Brilliant! I just ordered 1,000 maggots off E-bay for my compost. We had them last year and the compost was magically turned into pure dirt. Our garden was unbelievable this year, and nothing added except the results of the composting.

I find this very interesting and I can see it as a short-term solution to reduce the deforestation that happens to make room for soy which will later feed cows, for example. But, it is indeed like taking a painkiller for a broken leg - it takes away the pain but does not solve the issue. We need to focus on changing the way we eat so we don't need to find solutions to feed all these animals. I still applaud the effort as every move in the right direction is a good one!

If nothing else, insect meal can be used to feed fish which need even less feed than chickens do. Hopefully lab-grown and plant-based meat will dominate sooner than we think. Lab-grown fish seems to be further off, though.
@BossOfAllTrades
@BossOfAllTrades 2 жыл бұрын
@@meh23p plant based meat isn't a better solution either, We have to learn how to provide for ourselves, instead of clearing out huge swafts of land for commercial revenue the commercial incentive of farming makes people take more than is needed and is unsustainable. I think we should be looking at ways to farm within our own backyard and find ways to use the action of insects on plant waste to turn unsuable celluose into a food source And I don't like the concept of lab grown meat because it brings in a load of problems as you have to add in already usuable proteins lets say from soy when you could have ate the soy yourself its a middle man for no reason. All you have to do is change the perception of foods to Americans aka eating insects, but also eating plants and eating fish but not wasting anything, and promote the concept that not everything is trash, it is wasteful to dump our food waste in landfills why not turn it into a protein source for you or your fish
@wybuchowyukomendant
@wybuchowyukomendant 2 жыл бұрын
@@BossOfAllTrades yeah, plant-based meat isn't a solution at all. If we all go vegetarian today we would have to deforest practically everything to make room for all the new farmlands, since our agriculture is an absolute garbo. But imagine if every big farm would start aquaponics, have their own maggot farm as a fish food source, some sort of renewable energy source for the heating and all the automation work, and deals with local shops and houses so they can collect their food waste. For a fraction of the price, fraction of water and hardly any energy at all we could be making more food than we can eat, basically without any wastes because it would go back into the system if unused. You could obviously scale it down to single households, but that's not possible in the big city and small apartment.
@BossOfAllTrades
@BossOfAllTrades 2 жыл бұрын
@@wybuchowyukomendantThats a prefect example, and we have the same exact idea, But yea don't worry we will be the farmers of the future. I thought about it it makes sense to feed that food waste to grubs, instead of to cows and pigs, people love complaining about, We feed them to vermicuture and then to fish 🐟 Who doesn't love fish. This also gives them a natural and sustainable diet, many vegans warrant that it is sustainability as the problem so I always ask the question " if I grew you a 100% sustainabile fish would you eat it".
@BossOfAllTrades
@BossOfAllTrades 2 жыл бұрын
@@wybuchowyukomendant The automation part is amazing, If used in the right way we could grow all the oysters, shrimp and seafood the world ever wanted, as the USA lacks in this department. But companies could use that to create monopolies, and we would get back to the current unsustainability, we have today, we have to put the hands of food production into local communities and towns and not monopolies. Think about it automation sorting garbage, repromoting the recycling industry, bottles made from algae, this could spur on a new age for America. We would be exporting a whole lot and boost The economy through the roof, if the right programs and regulations were in place, Imagine if you past a limit of food supply and you would have to sell some off to prevent overproduction or you overproduce on purpose because your close to local drones, that deliver food to cities and you make bank. Future cities might need to be revamped to cause as it stands its really just office buildings, and penthouses not a good use for 100 ft skyscrapers...

@heidik.9005
@heidik.9005 5 жыл бұрын
Nicolas Vanlangendonck i wouldn't think so. Basically the temperature in a normal compost pile increases because of the decaying process. In this setup there is no decaying process as the larvae are eating everything and you are left with their waste. If you were to throw the larvae into a normal composting bin the heat may be an issue eventually, but if you aren't severely overfeeding them it should not be a problem here.

People are up in arms about deforestation in the Amazon - signing petitions, protesting in the streets, posting on FB+IG, etc. To really make a difference though, we need to adopt lower-resource-footprint protein, on a major scale. Beef and pork are the prime reasons South American forests are suffering from chainsaws and arson - whether for grazing, or for soy (that's either fed to the animals in South America, or exported to China, Europe, etc to feed livestock there.) While we're at it, we need to reconsider our notions of the term "disgusting." I wouldn't want to eat raw larvae, just as I wouldn't want to bite into a raw cow. It's called cooking/ preparation. Best of luck Entocycle.👊

He uses a sifter, but the great thing about BSFL is when they are ready to pupate, the large ones (black in color) will by their own nature crawl away from the compost or food source or whatever. Most people provide them with a ramp, they crawl up the ramp, and then fall down into a holding container of some kind. And then they are collected.

I was particularly interested in the wet larvae before they start turning to pupae. I am processing these for my chicken feed
