I built a machine that generates 400 digits of pi in celebration of 𝝅 day! When you turn the handwheel the machine will generate up to 400 digits of pi and display them on an array of seven segment LED displays.

As an engineer I spend most of my time problem solving and I think that's an extremely important skill. I have learned that complex problems that may seem impossible at first, can be solved by breaking them down into “byte sized” pieces. I hope that my viewers see my passion and enthusiasm for making things, and that it inspires them to make something that they're excited about.
If you’re new here you may not know that I make a lot of other cool project videos like this. If you enjoy these kind of project videos, please consider subscribing to byte sized. I really appreciate you taking the time to watch this video.

Awesome project! A trick from Ben Eater is to put some translucent red film over the 7-segments so the background is totally dark except the parts that are lit up. It makes it more readable!

Haha, that's clever, Zach. Now hook it up to a motion camera and have the number display out as you're pulling your car in. When it's full displayed, you know you've pulled all the way in. :D

Good job! All that work just to be used for a single day. Oh but this can also be used on Tau day, Euler's constant day, golden ratio day, etc

Nifty project. If you had gone into a bit more detail about how you used the shift registers to get the desired effect, and how you worked with the rotary encoder, I would have found that useful.

What's the voltage at the end of the string? Even at 1ma per segment and assuming only 75% of the segments are lit, that's 3 amps at the source end. With all those connectors, I'd imagine you should be seeing close to a 1V drop at the end, if not more.
