Suckamaniacs!!!! Uncle Ben Eller here is back with a brand new installment of This Is Why You Suck at Guitar! I get dozens of emails and telepathic dream messages every week from fans all over the world who are in a world of pain from trying to change tunings and string gauges on their Floyd Rose /Ibanez Edge / Lo Pro Edge tremolos... and i can't blame them! I remember the first floating bridge guitar i ever messed with, it was my brother's Ibanez EX Series... i was trying to tune down a half step to play along to the Metallica Load and Reload records (.... yeah.), and i just couldn't figure it out! By the time i got the low strings tuned down, the high strings were WAY sharp, then when i tuned them down, the low strings had jumped up to standard pitch again... what a nightmare. I actually sold my soul to the devil in order to finally get the tuning changed over... boy do i ever regret that move now! It was years later that i stumbled across this awesome trick for changing the tuning on a Floyd-Equipped guitar. I'm going to save you a LOT of time and frustration, not even to mention your immortal soul. You just may need that later.
You just need a couple simple tools and some knowledge of the crazy seesaw-like effect that your strings and springs have. You'll learn about blocking your bridge (from both sides!), adjusting the claw screw tension, the famous Whoopi Goldberg, and the aftereffects of messing with your tuning and string gauge. Its all super fast and easy once you learn the basic principles of how to do this. Its all reversible, it doesn't harm anything, and if you follow my steps, you'll have great success. Huzzah!!!!
The guitar i'm working on is my 1987 Ibanez RG550 Fallout finish, with custom pick guard and pickups by Instrumental Pickups (Decomp HS set).
Thanks so much for watching, let me know how it goes for you!!! Cheers!

I have heard so many horrible stories about tuning a guitar with a floyd rose style floating bridge. The guy at the guitar store even said how difficult it was going to be and that I should buy an easier guitar. With your video, you have made it so easy to tune and fine tune my guitar that I am back in love with playing it everyday now! I go from standard to Drop C tuning without worry! The coin method is so easy to do! Now, the tuning is perfect again, no matter what tuning I choose! You sir, have given my Ibanez Floyd Rose guitar a reason to live again! Brilliant video. Easy to follow, easy to understand, and makes tuning my floyd rose a joy instead of a nerve racking chore that no one wants to undertake! My guitar thanks you!

Let's say I want to change the string gauge to a 10-46 and tune from Standard to DGCFAd. From the points of your video, where should I start off? EDIT: nvm, managed to do it somehow after some trials and errors. Thank you very much for this video!

mrdrastic I need help!! Muy guitar is a 6 string but is configured like a 7 without the first one, it has .13 strings...and the guitar is tuned in B soo I need to get the guitar to .10 and to standard tuning. Do I first do the config that he shows for going to lighter strings and then do the one to tune up or how? When I change the string gauge to a lighter one I don't have to do the tuning he does after right?

you need an entire setup. You might be ok with the same nut.. but if possible you should change the nut. Open the back of the guitar and screw the spring screws out a few turns. now turn the fine tuning screws til theyre close to in the middle of their range. Remove the springs and replace the strings with .10s. replace the strings. with the neck stringlocks LOOSe you need to get it CLOSE to standard tuning. watch the tremolo block. you need to adjust the spring screws so the tremolo is FLAT while its tuned CLOSE to standard tuning. Maybe a note off at most. Once you have it flat with the strings close to in tune... youre done with the screws. now tune it with the tuners. i suggest slightly overtuning at first on the heavier strings.. like a sharp instead of the actual note. then the smaller strings (this is just to save a little time). as you raise tension on each string the strings youve already tuned will go flat and drop notes. THIS is the part thats a pain. Once it's VERY close to in tune tighten the stringlocks on the neck. now tune with the fine tuners on the bridge

Bought my first floyd rose equipped guitar, ever(been playing badly for 22 yrs), and spent 2 hours last night in a sisyphean hell of tuning & re-tuning, without even blocking the tremolo first. I had seen your vid come up in my search, but did not watch it at first due to it being 29:43 long....Big mistake! Yours is hands down, the best on youtube(wasted 4 hours watching other vids), and on the 3rd day of owning my first floyd rose guitar, its finally in tune! Thank you, Ben!!

