458 is not a bad idea at all. So long as we're being realistic about the performance downgrade, then it's all fair game. the 458 was ground breaking for Ferrari when it came out and I think it's even more important now. Think of it like this... from the 458, we jumped to the 488 and lost the NA engine for a TT power plant, and the next in line is the 296 which is a V6 TT Hybrid. I'm not counting the F8 as it was a tribute made for 2 years. So between each model change, we went from NA V8, to TT V8, to now a V6 TT Hybrid. That progression is insanely fast and it makes the 10 year old 458 a gem in the lineup, but it's not so old that it looks outdated or not as exotic. Sure its not as flamboyant as an F8, but it is just beautiful all around. I think the 458 will go down as one of the most timeless Ferraris just like the F355. Regarding the 720s - if you are certain you'll be selling soon, sell it as soon as possible. The highline market is on its way down. And thank you so much for watching, appreciate you Arvind!

The Speciale 458 is the limited production model of the 458 however the price of the Speciale is now over $500,000 and it will only go up further since it was made for 1.5 years as opposed to the regular 458 which was mass produced from 2010 though 2015. Clearly an investment.

Hey John, so cool that the Turbo S is specifically the car you thought of for the 2.5 second comment because that's exactly the car I had in mind when I made the comment. I'm a huge Porsche fan and we sell a good amount of them. The 992 Turbo S is one of the first videos we recorded (Shameless plug: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/hNiRjcxm0bPKpWg.html ) and although I've always loved the legendary 911 Turbo, I always find myself chasing their GT cars which are technically slower 0-60, 0-100 pulls, but are much much more fun in my opinion. @@StudioMotors yep I had a allocation for the 992 gt3 and gave it up since my brother has one already and the other brother has the 991.2 gt3rs and I am driving those on occasion. Just I'm getting tired of Porsche from being around them so often. Need to make the step up to Ferrari, too bad they stopped production of F8, best looking car they had. Maybe a Pista variant is released. I will draw a bee line to the tailor made department for that. then put 100k miles on the car.

They are all sick as tits! 💯 You will have every chick in town turning heads in any of them! Also many believe these are soon to skyrocket in price due to the end of fuel cars coming closer. Those Porsche in the garage would make an excellent option in the Ferrari is out of your price range. I believe the Porsche 911 996 model is the best bang for your buck if you want a bargain as it's less desirable to collectors for some odd reasons but still an excellent drivers car! 💯

Great video. However, i think you would appreciate my correction here. The 488 price is also going up. Basically all used car prices are going up - all sports cars are up by 30-40k. My 488 is up 30k from May and now are trading in the mid 300s for the spider models. The 458 is a great car (owned it in 2020) but as of today it still doesn’t exceed the 488 price.

I have a 458 Spider and love it, specifically the drive train. However, the electronics are very dated and extremely tiresome to deal with. The stereo is abysmal and tightly integrated into the controls. Impossible to rectify.

Many people are lost on what driving experience means.. I think they are also lost on how much more fun a single clutch automated manual transmission is to drive over a dual clutch..In time everyone will realize just how much fun NA cars were. Especially cars like the 430 with the single clutch auto manual. The 458 is the last of the great NA V8'S, but the 430 was the last of the NA V8's with the single clutch.

I live in Vegas and to us it looks like a rental car. Still a nice car but....lol.

Man I hate your comment but LOVE the username. I saw him live at one of the Nocturnals years and years ago. He performed with a broken arm and killed the set. We ended up chillin after his set, awesome dude. Anyway, we're based in LA so I hear you on the rental comment but that dosn't, or shouldn't, take away from what the car is.
