I think 32:30 was a lost in translation moment because the alchemists were actually talking about the literal monster, not the commoners. The problem is that the warriors have never even concieved of a genuine monster, so you had to pick the closest word, which was "impure". They then thought the alchemists were afraid of the commoners, because they still don't have the actual concept of a real monster, so they agreed to help. Some warrior must have been really surprised, I have to imagine.

I disagree @@panampace . The order of the mural implies that they were called to the tower, met the bards, and then built the fortress and started guarding against the impure. Additonally, I think that there has only ever been one monster: an alchemist caught in a lab accident.

33:03 My theory is that when warriors came to the tower, they met bards( which where there before). The bards told them about strange "monsters" that showed threat to them , but the warriors (who didn't know their language ) translated that as: "everyone except us is evil, do not let them pass" and thus counted devotees that tried to ascend the tower as bad ("impure").
@pretzelbomb6105
@pretzelbomb6105 7 ай бұрын
I don't think it's that deep. The warriors seem to use the term "Impure" for others who do not follow their call or create music. As they lack a glyph for "Monster" as the Alchemists have, "Impure" is the best fit. The same thing happened when he translated between Alchemist and Devotee. The Alchemist said he would "Create a formula" and the best translation was "Make a potion". You effectively have to ignore the connotations of some words and just look at their basic meanings when exact translations aren't available.

Reminds me of the Christian missionaries coming into my island centuries ago. We do not have a word for "sheep/lamb" since there are none here, so the missionaries use the word "pig" as a subtitute because pigs were (and still are) highly valued in the island society. The pig of God.

@@pretzelbomb6105No I really think it is that deep. The different cultures have entirely different theories about what’s going on. It’s kinda the whole lore to the game. Their call *is* from the bards, *to* push back the monsters, which they interpreted the devotees as too.
@iwdul

Monster lore: the guy from laboratory 3 found the recepture, but he had to sacrifice himself. You can see the explosion in the laboratory and traces of him crawling to the vent leading down to the copper mines, where we meet the monster (that's why is was closed by the scientists). The scintists want to help him, but are scared of him, thats why 32:34 they ask the warriors for help. Later, if you go to laboratory 1, you can see they've captured the monster and are trying to bring him back.

I want to believe the warriors thought they were going to beat back some devotee mob since devotees and monsters were "impures", only to encounter a mutant in the dark.
@thespanishinquisition4078
@thespanishinquisition4078 7 ай бұрын
@@FeyTheBin Taking into account how chill they are around the caged monster when you see them in the lab, and the complete lack of blood or other signs of a struggle in the mines, there's a serious posibility they thought it was just a crazed dude, and one seriously onesided curbstomping later they still think the monster's just some crazed dude. (Which actually isn't even that far off. He's the lab 3 scientist, who for some reason decided to drink his faery formula instead of turning it into a key, and turned into that.) Also fun fact: while the warriors seem to have an extremely polarized worldview, distinguishing only between people who play instruments, people who don't play instruments but are still tollerable (scientists and other warriors) and people they don't tollerate (literally everyone else). They still manage to be some of the chillest soldiers in any videogame ever. I mean, think about it. You NEVER actually see them kill or injure anyone. The monster seems fine after they capture it, hell they even cover it so it won't get hurt by the light. And even their word for fighting actually just translates to "push/expell", plus they fully embrace the devotees as soon as they learn how to comunicate and realize they can play instruments, plus they're chill with the scientists by default, so their standards certainly aren't that high. I mean at worst you can say its kind of implied they kill you if they catch you. But the animation is the same as the devotee just changing the shadow and when the (SPOILERS) do kill you in the last levels its a completely different animation so its way more likely they just beat you and throw you out. For a culture all about being a warrior... they're more like riot cops at worst. Their best weapon is literally just a really big closed door.

I believe that's the point. You are never asked a question by an Alchemist, even when it seems you should have been. Instead, every statement is made like an assertion of fact and it is left to the recipient to confirm or deny it. Being a society clearly based on scientific rigor, it then stands that their concepts of "statement" and "question" are functionally one thing. Basically, they don't ask questions because every single thing they say is already a question.

The monsters the alchemists are referring to are the real monsters in the copper mine. Funny thing, when I played I never discovered the warrior statue could rotate, so I never got the real word for “impure”. I spent the whole game with that glyph marked as “monster/devotee”. I really like how the language differences are affected by the differing perspectives of the castes.

I love the progression of languages as you move up the tower The first two languages were very simple with straight lines and simple grammar The third language introduce more curvier lines which make it more difficult to read (imo) and it also added more complex grammar I wonder what this next one is going to be. I have got a chemistry exam tomorrow but that can wait Edit: watched the video. This ones grammar feels a lot closer to english and they made the symbols even more complex this time. The monsters are between the bard and alchemist floors, which isn't an area the warriors can reach as the bards tell the warriors to stay out of their place. Thee warriors themselves really like music, so they treat the bards above them as chosen ones for bringing music to them (very infrequently, in all likelihood), likely shooing away the devotees that later arrived below on the bards' behalf (their civilization's sworn duty) because the bards are classist and don't like working class plebs. All the while not realizing the devotees have musicians too. Since the bards are holy to the warriors, what the bards dislike are the impure and became demonized, as opposed to the alchemists who probably don't even know about the religious folk all the way down and are purely concerned about the literal xenomorphs stalking their mine shafts. That's my impression of the string of tragic miscommunications that could've ensued, anyway. The trouble with cross-language communication is that one culture's language will often have a bunch of words for things another culture doesn't even think about existing, either due to lack of exposure in the first place or them simply viewing the world from a different perspective.

I think the warrior scientist conversation was about the scientists asking the warriors to get rid of Dave. You can probably go through that area safely now.

I couldn't wait for this video to come out so I played through the game, and I must say, that it has a really satisfying ending and I can't wait for you to reach it!

I played this before your video came out and this area gave me so much trouble, because I completely somehow missed the lab 1 where they have the big board about making the key for the door. Great video as usual, and now I know where I need to go to figure rest of the game out. Hopefully can finish next area before next video :D

Someone commented on one of your last videos of this game saying that duolingo should do something like this. I think that is a fantastic was to learn a new language. Because not only are you learning the words but the syntaxes of them too which is amazing
