Well Grubby only won because he's better, so he had an unfair advantage. I'm sure if the other guy was better than Grubby, he could've potentially won.

For real, if you say you're better than a player but then start right off with asking them for advice instead of playing the game, you've already lost. It isn't a mentor game, Grubby isn't teaching you how to play or helping you get better, it's framed as a "I'm better than you" contest right from the start. Like wtf?

he has good games and bad games, so obviously out of shape. plus the latest patch changes are total whack so playing between the versions would throw anyone off. last, but not least - he is spending most of his time playing a different game. however, he is still one of the best. only a handful in top 50 have as many achievements as grubby, when it mattered. if he did nothing, but played warcraft 3 and these were the results then it would be a different story.

TBH, I think his ass reeming was so deep and heavy, he didn't learn much. From what I could tell of the brief views we had of his base and micro, along with the somewhat cringy and BM chat in the beginning, he's so new to this game he's got no frame of reference to even deconstruct his replay or take advice from Grubby. He seems to still be at: beat the campaign, then play 100 custom matches against A.I.

This takes me back to the actual time when Warcraft was a popular multiplayer game, I was a pub hero and tried to follow all the pro players, ofcourse i dreamt about joining a pro guild/clan. There wasn't any streaming or youtube or stuff back in those days, we just downloaded their replays from a replay website and watched them from the in-game engine. I was also an Orc main so I watched a lot of Grubby. There were these in-game tournaments where you could sign in and play other players. I remember the one time my first opponent was 4K|Grubby. I got my ass handed to me, but I actually managed to hold on longer than this guy did haha. Good old times, I saved and rewatched that replay alot!

I've been saying it for a long time, but even me and my friends were to play against any dota pro team drunk in a game where we got to pick our heroes and their heroes, we would still lose 100 games out of 100... And it wouldn't be even close. It is like a totally different game the pros play compared to us commoners... And this 3 minute game is a perfect example of this vast chasm between the two.

I used to play in a dota 1 team back in the day. We were decent at the national level but there was another team that would win against us at the finals of the big local tournaments. I had some mid-tier international wins but nowhere near the top level. Anyway, a team that was real good in their local cyber cafe I guess, no actual competitive experience, watched our replays and told us we sucked and they would kick our asses. We played two games. We picked meme heroes. We crushed them so hard, they accused us of hacking. We had godlike pos1 weaver with radiance and HoT at ~18 minutes in. I think we gave them two kills in the two games combined (one was zero kills). If we had played a top pro team, they would've done to us what we did to these guys. People really don't understand how vast the gulf is between skilled regulars and top professionals.

@IordanIovkov

@@BudgetMechanic I guess it's usually the Dunning-Kruger effect, or just people wanting to play with their favorite players even knowing they'll get crushed. Something else that I've noticed is that it's a lot easier to see mistakes and imperfections when you're just watching a game vs. when you're playing. This might make people spectating a game think that they would be able to play much better than they actually can. Anyone who has dissected their own replays should be aware of this.

I don’t see this happening in aoe2, likely because we are kind of gate keeper-y and hierarchical as a collective at times. The closest best was watching Viper beat dozens of players with his actual left hand to rest his right wrist. I tried to queue up when he was breezing through players at my rank, funnily a very small part of me thought I could beat a one handed Viper, but luckily saved myself the embarrassment. For context, I’ve played thousands of games, I’m fairly proficient at the game and play at a middling above average level. Viper can beat me easily with his weak hand while chatting with a giant audience on live stream, regardless of civs or map generation. That’s the skill gap between people who play for fun and those who play for a living.
