The end of the 1993 World Series is one of those iconic sports moments you've probably seen in passing, but might not understand in-depth. This episode of Rewinder digs into how much was at stake, who was involved, and what a topsy-turvy battle Game 6 between the Blue Jays and Phillies really was.
Obviously, this is a Joe Carter story, and we'll get to know Carter a bit. But we also need to meet the fascinating Philadelphia pitcher, Mitch Williams, who entered this moment searching for some much-needed redemption. And while this interaction is a one-on-one match between pitcher and batter, it helps to understand just how deep both of these lineups were ... and also how things could have gone differently in a game dictated by so many little choices, little errors, and little victories.

@Seanus Patricus Yeah, that's true. I can only really think of a couple non-baseball calls that stick out at me, like the Miracle on Ice or Havlicek Stole the Ball, but baseball is rich in calls like that. It's not that the other announcers are bad - perhaps it's that announcers can mentally prepare themselves for the situation? After all, Cheek had 4 pitches to think about what to say.

roguishpaladin I agree with you except that having seen it live myself, there was no way anyone expected he would hit a home run in that situation. So to uncork an all timer like ‘touch em all’ right in the moment like that is why cheek is in the hof. I agree that he would have had his call prepared beforehand but the modifier was next level stuff

I got to meet Joe Carter a few years back (meet and greet at a Vancouver Canadians game) and he was so kind and genuinely happy to see all the Jays fans. He greeted everyone with a big smile and handshake, getting pictures with everyone. I’m glad he was the one to hit the HR

I will never forget this moment. I was in 11th grade here in Toronto, watching the game with a bunch of people in my friend's basement. We were so despondent at the idea of the series going back to Philly for game 7. Carter hit that home run and we went nuts. Jumping around, smacking the ceiling, and then we charged outside and quickly made our way to Yonge Street where the party had already started. It was euphoria! One of my most vivid memories of high school, no question. And when the Raptors won last June, I knew all the young people were having the same experience I had 26 years earlier. Amazing.

LOL that's what I was going to say. It is only the 3rd of October. Unless you live right on the north pole, or are a cold blooded reptilian, it hasn't been cold anywhere up here. At least what a Canadian would consider cold. Don't think anyone has even seen snow yet? Has it even dropped to low single digits anywhere yet?

This moment ended Mitch's career. He was released 2 months into the following season in Houston and made sporadic appearances with the Angels and Royals before calling it quits. For every Mariano Rivera, there are numerous closers who flame out and never get it back.

There was a closer for the Red Sox( I believe) that gave up a big HR to lose the ALCS and ended up committing suicide over it. Someone can remind me all the details but I’m pretty sure that was the team.

Problem is the most famous part of that game is Lonnie Smith pausing at 2nd base instead of going on to score...and there was still 2 more innings in the game so you couldn't rewind just to that moment.

@Harry Engel The pitching actually declined in 1993 BIG TIME. They had a lot of big names in the rotation...Morris, Stewart, Guzman, and Hentgen, but only Guzman had a decent FIP (3.77). It's crazy how Hentgen got 19 wins that year with a 4.61 FIP...it's safe to say that the Jays wouldn't have made the playoffs that year if not for their incredible offense.

Great memories. Saw a playoff game that year. Was at Yonge St in front of HMV with a huge crowd watching this game on the big screen. When Carter hit that homerun. The crowd erupted and it was a massive celebration like no other. It felt like a carnival all night into the morning. Great time.

Great video! I loved living through those times with the Jays. I just watched a panel with Joe Carter, Cito Gaston, Rickey Henderson, and Dave Stewart. When Joe swung at the really bad second strike pitch, he explained that Mickey Morandini stood in the perfect spot behind the pitcher where he lost sight of the ball because it blended in with Morandini's jersey. So he figured they were going to try that pitch again but if he could see that it was a good pitch, he was ready to act on instinct. And the rest is history. A great chat to watch, he went through exactly what he was thinking the whole at bat!

I was 7 years old and my parents let me stay up to watch this. One of my best memories with my father was seeing how excited he got watching this. He didn't care much for baseball but seeing my brothers and I so excited made him happy. Sometimes a sport is more than just a game

As a life long Jays fan, this is easily the greatest memory that I have. That series was incredible, it was a battle of two teams with insane scoring power. That Jays line up was the best that I have ever seen. I was not as big of a Carter fan as most, but his leadership and charisma are undeniable to this day. I really loved watching Molitor hit, as he was the consistent of them all.

As a Blue Jays fan who came 5 years too late to experience this moment in all of its glory in a deeper context of that season, this video was awesome. Though I have the Joe Carter call memorized, I wish I was around to see this glorious moment in Toronto sports history.

Either a collapse of the 2000s-2010s Phillies, or rewinders of either Roy Halladays post season no hitter in his first ever playoff start, or the 2017 WS game 5. That game 5 might need one of those rewinders where it skips forward to 2020 and the scandal.

I remember that. “Touch them all Joe”. It defined my childhood. I was a new immigrant to Canada and this piece of memory solidify my attachment and gave me a sense of being a part of the country. O’Canada

Thank you so much for this. My Make-a-Wish was to stay in one of those wild expensive SkyDome hotel rooms overlooking the field and meeting my hero, Joe Carter. I'll never forget being 11 years-old, draped resplendently in Blue Jays attire, crying my face off that the Jays were going to lose (I was/am sensitive. Fight me. Actually don't, I'm sensitive). After falling asleep in a couch pillow soaked with the tears of my innocence, my dad shook me awake, pointed to the TV, and ::CRACK:: Joe Carter became the most important man on the planet (sorry, Dad), replacing Candy Maldonado as my favorite ball player. He was my favorite because his name was Candy and I was 9. But now, I was a rugged 11 years old, and racist face Curt Schilling's Phillies could suck a butt. Thank you, Seth. I can't wait to show my dad.

So I have a crazy story on how my dad got the 1992-93 rings from the jays So my dad was an accountant for the jays during this stretch and apparently staff members get a ring too, and then he quit after those seasons because of a strike

I remember this like it was yesterday. I also thought it was cool that Joe 'touched' the ball last in both '92 and '93. He was playing 1B in '92 on the Nixon dribbler.
