Composing in relation to the subject, or at scales, that mitigates against immediate recognition of the subject.

Also, and this is kind of cheating, I'll use the background mask in lightroom to slightly desaturate or change the background so that the subject contrasts a little more.

My tip is do the opposite. When everybody were taking with a rich collection of Long exposure photos, everythign you can imagine, light trails from traffic, light painting from attractions of the amusement park, it is lot of the same this is where i applied with super short photo using 1/24000 of the second exposure of a fountain. this is how i froze the water and it is splashes in a single moment in time. My photo was immediately visible compared to others....

I strongly prefer to take photos of animals that are doing something, as opposed to just sitting there. For example, a green heron that is walking or fishing makes for an interesting subject. Those gangly feet and toes seem to project a personality all by themselves.

True, case in point, over the weekend I was in the NC Smokies shooting elk. A lady was trying to capture a bull elk 200 yards away and there was a young male elk 15 feet behind her. When I got her attention she almost crapped her pants.

This is especially true when shooting sunsets. I was at the Grand Canyon one time and all of the tourists were photographing the sun on the horizon and no one turned around to see the warm glow hitting the those beautiful layered cliffs.....except me. Of course get the sunset shot but then turn around and see what it's illuminating. Also wait until about 15 minutes to an hour after sunset for what the "twilight's last gleaming" rays are doing in the atmosphere. Distant mountain peaks 500-1000 miles away can create some great post sunset effects across the sky.

Not only the photography tips are something to learn from but also the structure of the videos. A short definition of the problem, a quick overview why it's beneficial to watch and the promise of a bonus tip which makes it feel more rewarding to watch until the end. Tip #1: Get the Shot. As soon as you see something aim and shoot! Then, time permitting and IF the shot is still there, work the scene. Your reflexes will be to aim the camera and push the shutter button, not recompose your body to avoid an eye-level shot. So be it. If it's sports or wildlife or, my favorite, weddings, you'll be lucky if you have time to get a second shot much less reposition for a better angle. Birds fly, ring-bearers trip, runners cross the finish line - there's no saying, "I missed that. Can you do it again?" GET the shot. THEN work for a better capture.

Learning about the modern landscape of photography, social media specifically, has made me realise that i just want to take photos for myself. Going for walk, enjoying the technical aspects of photography, and maybe getting a nice picture that i can then have fun editing. Think ill keep it a hobby and leave the business to the pros :)

I agree with every point except for the smart phone. I try to explain to people - smart phones don't have a fixed orientation, you can turn them horizontally. But people make films on their phones held vertically as if they're making a phone call! Somebody for example films a car that they can see clearly but they don't think about the viewer. They can see the whole car for real but the viewer can only see the car door and the two black bars either side of the picture on their TV or computer monitor. It also works for smart phone viewing, not just TV and computers. Turn your phone horizontally and the phone will switch to horizonal automatically. You will be able to see your panoramic picture across your smart phone. It's also great for watching movies!

Thanks for the tips! If I could, I'd also add an extra tip for everyone, especially beginners as myself - never stop experimenting! Even if you feel like you took a great shot following intuition or professional tips, take some more with different camera settings, angle, composition etc. Doing something different without overthinking about the final result you can get really interesting shots. They might not pass your quality standards, but I bet you can learn something new from those experimental shots and use that in the future.

Great tip. Allow me to expound on that; don't hesitate to just take shots in general. When I went for my one and only real photo walk so far earlier this year, I was about to leave the park because it started raining and it was about time to leave anyway. I saw some crows sitting in a field and a tree and thought "eh they're just crows, eh they're not doing anything interesting, eh they'll probably fly away when I move closer, eh it's raining on my camera..." But I decided to do it anyway, I walked through the field and took some shots. When reviewing them later, I was stunned to see how one of them came out; it was far and away my best shot of the whole day, and remains one of my favorites. The raindrops are frozen in the air, you can see the water on the feathers of the crow, he's holding his head at a neat angle, the background is beautifully blurred... and I almost didn't bother. Long story short... just take the photos if you have even a slight inclination to do so!

