This is one of my favorite movies. You know how everyone has that ONE movie that hits you really hard? This is mine. When it came out, I was a sophomore in high school. I'd been diagnosed with severe OCD a year earlier and I was having a hard time--trying different medications and undergoing therapy which was sometimes really scary. And all the while, I was a teenager--meaning, I wanted to fit in but I couldn't tell anyone about this illness I had, since I was too ashamed. Teenage years generally stink for everyone but I had that extra burden and it made me very sad and also angry. Seeing Russell Crowe's character in this movie come to the realization that he had to learn to live with his delusions (which by my understanding, were never visual but that was dramatized for the movie) and they didn't need to hold him back--was a revelation to seventeen-year-old me. More than half a lifetime has passed now and I feel that I've beaten my OCD, to a point--I can pick up something that a stranger dropped and hand it to them, and I can ride public transportation each day without washing my hands up to my elbows seven times afterwards. BUT at the same time it is also a part of me and has helped shape my personality and values. Just like, I believe, John Nash's schizophrenia shaped him. A Beautiful Mind is gritty and, at times, frightening--but also inspirational. I recommend it, obviously. 😃

First, you're probably right -- (though this movie is based on a true story, with anecdotes about how Nash met his wife and how she impressed him with her own creative solutions to social and economic problems.) Remember their contract employer, though: working minor tasks for MIT, they likely have a list of a dozen different tasks, as well as standing instructions to try to avoid classroom disruptions. Since most university classes are actually empty most hours, they may have been working there not realizing a class was in session. Another probability was it was near lunch, or they were sandbagging the jobs and took it as an excuse to take a break and still pad their billing. We can't be sure, of course. But MIT likely had some stipulations on minimizing class disruption, which would change the usual custom of just working through a peeved citizen.
