I have had several hits right next to the bank for the very reason he mentioned. I reeled in the bait, decided it was time to pull it up and throw again, and just as I made the upward movement, jackpot! Bass nearly yanked the rod out of my hand. I caught a bass on a minnow looking bait made by storm that I hadn't caught a damn thing on for years. I never could get the thing to work correctly. But just when I pulled upward to remove it from the water, here he came. Shortest fight ever. Bang, hooked, out of the water.

I do this with crankbaits and sometimes get bit but in the summer when it is really hot and still, this works great on smallies in Mid TN.

Your right, as a experienced ice fisherman we’ve used that for years!

This is very true. Same reason you get bit so often when you pulling your lure up at the weed line or bringing a jig over some submerged cover.

Variability in retrieve 'actions' until they let you know, is the key, IMO.

As someone who caught 100s this winter, groups of bass will absolutely dive bomb on bait too. They just do whatever they want. However, when you have single targets, def keep it above them.

This is a good point and not just for jerkbaits as you said. I’ve caught more live scope fish pulling off the bottom or quickly over a stump than I’ve had pick it up on the fall.

I fish small rivers and creeks. I've caught some really nice smallies ripping the jerk bait up stream. I mean rip it to the point where I think maybe I shouldn't be snapping it so hard, as not to break my line. I know it sounds counter intuitive, but it works.

When fishing from the bank this is something I do with most of my baits . Difference is I’m doing it so I don’t get too deep and snagged lol Good to know this is also helping me catch fish !!
