These lamps where used in streetlights a lot, from the 70s and onwards. Low pressure sodium lamps are monochromatic, the particular one in the video is a 135W SOX. These SOX lamps emits 2 wavelengths 589.9nm and 589.0nm known as the sodium d line.
@TheNicolexoxo8 ай бұрын
i'm assuming you can't just buy that lamp, though, correct? you need a ballast and other things? trying to get one for a work thing.
@kransurfing6 ай бұрын
@@TheNicolexoxo Yes but the appropriate ballast is the only other thing you need to drive it along with power obviously :) They first need to warm up from the bright pink colour to the yellow orange you see here, which can take a little while. Best of luck!
@mikejosef24705 ай бұрын
Yeah they were pretty common when I was a kid (late 70's).
@adamaglionby74385 ай бұрын
Last factory making them was Philips in Hamilton, Scotland, closed few years ago. Used to have a Philips neon sign on factory, neon is the starter gas in SOX, low pressure sodium lamps, hence pink glow at startup
@timhartherz56525 ай бұрын
They used to be pretty common around here up to the early 2000's as illumination for streets outside of towns and sometimes parking lots. Take a while to ramp up but very efficient (for that time) better than cfl's or mercury lights (similar technology). Disposal was a bit tricky, you would need to smash them inside a special container and then flood said container with water, would then get boiling hot as the sodium reacts with the water. Probably the origin of the saying "All cat's are grey at night!"

This is also why the French have been using selective yellow fog lights on their cars for a long time. Fog and rain is technically blue. Yellow lights don't light up the fog in front of you. Modern LED and xenon/HID lamps emit lots of blue light so they reflect the rain ad fog which blinds you more than it helps you. It doesn't matter how many thousands of lumens that are written on the packaging, the bluish light does blind you at night. Yellow tinted lights don't do this, however any person with a blue or green coat will become pitch black so yellow lights should be used with caution as well. It is the other way around with many modern LED lights: a deer with brown fur or a person with a red coat becomes barely visible under some medium quality led lights. Some LEDs are good though, and some are bad. Price (of car) makes no difference, it seems to be very random which cars have good lights and which ones don't. And it is measurable but nobody does it because nobody knows why or what the numbers mean. People only care about the lumens, the higher number the better you know. Halogen lights are somewhere in the middle, a good middle ground. This is one of the reasons why I love my old Suzuki. Halogen lights are a lot better than modern lights for general winter driving, unless you have multiple different types of lights that you know how and when to switch between.

This lamp is called a Low Pressure Sodium lamp. Its the Most efficient light source known to man. Its pretty much the older sister of the High Pressure Sodium lights you see on Street Lights. High Pressure Sodium actually allows you to see some color since it has a CRI of ~21. To sum up what CRI is, it is pretty much a measurement of how well a light source can show color. Low Pressure Sodium has a CRI rating of 0, meaning it’s purely Monochromatic. The Sun, for example, has a CRI of 100 and shows all color Perfectly, Incandescent lamps have a CRI of 99. sodium lamps peak at 589nm which is kind of close* to peak human eye sensitivity, and are somewhat energy efficient (they came before LEDs were cool). this dude did a couple videos about these lights: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/i5eUgM-H3LvXonU.html kzfaq.info/get/bejne/ra9zYMx4qbq5ZGQ.html *apparently at night the peak sensitivity blueshifts somewhat

@@bottlekruiser Also there's this experiment as well: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/a8B-gadyl725g4k.html that was done by the Action lab. where he used such a lamp as well with fire to a shadow from fire. Since with a specific element being burned in the fire, causes it to be opaque to the light from a sodium lamp, and respectively casts a shadow, alongside looking dark in color as well.
@rogerhargreaves22722 жыл бұрын
Yes human eyes are receptive to low power sodium lights. If white light was generated by those old style bulbs the light would appear dim. Also green lasers appear more powerful than the same power blue lasers.

My school has those around the observatory to not screw up their equipment. I believe they just tune out the wavelength that this light emits and it greatly reduces the light pollution that they have to deal with even in the middle of a city

When the sodium street lights in our neighborhood were replaced with white LED, everything went from black and white to full color (just like it was daytime) and felt weird for the first few nights😄

Neopixels can have a color blinding effect. If you have some, try lighting a room with them in a blue or green color and trying to guess the color of skittles in your hand.

Literally all color has a color blind effect. If you have a room lit with red light, everything's going to look weird, except things that are already red.

@@sanderodermatt4557 I know, but with a regular pack of Skittles, those seem to have the greatest effect. It might have to do with how much of each type of food coloring goes into each skittle.

Red and green are really poor choices for the two important colors on a stoplight considering they're the two colors most colorblind people can't tell apart.
@Gunbudder2 жыл бұрын
it was a poor choice, but they thought of that which is why the position of the lights has to be the same everywhere. stop is the top light, go is the bottom light, and caution is the middle light if its there. you should never see a light change color in the same spot, even if its a turn arrow.
@SirHurricane_2 жыл бұрын
They actually thought of that and the stoplights aren’t green and red (more of a blue green and a orange red). I’d recommend watching a video on it because it’s really cool
