In elementary school, I was chosen to be an angel, in a Christmas play. When a white little girl had enrolled in our school play, the teacher who was in charge of the play, took me out of being an angel and replaced me with the white girl! She said that the white girl looks more like an angel, therefore would make a prettier angel!! I was 10 years old at the time, I'm now 62 years old and that incident still has an impact in my life!

This made me cry, because when my gorgeous chocolate daughter was in middle school, a light skinned black child told her she could not play with her and her friends because she was too dark. If there was ever a time I wanted kill was then, but after talking to my daughter as we cried together, I told her how beautiful she was and what true beauty means and how proud she should be to be black. The last thing I told her was to keep on shining and to lead and dazzle with brilliance, and boy has she shine in every possible way, Bs wearing, Masters Degree bearing, Phd bearing, how is that for being magically black.

Massiyah Bakongo lean not on your own understanding. You really need to read that again and with context. God loves ALL no matter if he is a sinner or what his skin looks like. All he care about is if you are willing to turn away from the sin of the world and go to him. No spread racism and hate. I’m Black, my husband and three sons are black. We teach our boys that love your skin but don’t put down others because they are not Black. In the end we ALL bleed red.

When I first saw the video of this little girl I couldn’t hold back my tears. It crushed my spirit, I was once her. So many little black girls feel this way. We are often told we are not good enough or beautiful. Growing up I didn’t see a representation of myself on tv, ads, books etc. People would say things like “you’re pretty for a black girl”, or “you’re pretty for dark skin girl”. I would be teased about my skin complexion and features, which gave me a complex at such a young age. Especially being teased by my peers in school, it is very important to speak love into your children. OMG Angela Bassett I almost lost it !!! 😳🤯😍😍

So, it may not be that she was told by any one in particular in her surroundings, but the lack of hearing and seeing it on a daily or regular basis that little brown girls are adored. Children can see what's going on in this world, they just do not always know how to express it or express it in the best possible way of their purest little hearts in their honesty what concerns them.

Look at how often rich and successful black men marry and choose lighter or pale skin as wives, even if he's dark chocolate himself. As such I dint think I was beautiful enough growing up being skinny. Plus only when i grew up did i realize that all my light skinned friends used to get more attention, though as a kid I never processed it because kids have such innocence. My point is it may not be media or adults telling her but kids in school or the neighborhood. And therefore the mum needs to at least find out.

@ThePltsweet From personal experience, I can vouch for the correctness of your first sentence. The basic ideas about my looks on a personal level didn't come from the media. Nor didn't I look at a Barbie or any doll and think I was supposed to look like that. My ideas that I was wanting in looks came from the people around me and was reinforced by mainly classmates (usually the black ones who assumed it as some kind of privilege) through middle and high school. Once internalized, it is difficult to shake but I managed to do it after many years on my own. That's why I'm glad this little ray of sunshine got intervention early in her life. This will stay with her that Shabria the rapper (a ray of sunshine herself) stepped in. I wish more people would do the same. It really does take a community to rear a child.

Duece Momm Miss Jamaica is not biracial. She comes from Mixed Ancestry on her Father’s side, but so does Gabriel Union (whose mother is a light skinned French creole).

Beauty comes in all colors, shapes and sizes. This little girl is a cutie and i wish her much happiness in her life. Mothers and Fathers should tell their children everyday how beautiful and loved they are.

I was bullied at school for my nose so it's not just skin color because many hate their eyes or mouth and go get plastic surgery it's all aspects that we need to teach our children to love everything about themselves to truly accept the way that they look.
