If there's one Legato phrase that I've leaned on over the years - I think this is one of the first that got me out of the more Satriani type lines and into a more even 16ths type way of playing.

Ah yes. I also learned this one from Paul Gilbert's first instructional video when that video "dropped" lol! It's one of those golden nuggets that makes one sound more "Holdsworthian"! It's also fun to create other 8 note permutations across two strings, or two different 8 note groups across four strings, or 3 different 8 note groups across all six strings! Throw in some chromatics as well: 3 or 4 notes a half step apart into a sequence. Then you're cookin'! Fun with Fusion!

What I like about your videos man is that you still have fun with it. I really enjoy your intros and outros solos. They’re really inspiring. It’s like you’re saying indirectly that “this is what you are going to be able to acquire in this video.” And your lessons are great! They’re not the usual ones but they come from your personal life experiences and journey as a musician. Keep it up man! 🙌

Hi mate, just stumbled upon your video and it sounds amazing. I'm more on the heavy rock metal sounding bands. But lately i've been digging this sound, thanks for this lesson, I just want to ask where do I begin If I want to play that kind of genre? Just want to add ....the tabs are really helpful. Cheers...SUBSCRIBED.👍

I enjoyed the video. The technique you’re using reminds me of Eric Johnson. Just to be clear that’s a compliment! How often are you picking the notes versus slurring or hammering on to the notes?

Hi John, great lesson!!! Do you find it easier to do legato with lighter gauge strings like 8s or heavier strings like 10 & 11s? I thought lighter would be easier but heard from several great guitarists that 11s were easier. Thanks 😊

i think with the first example i suck at the 5 9 stretch so i play the same notes but doing it 5 7 e string then 45 a string then 4 d string then 57 a string to 4 d string. this is why im terrible. far too stubborn in my ways. then continue the rest the same. you get the nice slide from the 4 on d to the 6 for next pattern. but lose the proper legato of the e and a strings.

I was playing around with it. On a three notes per string patter (1 2 3), maybe (first string) 1-2-3-1-2-1 (next string) 3-2, repeat.

Paul Gilbert has those pull-offs that sound very staccato.. he's good in alternate picking but legato? nah! on the other hand, satriani, brett garsed & allan holdsworth are the best examples of the legato masters.. not tom quayle, not rick graham nor guthrie govan (no offense to their fans.. ✌️), govan has a lot of pull offs on his lines but the above mention guys that i blurted out.. true legato does not have pull offs but reverse hammers..
