Guys, THIS SONG just so happened to be the theme song of the 1984 Summer Olympics held in Los Angeles that year; Richie performed it with a huge crew of dancers for the closing ceremonies. Sometimes it helps to be old(er) with a good memory.

That performance ran on, not for the planned 15 minutes, but over an hour! It started the tradition of having a party for the Olympic athletes at the last act of the closing ceremonies.

@jdw5678 2 жыл бұрын
I remember that closing ceremony performance, it started with a giant flying saucer hovering over over the L.A. Memorial Coliseum, as the space aliens made contact to find out what this Olympic "party" was all about. It ended with several hundred break dancers performing on the field to this song. A television spectacle seen by millions around the world, and helped make this a worldwide hit, one of the biggest of 1983-84.

I was going to mention that. I remember that performance like it was last week. Felt like it would go on All Night Long -- the best arty ever in sports. By the way, that Olympic performance was the first-ever public performance of this song-- he saved it for that night..

I second all the votes for "Dancing on the Ceiling", as well as his immortal duet with Diana Ross, "Endless Love". But this is just the beginning of your Lionel journey. "Say You, Say Me" is a classic, as is "Running With the Night". Fun fact - this video was produced by Michael Nesmith of the Monkees!

I was born in 1955 in Alabama, so I graduated high school in 1974. Loved the Commodores and Lionel Richie's music. But after hearing part of his story, I really admire him as a person. One of his band members (and his girlfriend) had a real problem with drugs. Lionel and his wife offered to take care of their daughter until they could get clean and back on their feet. From what I understand, that never happened and after a couple of years they legally adopted the little girl. I don't know if you have ever heard of her. Her name is Nicole Richie.

Growing up in the 80s, I am convinced it's THE best music, artists, movies and overall entertainment of any generation, and I actually stumbled across Jay's reactions while watching videos on KZfaq for the nostalgia of it. I found myself coming home after work, watching your reactions. Adding Amber took it a notch higher, because her emotional and genuine reactions add to what many of us who have loved this music for years is feeling...it's like sharing a genuine part of who we are with you guys. I still come home from work, sit down, and watch you guys experience a piece of myself, my heart, and who I am...it's truly a joy. Thank you Jay for also sharing yourself, your beautiful wife and kids with us. You named it correctly...cause after sharing so much of myself with you day in and day out, you guys truly are family. "Endless Love" - Lionel Richie and Diana Ross teamed up to produce what is easily in the top 5 of pop song duets of all time, if not the best ever. I highly recommend reacting to that song. In my estimation Richie is like Elvis and Billy Joel - A ton of hit songs, or even lesser known songs, you can review and get plenty of views. The number of quality songs Richie made/sang lead for from the 70s-80s is rivaled by very few singers. I have more personal favorites from ELO, John Denver, Marvin Gaye, The Beach Boys, Simon and Garfunkel, Sam Cooke, The Platters, and Dion and the Belmonts, but I can easily listen to almost any Lionel Richie song at any time with no gripes and it'll brighten my day. And, at the moment, I really can't think of another artist/group who offers as much of a sure thing.

Richard Marx "Right here Waiting" does the backing vocals on this song. Could you react to another Richard Marx song? "Satisfied" is a great song and his song "Hazard" is an amazing story telling song

Thanks for doing this song guys. As a drummer and music lover for over 40 years, 3 years, this is one of my favorite songs of all time! what a wonderful world beat song. How do you not fall in love with it from the 1st time you hear it? So much intementation. Percussion. Strings. Horns. Yet it is still uncluttered and breathes. Shout out to other viewers for mentioning other great Lionel songs.

This song was one of the songs that made the summer of 1984 so great. Lionel is the man! You have to react to "Say You, Say Me". It has very inspiring lyrics. Another one of my favourites by Lionel is Running With The Night".

This song to me represented everything the 80's was. The music, the colors , the dancing, the positive and upbeat sound. And I don't care what the media says, the races DID get along then and very well. You didn't have the tension you see today, in large part because of the music. It makes me tear up too. This is who we were in our prime. So much life and energy back then. The times, the atmosphere. So much is lost, so much gone. And your face Amber when the African dancers come out. Pure joy. It made us feel the same. Everybody's twirling and moving smoothly and then those guys just come out and just bounce and snap. Always loved that part.

I’ve seen so many different people, regardless of age, what kind of music they’re usually into, or anything like that, light up with a smile when this song is played because, as you say, it’s so human, and that’s what we all are. I’m glad to now see that smile on your faces, too. There are obviously still too many who need to figure out that we can all be different while recognizing the fact that we’re not really _that_ different.

I was born in '69, so was 12-13 when this song was out. Always loved it along with the video... it really captured the feeling of those times. Miss the 80s a lot these days... the old clubs that are now gone, and all the people shopping at the malls. Thought back then it would last forever!