i followed all the steps, i blocked the bridge and tuned it with the bridge sitting properly... but as soon as i take the block out the bridge sinks and it goes out of tune which is fine but when i adjust the 2 screws in the back and get it in tune the bridge does not sit straight.. it sinks way into the body. I am so close to selling my floyd rose guitars, quitting guitar and maybe even sell my house and move into a caravan and go vegan, thats how much i hate floyds right now

This makes me appreciate the genius of the Steinberger R-Trem design. It's exactly the same fundamental idea but there's a built-in lock on the bridge and a large knurled screw you turn with your fingers rather than tightening those fiddly claw screws (probably chewing them up over time). No nut to lock. No tools needed. Worth checking out IMO

step 1 - cry step 2 - cry some more really though, the trick when tuning higher is to tune the E-A-D strings 1 step sharp, G a half step sharp then B and E normally. negates just about all of the issues of the other strings going flat as you tune the rest of them

Sevs217 The fine tuners at the bridge can be tightened or loosened. I'm trying to break it down for the new guys too so bear with me. Tighten the fine tuners all the way down till it locks. Then loosen the fine tuners while counting how many turns it goes. Let's say you can turn it counter clockwise 20 times. Then tighten it 10 times. You're now in the middle of the fine tuning spectrum. This should be done when you're restringing but not exactly necessary.

im confused, dont you need to add tension (heavier strings) when tuning lower? which side of the trem do you block in this case?
@JGAbstract
@JGAbstract 4 жыл бұрын
I was confused by that too, but then I realized he meant "adding lighter strings OR drop tuning." Adding lighter strings means you're lowering the tension from the strings side causing the trem to tilt towards the back.. Because the strings are thinner. Likewise, if you're lowering your tuning, you're by definition lowering the tension from the strings so the trem will tilt towards the back springs as well. Generally, you use thicker strings to compensate for the lack of tension from down tuning, but that's not what he's talking about. Things that will cause your bridge to tilt back: lessening the tension from the strings - either from lowering your tuning, or from getting lighter strings. 25:45 he tells you where to block the trem if you're going to lessen the string tension (lower your tuning).

Mike G, my thoughts exactly. I want to go from 10 strings and E tuning to 11 strings and D standard (whole step lower). Seems like it may be an even balanced swap. I’m having to lower the tension so much on the back I feel the screws may come all the way out!
@MrKoolaidjam
@MrKoolaidjam 4 жыл бұрын
@@ulver7556 What did you end up doing out of curiosity? I would assume the added tensions of the strings from going to 11s from 10s would slightly be cancelled out by the fact that you're going down in tuning therefore taking away from tension

Why Can't I Think Of A Name? I first put on EB 11-48’s with the D tuning. The claw screws were out way to far in my opinion to balance the bridge. After some research, I realized those strings were meant for Gibson scale necks. My guitar’s neck is 25.5 scale. I ended up putting on D’Addario’s NYXL 11-56 strings. They’re perfect! beefier low strings have more tension to counter the springs. Claw screws are in a better position now, and the string buzz I had on the fifth string went away. 😅

Tried this method last week, it was my first time with a floyd, with an old 90s Jackson I recently got off ebay. I was changing tuning AND string gauge, meaning I didn't know whether the overall string tension would increase or decrease. So I blocked the bridge from moving both up and down, by inserting the removed backplate under the finetuning screws, and then putting a stacked 9v battery and penny inside the back - together they held the bridge perfectly in place. Changed the strings, gave them a good stretch and tuned up, locked the nut, unblocked the bridge and everything went wild, but sure enough as soon as I adjusted the screws in the back everything came perfect. It really wasn't difficult at all. I've seen other videos of people going round and round tuning and re-tuning having not blocked the bridge and it seems ridiculous.
