This is my dream keyboard and finally someone has made a new review specifically for the v2 and the modules. It's still a dream because UHK is too expensive for me. Settling for now using the Thinkpad Trackpoint Wireless Keyboard II. But I have made lots of customization using Karabiner like that arrow keys on the JIKL keys.

I have one of these with the trackball module, key cluster and palm rests. I couldn't be happier with it. I do a lot of coding and this has been the only Ergo keyboard that has not given me the feeling that all of the brackets and punctuation I need to use constantly second class status. I was a bit of a keyboard collector, usually swapping out the keyboard I was using one a month; but since I got my UHK it hasn't left my desk.

I am using the 1st generation UHK daily as a programmer and it is the best keyboard ever (for me). I would recommend the palm-rest too. The cluster and trackball modules are great, but even without them you can to everything without and problems. Reaching function keys is easy, you are just pressing an additional button and 1, 2, 3 ... etc. I needed only a day to get used to the cursor keys. I did borrow a UHK from a friend to be sure that this is the right keyboard for me .. and I was convinced after some days at work with it.

The ABS keycaps of the 1st generation UHK were a bit cheap, so I replaced them by PBT on my own. The new UHK already has those and every key-switch is even hot-swap-able now.

Thank you for the review. You say that you tried the Ergodox EZ also. I use it right now but also not 100% satisfied with it. So what are the advantages of the UHK in your opinion? One thing I really love on the Ergodox is the training programm with my own layout visualized. Is there something similar on the UHK?

As a programmer, how do I use a keyboard without FKeys? Using the IntelliJ IDE as an example (which is a champion in promoting keyboard only workflow), the entire FKey row from F2 to F12 is used for commonly used IDE functions, both the bare FKeys and in combination with SHIFT and CTRL. Not having the physical FKEY directly accessible is a huge downside to productivity IMHO. I own a UHK, a first generation one (no LED, no Hotswapable) and I tried very hard to get used to it for weeks, but my productivity had dropped so much that I finally had to quit using it. Also, I was starting to get pain in my fingers from doing many three or four finger combinations (for exemple try: MOD + SHIFT + CTRL + 10 which is used to lauch the application in a debug session), which isn't much better than pain in my shoulder. The UHK is a good product, but it's not for developers using a modern IDE (IMHO). I hope they will address this target more in their next product (hope it will be a 75%). In the meantime I use the GMMK Pro, not much larger than the UHK but has all the necessary keys in direct access.

I'm sorry you had this experience with it. My own experience is very different - I think it's the perfect keyboard for programmers. Holding down multiple keys in combination becomes second nature after a little while, and in my experience, stretching to reach for keys that are further away from the center is worse. But if you prefer having the F-keys directly available, just reprogram it 😁 I think that's the most powerful part of this keyboard - you can set it up exactly how you want it. I have multiple different maps, one for video editing, one for programming, one standard map, etc - all for different workflows and settings. If you use certain keys a lot in combination with your IDE, spend a little time making a custom map (using the extra key cluster module for the most-used keys). It's well worth the effort!

I've got a UHK 1 with browns and it is still typing wonderfully. Unfortunately the print on the E-key and my J-key bump (for finding the key for 10 finger typing) are now almost gone, so I'll have to get a set of PBT keycaps for it. Might order one other as I use the keyboard professionally and I need it at work as well. Probably will get a UHK-2 for home and ship the other keyboard to the office. Worn out the feet too, but the wrests are still holding up to my surprise.

What are your thoughts on ortholineal vs staggered key distribution? And what didn’t you like about the Moonlander?
@ebalda1
@ebalda1 2 жыл бұрын
I had the Moonlander for 6+ months and completely love it. It's true that you don't have a mouse substitute though, so it gets a little awkward when you need to click+delete repetitively (which is not often). However, "key clusters" are a game-changer and the key distribution is perfect.

@@SimonHoiberg ok, cool, but if the Moonlander was so great, why did you change it for this other keyboard with staggered distribution?
@SimonHoiberg
@SimonHoiberg 2 жыл бұрын
@@RodrigoDAgostino Sorry - I agreed with the last part. Split + key clusters was great. But I couldn't live without the mouse substitute, and I think the UHK60 is much nicer looking (The ErgoDox has that alien/spaceship vibe to it, that I don't really like 😅) Also, the frame of the UHK60 is much more solid, and the hardware seems like much better quality. Even the "Das Keyboard" was much better here. The ErgoDox feels very "plastic-y". Though - I was happy the ErgoDox as well, so not saying it was a bad keyboard at all. But I prefer the UHK60, by far.

That was definitely a great and very informative video. Thank you. But at the same time I simply don't understand this hype. Never ever will I spend 600€ for a keyboard (the price I see in Germany). Yes, I understand more or less why is it so expensive and where are the advantages of this keyboard. But to be honest: I'm very happy and productive with the Keychron K3 for 70€. And hell, yes I'm also coding a lot and in the last time I also writing a lot of internal RFC where writing is even much more important. If you want to be productive - read a book on the topic, do something and evaluate if it all make sense for you. If you have a need to spend such amount of money rather invest into table, monitor, treadmill, career coach, whatever... But keyboard?

2 questions: 1. How do you scroll wheel with it? 2. Why after a columnar layout w/ the Ergodox would you go back to the (more standard) staggered row design here / if they offered a UHK in ortholinear or columnar, would you switch to it?
@duncanmurray6587
@duncanmurray6587 9 ай бұрын
Scroll wheel, by default, is Mouse-H/Y. For me, yes I'd be tempted with a columnar layout. I still think most of the ergonomic benefit comes from having the keyboard split, but agree that the staggered layout is just a historical thing.

Not ideal for a software engineer that is also a gamer. Why the USB port is on the right side? That's the most stupid thing that many ergo keyboard manufacturers do, e.g., ErgoDox ez has the same exact problem. We are gamers, we want to use just the left half of the keyboard alone sometimes and have the rest of the space for mouse movement! Also, in this price tag I would expect to be able to programe the RGB for each individual key, as most of the keyboards in this price lets you do. It looks cool, but I can't justify the price really...
