I had a convo similar to this with an aunt. She brought up genitalia and chromosomes, too. But that's an annoying defense of these types of callers since we have no access to genitals and chromosomes in normal life. We use other features and make a guess. Most of the time, it'll be correct.

It’s actually a reoccurring process in a lot of different species of animals when a dominant male isn’t present to lead a pack or territory, and so animals will change their sex. You can also hear about this in movie context in the first Jurassic Park where Dr. Grant sees the eggs having been laid wild in the park.

I'm not sure I understand how one can acknowledge there is a difference between sex and gender and then categorise everything as sex. What does he think gender is? I'm only half way through though, so lets see if he clarifies or learns something
