Another tip: if your pc/laptop doesn't boot after you cleaned it, You should remove the RAM modules and clean the RAM slots, sometimes dust gets stuck in the RAM slots when you clean your system and that prevents the system to boot.

Some notebooks allow you to reset the BIOS by using the power button. May it "hold for 10 seconds" or "press 5 times quickly". Oh and some notebooks, especially the thinner ones don't have a dedicated CMOS battery anymore ... since there's another battery that's "always connected" :)

Worth noting, Clevo systems like the one in the video have a keyboard shortcut to reset the CMOS. If you have a Clevo system (OriginPC, Eurocom, Sager etc): - Power the machine off - Hold Fn + D, Hold power button until the system turns on, Release power button, release Fn+D once you get a popup message saying NVRAM reset. - Newer systems also have an Fn + G shortcut to reset any GPU overclocks as well. That being said, removing the CMOS battery is the sure-fire way to reset CMOS for any laptop. It's just that the one in the video happens to have a convenient shortcut. Also worth noting, many laptops have the CMOS battery placed UNDER the keyboard (on the "top" of the motherboard).

If you corrupt your BIOS and it absolutely will not post... Get the latest (or preferred) BIOS onto a thumb drive from the manufacturer website, move the file and then plug the drive in while the bricked computer is off and then boot it. Wait several minutes for it to flash the BIOS into the motherboard and you should see it post within 10 minutes.

This would work on most laptops, but if it won't work on yours, consult the manual or google how to reset bios for your particular model, it's likely you need to short some copper trace to reset the bios
@PhoenixNL72-DEGA-
@PhoenixNL72-DEGA- 3 жыл бұрын
Tip: If you have an old laptop then it is possible that the CMOS battery is empty (it's just a regular non rechargable battery). That means that if you have settings in your BIOS for things like boot order or memory speed (XMP profile) every time the laptop's battery is drained, it will lose those settings. In most cases the laptop will still work, but some laptops might refuse to boot at all. Also if the CMOS loses it's settings the laptop (and normal motherboards too) will do a deep hardware scan to see what memory settings to use and what type of drive is installed. This will take a few seconds more then a normal BIOS post check. So replacing an empty CMOS battery can slightly speed up your booting after an empty laptop battery situation.

Most laptops that I service have a reset CMOS jumper near the RAMs slot. It's really small, sometimes hidden with black tape and usually you can ready RST or RTC-CLEAR or similar. You need to use metallic (conductive) tweezers to short 2 small copper pads. Most of the times, the cmos battery is well hidden and requires a full system disassemble

At IBM, Laptop TechSupport days: The first line in case of no post black screen scenario. Pull power and battery out. Holder the power on button for at least 5 seconds down. Put in the power cable. Press the power button again. We would not instruct the customer to consult the available PDF how to take the bottom off and remove the CMOS battery. We also ask to connect an external monitor, in case the backlight failed (or take it into a dark room and shine with a flashlight in it, if the backlight failed you can still see something with the help of the flashlight in a darker room). If it is really dead, send it to/mail it into the Customer Service Centre. And they do their job, hand on. Which can't be done or expected by your everyday customer.

If the MB on the desktop has a button then you can push to clear, if it dont then you would have to remove the battery on the MB itself to clear the CMOS, i believe the laptop and the desktop MB uses the same battery CR3032, its just enclose in a laptop as they dont have space on the MB for the mounting harness to have it directly on the board.

On almost all laptops I have serviced in the past that won't post boot I have done almost the same thing...I tend to use a Magnifying Glass and go over the area where the battery is located in said laptop and see if there isn't a jumper connection somewhere. Most of the time the jumper is there but no pins to cross to clear the CMOS. If the jumper section is there, I used a flathead screwdriver and just cross the sections to clear the CMOS. However, there have been instances where there is no jumper section at all and I have to do the old tried and true method of removing the CMOS battery and resetting like your showing Jay. And not on top of that there have been a few instances where they have the damn CMOS battery soldered to the board and I have needed to drag out the ole soldering iron to unsolder the battery from the board to get the thing to post boot after clearing the CMOS that way. So yea, there are like you said a ton of ways manufacturers put these things together and there are too many to name that have issues like this and almost everyone of them is different in some way to fix them. There is no way to show them all without creating 1000's of videos for each one...lol Good Luck with that. ;)

