Not only loving your general commentary and analysis, but here you are 50:50 on your two favourite songs by them, when for me, neither is even a contender for top 10. Dude... H has been one of my favorite songs for 25 years ❤ When I was a kid I heard a bootleg concert album where he introduced the song. He said "have you ever seen those cartoons where the character has to make a decision, and he has an angel pop up on one shoulder and a devil on the other. The angel's gonna try and get him to do what's good for him and the devil's going to try to get him to do what's bad. In life it's not like that, a lot of times is just friends offering you advice, trying to get you to do what's best for you but not really knowing what's best. It's up to you. you have to make your decision... this song's called H"

Tool is so esoteric about the meanings of their lyrics and such, it's always understandable when someone thinks this song is about heroin, especially if it's their first time hearing it. After hearing that this was, in fact, about his son, and the feeling of being a parent, it seems plain as day to me when I go back and read the lyrics, and listen to the sincerity and Maynard's voice. Especially, when he sings the repeating refrain of "I don't mind." The sacrifices we make for our children, however big or small, always feel like no big thing, when we see those precious smiles on their faces. Knowing, somewhere in their heart of hearts, that they are everything to us. That being said, I'm sure Maynard steadfastly employed his usual method of being just vague enough that the song could be about 10 different things.

i believe that H. is about his son. His son's birth is forcing him to look at a literal part of himself and he's being confronted with his closed heart. his child seems to provoke this need for him to be a better person, to not be fearful anymore, and that the love he feels from his son connects them on almost a spiritual level and that his son's love is "considerately killing" his ego. something like that. any fellow Toolheads want to add to this, please do.

I really lilke this interpretation. I have studied these lyrics for over 20 years and leaned toward the idea that it was about his son but could never make sense of the "considerately killing me" line. I never thought of it in the way that it could mean considerately killing his ego or his old self.. THANKS!!
@atheontimesconflux7006
@atheontimesconflux7006 Жыл бұрын
@@SMAC-wv5rw I’ve also always leaned towards the idea that the song was about Maynard’s son. When it came to the “considerately killing me” line, I personally saw that as a realization that as great as having a child is, there’s the side of it where your literally throwing your life away to raise your child and stress over wether or not they’ll grow up into someone healthy and respectable. Though ultimately it will be something nothing else comes close to, I see the line as a dark truth to the welcomed cost of your progeny. Though I do think the “considerably killing the ego” interpretation has a bit more merit.

I was 13-14 when Undertow came out. Such a pivotal time of development on your way to adulthood. I heard Sober being played in some random store at the mall, and I was immediately drawn in. That bass. Those drums. That VOICE. What a hook. I went to Sam Goody and bought the album and listened to it religiously in my bedroom. Would fall asleep to the crickets and get scared shitless when the machine message awoke me. (it wasn’t until a year later did I accidentally open the back of the jewel case only to find a cow licking his own asshole, but that’s besides the point). Imagine the pain and restlessness of 14-15-16, waiting 3 years for another album. At that time we had no internet and no clue when your favorite band would release anything. Then seemingly out of nowhere Aenima dropped and everything changed. Everything was different. Elevated, Stinkfist was played over the airways and was noticeably more complex, but progressing from Undertows sound so there was familiarity. Then Eulogy with that unique opening for the first time and then this absolute GEM of a song in H. Wasn’t like anything I had heard. Deeper, more emotional. Clear and expansive. Like some sort of soundtrack to a 16 year olds night holed up in his bedroom after school days and hockey practice. That breakdown before the explosion at the end, I wanted to every one of my friends to hear it but not sure if they would understand. After little afraid they would dismiss it as just another song so I kept it to myself. It almost wasn’t worth it to share considering how ahead of time it was to me. Pure greatness - there’s no other way to describe it and the impact it has had on me and so many others who were lucky enough to live through that time and felt the same way. Thank you Tool

Adam is just an AMAZING riff writer. He has a sense for what sticks with you, what combinations of notes and chords draw in your attention. If Danny is the beating heart of the band, and Justin is the color and mood setter with his creative take on the bottom end, Adam definitely the chief composer and is responsible for a lot of the harmonic and chordal impact the songs have, the chords that travel up your spine, so to speak!