Great tips Simon. Thanks for sharing. I would add, for wildlife photography, to capture the creature doing something interesting. While a warbler on a perfectly framed branch can be a stellar shot, if that same bird had a large caterpillar in its beak, you have a winner. A large buck deer in a field is a majestic creature but if there is a doe out of focus in the background, now the viewer knows why that buck was there. You mentioned it but capturing some of the creature’s environment also helps an otherwise boring shot to become a story. I try to look at my photos through the eyes of someone who has never seen that creature before. If I include some of the environment, the viewer knows where it lives, and may wonder how it survives. A heron on the water is cool but showing some of the cattails or shoreline now the viewer knows that creature lives at water’s edge. Now, if that heron is about ready to swallow the fish it just caught the viewer knows it lives at the water’s edge and it is a mighty hunter. Great video and discussion. Thanks for sharing.

All useful tips Simon and the low perspective and also habitat (sense of place) resonate most with me. I enjoyed especially to see a glimpse into some of your landscapes, cityscapes, street photography, candid work etc showing you have effectively turned your hand to to many other aspects of photography. I have produced some effective shots holding the camera at arms length above my head to give a different and unique perspective. Finally I need to force myself into more vertical/portrait shots and I did notice this from you where you post just as many or more in this format than landscape format. We all learn and improve by sharing so thanks again Simon 👍

Another great video! The thing that helped me, was getting, in addition to a 17-55, was purchasing a 10-20 and an 70-200. Several times, I took a 6 foot later with me to a shoot. In one instance, I carried a ladder to a shoot of a Hair Salon and with my wide angle (and HDR) took a photo of the whole room that the owner just loved. Also, in group shots, it helps me with a smaller ladder to elevate the camera slightly. Of course, I took additional photos blurring the backgrounds, etc. I used some reflectors to fill in the corners of the room with a fill in flash. Amazing what you can do if you just "fool around" and try to be creative. The six-foot ladder certainly helped when I was photographing a sunflower field where the flowers were taller than me!

One of the best pieces of advice that I recently heard in a video (unfortunately can't remember who said it) was that in order to figure out what type of photographer you want to be, always consider the question "What if I didn't have a camera with me right now, would I still enjoy being here and looking at this?" I find that this is invaluable advice for beginners who are trying to figure what even to photograph because this is where the limits of imitating others come into play. Types of situations that might excite my favorite photographers might not excite me, regardless of how much I abstractly understand the satisfaction of nailing that shot of a snow owl (your snow owl shot is just absolutely perfect btw), or the excitement of getting good dancefloor shots in an event shooting, or architecture etc etc etc. I do unterstand it, but I'd be bored out of my mind in those situations. I wouldn't enjoy myself and I wouldn't enjoy looking at any of those things if I didn't have a camera on me. So this is the advice I'd give to my fellow beginners: Figure out what situations you would enjoy even without a camera, then take a camera into those situations. Don't count on the act of photography to make a situation or subject interesting that is otherwise not interesting to you. You won't find anthing interesting in it beyond the technical challenge (which can of course also be worthwhile, if only to get practice and figure out camera handling etc).

This is a great collection of tips on storytelling via composition. When out shooting I always keep the storytelling strategy used in cinematography in mind: wide shot to establish the new scene; medium shots to show how the “actors” relate to the scene; close-ups of their action, and “over the shoulder” cutaways to show the scene / action from their point of view using the composition techniques you suggest here. Most often in photojournalism it is the close-ups of the action which catch the eye and get taken first, then the other points-of-view to provide context and reveal the underlying story in an interesting way. Your tips on using foreground and side elements for framing have the same effect of pulling the eye of the view past the context to better understand the focal point. I think it is a lot like telling a joke effectively in that the “punchline” needs to be set-up and things like selective focus and tonal / color contrasts are like verbal inflection used to stress what is important. When shooting people I try to find a higher vantage point to improve the lighting on the faces. Because in most situations outdoors and indoors the “key” lighting is overhead the brow will shade the eyes of the subject giving them a dull lifeless appearance. Raising the POV of the camera about 3 feet and having them look up into the camera also gets the “key” light in their eyes. The most valuable “lighting” equipment for an outdoor portrait session is a short ladder. 😊

What I love about really tight, closeup shots (especially of elephants) is how it reveals texture. I love texture in images.

Simon, Your tips are so great and this video is so valuable to me as an amateur photographer. I just love the variety of the many things individual's can do with photography. Your inspiration to all who love taking photos makes me see how vast the impact of taking and sharing great photos continues to be. Great example here using an elephant to keep your photography fresh and interesting. 😊