My experience of supporting notebooks with built-in batteries: unplug the power cable; hold down the power button for 30s (really only needs about 10s but most people will fast-count rather than counting seconds... then the good old "nothing's happening," to which I'll respond "good, that means you're doing it right..."); hold down Win+B and turn on; oh look, the BIOS is restoring itself. That is actually the exact way I fixed my instrument cluster in my car. Was fiddling with it using a fault reader thingamajig to find out what is it's niggle , got called over to help with something and in the mean time I left it plugged in and running, my son was curious what I was playing with and decided to have a go at this clunky handheld thing that is plugged in to the car. He played with it for a bit and figured out it is not a handheld game of any kind, he unplugged it after messing with it to bring it to me and ask what it was. After an audible face-palm and a short lecture on asking before fiddling with things that are not his I returned to the car seemingly off with the ignition in the powered state as i left it. It started just fine but everything on the dash was dead, nothing worked. Dreading the worst I power cycled it a couple of times, nothing. Left it alone for an hour or so and tried again, still nothing. Left it for the day. Next day I had an epiphany in the shower (as you do). Disconnect the battery, drain the caps, power cycle and try again. And what do ya know? It fucking worked! It felt really good to cancel a mechanic callout that would probably charge me an arm and a dick for a new cluster + fitting.

My motherboard only has two pins that are awkwardly placed that need shorting to get it to reset if I go too far. I've ordered one of those external USB hubs with the power, HDD etc connectors , USB backplate and crucially external buttons to press which I am going to use for such a situation. You could even get an even cheaper, micro push button with two pin cable connector and wire it to the BIOS battery header somehow that cuts out the current from the battery and just route and poke it from some hole/vent (or if you don't care drilll a space into the shell) in order to hard reset the BIOS.

It's not like MSI Afterburner; it's a bare metal tweaking/overclocking tool, and while it *can* be limited by the options exposed/not exposed by the motherboard's BIOS, it will usually expose at least as much as the BIOS does and usually a LOT more, especially when it comes to things like CPU multipliers for the cores and cache as well as Turbo Boost voltages, time limits and other voltages. I had a similar situation happen with my own rig not too long ago where I messed with the manufacturer's overclocking utility and got a black screen/failure to post and had to do the same. I pulled the power, pulled the battery and pulled the CMOS battery, however often times the manufacturer will actually have a key combination you can press during post to reset the BIOS to safe defaults (mine does, however my keyboard doesn't work and the key combination required only works with the built in/proprietary laptop keyboard even though the BIOS does see my USB keyboard just because of a custom function key on the built in keyboard that other keyboards don't have). As for trying to remove restrictions/limits from the manufacturer on a laptop, XTU is really the wrong tool for that purpose. You should check out a nifty little utility called ThrottleStop. I'm an avid high-end laptop user and have been using ThrottleStop for a couple of years now and it's excellent. It lets you lock in multipliers, disable all sorts of throttling and C states/P states, manipulate voltages, remove limits (like power limits and thermal limits, so BE CAREFUL) and it also allows you to undervolt your CPU which is usually the key to locking in a higher multiplier and getting a good, stable and safe OC on a high end laptop. It also allows configuring multiple profiles and can change the profile depending on whether the laptop is on AC or battery which can be quite handy for higher end rigs that need their power adapter to pull full clock speeds. It also monitors temps for CPU and GPU and lists the reasons for throttling/limits on the motherboard/CPU and unlike XTU, it does not mess with the BIOS; everything it does is within Windows and you can have it start on boot or just run it manually when you want to OC and you can quickly switch profiles depending on what you're doing (like surfing the web vs gaming).

Those CMOS batteries look like something that would be in a PowerBook G3. I would know because I've taken one apart before, very cool old laptops.

Tis true, I always press the power button a couple times to discharge the caps before working inside the case. Picked up that tip when working inside CRTs.

Some brands come with a soft CMOS reset combination. HP has Winkey + V for 2-3s when you start the computer. Should do the same as removing battery

I'm not sure about other brand but for most HP laptop, you just have to hold your power button for 10 second when powered off. It'll reset it. Also, iirc the XTL should reset itself after a hard reboot. Shouldn't need to remove the battery I think?

Hey Jay, can you please make a video on VR headsets and system requirements? What to look for, what to avoid, Oculus vs Vive vs WMR? Can I really get away with a weaker GPU? Etc. etc. I know you have a video setting up the racing sim, but a video on VR headsets and VR gaming on a budget would be very informative, especially since there are many new VR ideas hitting the market, and no one on a budget wants to spend $1k on a Vive Pro or the new Steam headset.

I mean, that sticker over the screws n stuff for the warranty has been done for decades, so its clearly legal, and if you yourself open up your own Laptop within that warranty period, then the brand/company won't take liability for any damage you might have caused, since they don't know if you'd even done anything to it. I mean, look Jay, I bought my first gaming rig from a PC builder company in Germany, which offers a 3 year warranty on their machines. But they put the warranty sticker onto the RAM and Motherboard connector.

No, they can't legally deny you warranty service if you mess with a tamper sticker, but they CAN legally make you wait several weeks for service if you do.