I picture this song as the classic devil on one shoulder and angel on the other. The snake represents Maynard's past selfish self, which is being challenged by the angel on the other shoulder, or 'my blood'. This fits nicely into the song being about his son being born and necessitating a change in Maynard's priorities. Also the line, 'what's holding up is a mirror'. I love this song so much and is always my answer when someone asks about an underrated Tool song.

Phenomenal song. Was always my favorite song on my favorite album from them. Sadly, hearing this and learning this entire album when I was young, I never even stopped to ask what the lyrics meant. It's something I rarely try to do. I just can't fathom trying to decide what someone else what thinking or feeling when they created it. Without the writer saying it explicitly, I just allow songs to take on their own meaning for each listener. Cant deny though, it does seem that the more people listen to a song with together, with a similar understanding of the meaning. The more power the song gains. For me it was always about vulnerability. Giving into temptation or trying not to. Realizing you're trapped and being fine with it.

Definitely not about heroin. More about the juggling his life as a rock star and life of excess with being a father and how that changed his perspective.

It's about his relationship with his son. How he vows to be different than his relationship with his father was with him. He's killing the past, and opening up a better future. Connected. Changed.

This was the first Tool song I ever heard back in 2000 during my lunch break one day in my sophomore year of high school. I heard it while I was smoking my first joint as well. I've been a huge fan of both ever since! Great reaction!

Lyrically a masterpiece! He lays out like only Maynard can when his rockstar identity and his new identity as a father were at odds and they were considerately killing each other.

H is the middle name of Maynard's first born Devo. This song is all about not living out the sins of your father. As Maynard and his mother were abused. He sees his child for the first time and it kills all of that in him. My personal favorite song from this band.

stumbled across your channel in a mashup of Reacts to Laterlus. This was my first ever rock song I heard (after sneaking my portable walkman / radio #Fancy) and tuning into the local rock station. That was when I was 12 or so, and 24 years later this song still hits & provides new meaning. Tool has been a rock, and a lifelong companion to see me through dark days. Really glad you enjoy it, and hope to see your reactions to some of their other songs. Eon Blue Apocalypse / The Patient. Those two have carried me many a time. Edit - just got to the end, heard about your playlist for Tool reacts & The Patient is the second one on the list. Gonna watch now.

Heroin is a good interpretation to this song. As a Tool tragic I know MJK has said it's about becoming a father. As a father of 3 who has deep insecurities and difficulty with self worth this is one of the most underrated gems in Tools catalogue. This is going to be a long ass comment so either keep scrolling or buckle up The line "Whats coming through is alive. What's holding up is a mirror. What's singing songs is a snake". This line hits me like a truck. My interpretation is this. To me my children worked as a reflection of myself. To someone with poor self image they're a mirror to your inadequacy. You worry if you have what it takes to help them see themselves better than you see yourself. You wonder if either by nature or nurture you will let them down. This voice in the back the characters head is represented by the snake (also a biblical reference to sin). This internal conflict of your love for your child and hate for the self are "considerately killing" him This is backed up when the snake hisses behind him about the damage he can cause now that a life is in his hands. But the love for the "blood" before him means he can't run from this. There is a connection that he feels to the child no matter how far away he is or how long he's gone. A child changes you whether you want it or not The next bit that gets me is when he's talking about the snake being drowned. He looks into the eyes of his insecurity (which has died) and then to the eyes of the child. His fear fades when he realises that there will be times having a child will be hard. There will be tears and sacrifice but he realises that's ok. He doesn't mind any more because his love is unconditional. He has found something bigger than he is and his insecurity is now second to the life in front of him. Now I'm not sure Maynard has put a lot of detail into the meaning of this song in interviews (I don't think he ever does but that's what makes him so good at writing). My interpretation could be way off. But these lyrics are some of the most profound I've ever listened to

maynard introduces this song in a few different ways, once he stated the old trope of an angel on one shoulder and a devil on the other, one good one bad, but what if its just 2 different friends not really knowing whats best for you and your ability to distinguish good vs evil is more convoluted. my favorite introduction is this quote from maynard "This next song is about having children, do any of you have kids? It is amazing how much they change your life isn't it?" then they played the song

Best translation of the song I heard was, "... the hope to be a good father and overcoming past anguish and pain", the snake being the pain and hate, turning his piss to wine, hissing what his damages could inflict on his son. H is his son's middle initial(?).
